The Paragon route looks good. I used to commute to Croydon through those lanes (by car  ) and if memory serves me correctly it couldn't be described as flat. The hills may not all be steep, but there's plenty of them.

Yay! I can make the 9th so I'm back in fo' sheezy.

Happy with all the routes suggested so far. I've been to The Harrow (pub that was mentioned earlier) a few times and it's ok, nothing brilliant but not bad either. It's run by the same company that own The Fox in Old Coulsdon and they've got the same menu. The prices are reasonable - IE not as cheap as a Wetherspoons but not as much as a gastropub.

I have done that Dulwich Paragon ride and its a good one. There are some pretty stiff climbs, so important that we all wait for each other (as I am sure we will do). I managed it with another rider who knew the way and I am not fit by a long stretch (apart from looks :) ). I was puffing up some of the climbs but its all very do-able.

Has anyone got a garmin edge?

    Yes, got an Edge 305.

Was already thinking along those lines - if someone creates the route and maps it I'll put it into the 305 so we don't get (too) lost.

No peeking at my heart rate though ;)

Where's the fun in that

I thought the whole point of a Sunday morning run was that no one really knows the whole route (it helps if 3/4 people only know part of the route, but only parts that aren't connected, with no idea of how to get between them  ), you get lost, do some extra miles, and have a tale to tell at the end of it :lol::lol:

Yes but it's no use to us if you're eight hours ahead of the peloton :)

Fair enough... So that's two (at least) of you that will have finished the ride by the time us lot have clipped in*, then.

OK I am getting worried now that I've inadvertantly suggested a route chock full of hills!

All you speedsters considering coming along will have to domestique us slow coaches

Other more leisurely riders, what is the concensus on hills? I am up for the challenge (err.. I think) but I don't think that beasting ourselves on climbs was necessarily the point of this ride?

I'm happy with some hills, you guys just have to promise you won't laugh.

    No, seriously... Promise.

The only climbs that could prove a challenge on the route that (bar any roads that I haven't tried in the Biggin Hill area) are Heisers Hill and possibly Corkscrew Hill. On Heisers you do get a bit of a run up to it and can easily coast along at 20 coming at it due to it almost being in a valley (the first time I actually spotted that road was from the road it joins at the top as I was headed past it, looked bloody amazing dipping into and out of the valley!)

Corkscrew Hill is another nice little one which isn't as bad as it looks or sounds, 1 short section that is steep but the rest is fairly easy, the only issue with that one is that it's on a slightly busier bit of road then Heisers being one of the first bits of "main" road you pick up after the quieter country bits.

I'm still a maybe as it looks like getting a whole morning to ride might not be possible, but I will keep working on "er in doors" ;-)

There's only one way to get better at them

I certainly won't mind acting as domestique, you'll just have to put a rope arround me as I have a habit of disapearing off into the sunset

I'm still a maybe, hills shouldn't be a issue though being no lightweight i tend not to be fast, I also have a pottering tendency.

You may find that heading out towards Windsor poses far less in the way of hills.

I know you are so right about hills and as I am currently rubbish at them now is the time to start! Am all motivated after being off ill this week watching Le Tour.
  • Nothing wrong with a few hills. It's not a race, just take them slowly in your granny ring if you are struggling. I am sure that everyone will support each other and be tolerant and wait for the slower riders. I think it was mentioned earlier in the thread that we will move at the pace of the slowest rider.

Someone pick a route with some hills and some flats please....

I'm going to say it. I'd prefer not to have too hilly a route for the first ride.

We don't yet know each others riding abilities, speeds and a too demanding course may put some off.

This is ride to get some of the slower people here (like myself) out on longer routes and putting distance and confidence into legs.

That said, I wish someone would choose a route and suggest leading it.

Like PP was doing, I am blanching somewhat at the talk of all the hills in this ride.

I am crap at hills, utterly crap, indescribably crap, racing snails over speed humps and losing crap. Now, I know Rich is right and practice is the only way to get better at hills, but...

I think I will be soooooooooo slow that it will irritate others, which will make me feel guilty and also, I'm not sure I want an audience to my embarrassment.

I might sit this one out.

Why don't we just do the Paragon route, none of the hills should be too bad iirc So long as we take it easy then everyone should be fine.

If you keep avoiding hills they never get easier. I used to hate them with a vengence, but after 12 months of gritting my teeth and getting on with it I love them and look on each one as a challenge.

I agree with doing the Parargon route, its not too hard. If you can do RP a number of times then you should be fine.

This was exaclty what I was worried about. All this big hill macho talk puts people off when encouragement is needed instead :) I am more than used to being the slowest one in my group of friends and I know how off putting it can be. Please don't sit it out whichever route we do - I am slow as well and we will all go at the slowest pace and enjoy a nice lunch which will be well earned. The thing is the hills are probably fine and just getting "talked up", especially if they are of about a couple of laps of RP standard. The fast ones can do hill repeat drills while waiting for us to reach the top!

Do we have any volunteers for route leading?
