SMUT part 3 is postponed now the Felt is complete again. I *will* have it completed before the weekend is through though as I really want to make sure I have a backup commuter.

That and the idea of fitting the 105 set is intriguing.

    tease

i do hope that's not 105 5700 you're referring too, because if it is you'll no doubt be as gob smacked at the fiddly cable routing as i was, who came up with that a 5 year old?

    There is a minor problem

The FSA crank is black, the 105 is silver...

    The bike looks like:

    5509272808_30287d4f5a.jpg

CanI fit a silver triple to this? I think I might break a law or something.

The frame appears to be brown, so silver would probably be better than black with it. But TBH with the Eiffel Tower of headstem spacers there, your Rules check is already failed. :D

I fitted a silver 105 double to my kaff when I replaced the FSA BB and cranks, it looked a bit weird to begin with but as all the mechs and shifters are silver, you can get away with it.

I've got a R700 silver chainset with 105 black/silver front mech and Tiagra rear mech on my Kaff, it works for me.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

One question: the rear derailleur is a long drop (as per the photo above... that's NOT my bike btw, but the spacer tower is the same as on mine) is it okay to swap it for the 105 normal one?

    Full fettle DENIED!
Can't undo one of the allen bolts on the crank; builder looks to have used wayyyy more than the specified 12-14Nm torque and I'm now in danger of rounding the head. Pre-loading cap was almost as tight. Guess it's time for penetrating oil and then a possible drill-out. :(
Cleaned the drivetrain and popped a bling new KMC gold chain on so that the morning wasn't a complete bust.

Not if you're planning on running a triple.

All gone a bit Pete Tong anyway... the cassette is a 10 speed and I do not have the shifters spare. I don't want a worn cassette and chain matched with a far less worn crankset. I'll run the old set until it really falls apart and then get a replacement 9 speed and chain.

Crank sets last for ever anyway. Doesn't matter how worn the chain and cassette are.

Finally removed the accursed converter sleeve from the CAAD10 BB, assessed by a professional as being stuck there forever. Well, he didn't reckon on three country lads with nothing to do all day and an attitude of fix it or feck it. It's out. The shell is perfect. Not so much as a smudge to the paint.

Rigged a press to remove it: braced the NDS to a steel beam with a 45mm exhaust pipe. Screwed the end of an old cartridge BB into the DS. Tack-welded a cartridge BB tool to a bottle jack, and braced it to another steel beam. Then carefully pumped the jack a mil at a time. Slid out like a perfect type 4. Quick run of the circlip grooves with a dental pick, polish up with a Dremel Jeweller's tip and it's as good as new.

I thought clamping the bike by the top tube was a hanging offense?

No fandangled rear brake cable to worry about on that bike.. and no excessive force. No frames were hurt in the making of that photo... ok ok send me to the gallows

Neck, weather and time permitting it will get its first serious ride today. A few laps of the street here and it feels fabulous, like a monster truck rolling over everything! Should be a hoot on the trails.

I spy a Gaggia Classic, and a Rocky doserless. I have a Classic too, although just bought a Rancilio Silvia, steams like a steam train, much better mircro-foamed milk from it. Also just stripped and rebuilt a 2nd hand Rocky, first test run tomorrow!

Pick the wheels up monday. Genuinely looking forward to seeing what it'll be like. A CAAD with Ultegra just seems right, somehow.

Great spot, I do need to upgrade the classic to the sylvia wand!

    That Cinelli does look good.
I was having a day of sorting stuff out in the house, garden and garage when I was accosted by a neighbour to have a look at the wheel bearings on his other half's electric assisted hybrid. Good god it weighs a ton! Went to have a look at the back wheel and noticed the tyre looked a bit odd. Further investigation showed a brake block was out of place and had worn through bits of the tyre causing strange bulges. How it didn't go bang I have no idea. Fitted a new tyre he bought, adjusted the brakes and bearings for them. Got what looks like a nice bottle if plonk for my troubles.

Hmmmm - tried to bleed MTB front brake as part of replacement caliper fitting project. Failed miserably. Ordered syringes and tube from Ebay and tried reverse bleed. Seems to work first time with no sponginess. Am very suspicious. It shouldn't be this easy. I don't trust that bike - it's trying to lull me..........

Fitted a pipe cleaner to the rather grubby rear hub and tightened the chainring bolts on the Tricross which will hopefully cure the creak I get when pedalling. Already given the crank bolts 1/2 a turn so don't think they're the issue.

Still trying to sort out my rear indexing problem, losing the will to live now.

New RD, new 105 shifters, new cable. Chain has 800 miles on it, cassette has about 2K. 99.9% sure cable is connected correctly at RD end.

I can index gears. Sometimes it won't jump up a gear, other times it won't come down. I usually end up clicking up two and then having to come down one.

I haven't check the alignment of the rear hanger. I've never dropped or crashed the bike, really can't see that this is the issue but what's left to do???

    An update.

Bought a hanger alignment tool, hanger was straight. Gave up and took the bike into my LBS, the mechanic here is very good.

He tried to index it, couldn't. He checked the RD alignment, it was straight, he checked the cable it was OK.

All he could say was there is either an issue with the RD (relatively new) or the 105 shifter (relatively new).

It seems I have no option other than to buy a new RD and try it, and /or buy a new 10 speed shifter and try it.

    Damn bike.

Problem sorted. It was simple but I fitted a new groupset to find out! The new shifters I bought came with a new bottom bracket cable guide so I thought I may as well change it. I had cleaned it when trying to solve the problem but I hadn't removed it. The rear shifter cable had worn through the guide and was occasionally getting trapped between the frame and the guide.

    :?
  • completely took apart my rear brake and gave a thorough clean as there was around 3 years of grime on it, suprisingly my brake seems to work better now.
