Box Hill was EPIC, the ascent was gentle from the direction we came at it from and the descent was AMAZING, my only complaint being that it was over far too quickly.

@Bass - please tell me the climb took in the hairpins (all 2 of them)!

was down rather than up, on capital to coast

    That's a crying shame!

yup but then it was a charity ride than sportive.

Yeah but still, Box is not tough and is a joy. Ditchling is far harder and they stick that in the L2B...

well the main reason it's the wrong way in that you'd be heading back to capital, rather than coast.

Meh. No excuse! Odd descent to stick in a charity ride, could see people getting the turns wrong!

    Anyway...

I'd have happily turned around on the C2C and gone back up just to come down again :-D
Besides I'm still building up my confidence with descending on the roadie so the hairpins where taken at a very sedate pace and I then opened the taps again once it was a straight line

+1 I'm glad I got there early doors so I missed the carnage. Would have been helpful if they'd posted marshals down there (might have been a bit later) advising people to STFD!

I'm liking this thread and would be joining you if i wasn't so far away. If I find myself in the area over a weekend I'll be sure to look you guys up.

I may poach the idea and see if I can find similarly slow people 'ooop North' tho, if you don't mind. :D

Looking at the poll it's not looking good for me (can't do the 9th).

Is it maybe possible that some of the people choosing dates on the poll could actually do more than one date but because of the nature of the poll they're forced to choose just one?
  • I put my name down for next weekend, but am fairly flexible and could make the 9th (at this stage).

I thought the idea was that it would be a regular event to help improve fitness? That way if you can't make it once, come along to the next one. Once it has been done once I would be happy to organise it the next time.

Having done my cycle to Gatwick the other day, I have realised that 15 miles per hour is hugely optimistic. I managed that the other day for 2 hours but I was at the ragged edge and caning it. For folk who wish to go at a leisurely pace it may be wise to try 30-40 miles for the first run out aiming for 4ish hours or so.

We can sit here and talk about what number of miles per hour is appropriate but the truth is everyone will meet up and have a nice ride and I'm sure nobody's going to get 'dropped' because the whole point of this ride is that it's for slower folks.

If fast people come to this then they've clicked on the wrong thread.

There also is very little chance of people getting dropped until we get out of town anyway.
When I did the last (and so far only proper) group ride I did with people on here people rode at their own pace and we often found ourselves drawn out into 2 or 3 groups, but those ahead just waited at junctions and the top of hills for the other riders. No one seemed to worry!

I find it a lot easier to regulate my speed when I'm in a group as on solo rides I have no one to pace me and I think it's pacing that will be key to me being able to extend my rides so welcome the chance to ride at a more casual pace, I could then also concentrate on correct pedaling technique with my SPD's!

I think everyone's getting too hung up on pace, some simple rules on etiquette might not go amiss ie

On the flat we ride at the pace of the slowest rider
If you make it to the top of a hill first you wait for the group to reform
If the group gets split at a junction everyone waits on the other side
Any hazards are clearly pointed out by those at the head of the group

    etc, etc.

That way it should be enjoyable for all, and those who want to have a go at the hills can do without fear of leaving anyone behind.

thats what a half decent slow/social club run should do yes, it's normally quite easy to, assuming the numbers aren't too high.

    +1!

I'm not going in with the expectation to keep up...

The general premise is to primarily put miles into legs. And to get the slightly slower SCRers riding together to improve and get faster.

Hopefully the first one will be a hit and then we can roll out future dates for rides.

If it's the 9th August then I'll have to give it a miss, sorry. Got my sister and niece coming up to visit us that day. Apologies.

I honestly don't think I could handle that... It's gonna be about 10 miles there and back plus laps and I get the impression the RP crowd don't pootle. I think it'd finish me off.

I'm riding solo for Rp myself... unless I see someone else at the time as they go past me

commented to BassJ earlier my legs are shot

If it helps at all, I can do 2nd August also. However I'm doing the London tri on the 1st Aug so my legs might not be up to it!

Will ask some mates re: routes, although knowing them they will send me routes with killer hills

Bass, when I went down it on C2C not only were there no marshalls, there was a road race in full swing coming the other way up the hill!

Yes I have - it's a pretty nice route (assuming starting in RP, say), about 50 miles, mostly quiet and attractive streets, Windsor Great Park, and along the river. The downside is you can't really do a loop as the scenery is a lot less appealing (e.g. Staines, which is about as attractive as its name), but it's not really a problem. Last time I went, we stopped for lunch in Datchet, just outside Windsor. It was smashing.

I had a crack at a Windsor route but wasn't overly happy with it, there was a lot of nastiness to endure before reaching the good stuff!

How about sticking bikes on a train and heading a little further out of London, that way you can do the whole ride in the countryside and then cycle or train it home.

PS if you head to Surrey there's an absolutely wonderful pub in Downside The Cricketers It overlooks a massive common, does great food and is the perfect spot for lunch in the sun.
