Semi-seized seatpost removed, sanded the inside of the seat tube and the outside of the post.

There seems to be some debate on whether a carbon post in an aluminium frame should be greased.

As it stands I don't know if it was water or grease causing the post to swell and get stuck.

I'm going to take a more prudent approach and apply electrical or silicone tape over the clamp, hole in the back of the seat tube and bottom of the post to stop water ingress and not use grease. In a month or so I'll see if it's seized up or not.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

carbon paste ! it feels a bit like swarfega when you apply it, it's designed to stop carbon bonding

New transmission system at the weekend, new crankset, cassette, chain and jockey wheels.

I also trued up the wheels and gave the 'ole beauty a good bath!

The main purpose of carbon paste is to stop a carbon post in a carbon frame from sinking by adding friction.

So since Specialized say not to grease their posts I'll be testing it ungreased and waterproofed.

    Lots over past 8 weeks.

Re-rimmed Powertap hub with Velocity deep Vs and elliptical stainless steel spokes, thanks to ugo.santalucia, superb job.
Replaced all 4 bearings for same.
Replaced brake cables on Storck and Dolan.
Replaced gear cables and rear derailleur on Dolan.
Replaced all cable-casings on Dolan with new and, crucially, much shorter sections of casing all round, following Sheldon Brown’s cable-casing mantras: “no wrong-way bends; smooth single bends; straight entry to casing-end-lugs; casing sections as short as possible” (shifting much improved since).
New big chainring on Dolan, TA Specialités 52 as Campag compact 52s impossible to find.
Cleaned cassette in ultrasonic cleaner (magic). (KMC missing links on order to allow damage-free chain-splitting to do same with chain)
And, most importantly of all, fitted anodized red cable-crimps to all 4 cable-ends.

For almost a year I've been toying with the idea of making an ultrasonic cleaner and I've got no further than thinking about it. I should just buy one.

It's a very old and small jewellery cleaner, can't remember the make. Prob only 0.75l capacity, so that the whole cassette wouldn't quite fit in, I had to keep turning it. I filled it with hot water, washing-up liquid and some citrus degreaser.
I'll be getting a bigger one, as they're quite cheap, probably a 2.5l one.
Next time I do it I'll prob use white spirit rather than hot water & detergent.
There's tons of discussion on the merits or otherwise of using one to clean a chain, I've decided it's likely to be a very good way of getting the particles out of the innards of a chain, as long as I can conveniently remove/refit the chain at will.

  • Interesting. Very interesting, cheers.

I personally think the cleaner the chain the better, so long as you're able to re-lube properly, I can't see it being a bad thing.

I think if I were ultrasonically cleaning a chain, I'd also use ultrasound to re-lube to ensure the best lube possible. I'd be thinking about dunking the chain in a bath of oil/lube and ultrasounding that, then letting it drain.
I doubt it would be necessary, but it couldn't hurt, could it?

I didn't do it, had it done to me. My shoulder has been fettled by a doctor using a big needle and an even bigger scanner. They put the needle into the fluid of the joint then inject saline to expand the joint and steroids to increase my awesomeness.
Wow! That hurts. Not the worst thing I've had done in the name of medicine, but not something I care to repeat.
Shoulder already more flexible, if somewhat tender.
Physio starts in a few weeks, until then I have to keep it moving.

Owch hope it is less sore soon! Though I suspect the phyo's may make it more so at least in the short time.

They are cheaper than you think. I was going to buy one several years ago when I was racing, but never got round to it.

Should be an interesting commute tomorrow, I need to take a spare front wheel into London, first 15 miles then a train then 2.5 miles across London, I guess I wont be filter much London side, not that that's the biggest issue, how do I make the spare wheel ultra visible to the twatwaddle close passing speeding country drivers?

    Snap.

I'm taking a wheelset to Ugo so he can swap the rear hub for a powertap for me. Looking forward to a windy, wet commute with a wheel bag on my back.

Put proper pedals and mudguards on the Burls last night and moved the saddle forward 5mm and up 5mm.

I've opted for Monday in the car, gusting 35+ today and raining. No thanks, as it was I had one van brush my panniers which was nice, odd because its a dual carriageway all the way with practically nothing coming the other way perhaps he has a fear of crossing white lines?!

Having mentioned it I got off my arse and did 2 things: 1. actually ordered a 2.5l ultrasonic cleaner (Maplin £99.99, arrived today) and 2. actually looked up exactly how it works. I was surprised; the role of the detergent in the water is not to do normal “detergenty” dissolving things, but instead to eliminate surface tension in the fluid, which apparently acts as a "force-multiplier" for the process described below:
From a well-known public store of knowledge: “An ultrasound generating transducer built into the chamber … produces ultrasonic waves in the fluid … This creates compression waves in the liquid of the tank which ‘tear’ the liquid apart, leaving behind many millions of microscopic ‘voids’ or ‘partial vacuum bubbles’ (cavitation). These bubbles collapse with enormous energy; temperatures and pressures on the order of 5,000 K and 20,000 lbs per square inch are achieved; however, they are so small that they do no more than clean and remove surface dirt and contaminants.”

BB7s are fully bedded in now so I adjusted them to be nice and close to disc. Almost catapulted myself off the bike when using them in anger for the first time.

Also properly cleaned and lubed the chain after Wednesday's biblical ride home. The bike is completely dust and mud covered with this gleaming chain, looks weird but a good way.

Just got an old child's bike from my folks. Ripped off all the excessive plastic (with associated fairies and unicorns), realigned the handlebars, lowered the saddle and fixed the rear puncture. After a year on a balance bike my three year old immediately took to riding the blessed thing down the road. Videos taken of her with a massive smile and an ocassional chuckle. Pleased as punch!

Changed my seized front brake caliper but somehow managed to fit the brake blocks the wrong way around, which explains the continued lack of stopping power.
