    OK so where are we:

If you are interested please add your name to the list in the quote box below:
    Dondaddyd (Laurence)

Please state the date you'd like to do this ride to be on, please be aware that I plan to do more than one of these rides, I'd like it to develop into fortnightly thing... The first ride will likely be the date that most can do.

I can do: Sunday 26th July and 2nd and 9th August.

Please write down whether you have an idea for a route, I was thinking of meeting at DeVer, Wimbledon, Dulwich or elsewhere where we can ride out onto the route as oppose to catching a train - but catching a train is cool.

If you want to catch a train please specify

If you have a 30 - 50mile route please suggest it.

(Once we have some confirmations I will create another thread with all the details of this and possibly future rides)

  • I'm in. Can make the last w/end in July and/or first week of Aug - Sunday AM any other time will be tricky. No particular route preferences but I have taken a few jaunts into Kent in the past. Prefer to do it without the train option if possible but would not be against that in the future. Would be up for leading it one week but maybe not the first time.

For me it would be great if this was a weekly event and I could choose to come 2 or 3 times a month.

if your going from the wombleland then due south is the M23 so you need to be either side, i know the west side quite well the east less so.

i'd say don't worry about the distance too much, pace is much more of a issue, i've helped out on club runs with some very beginer riders and it's the speed (partically up hills) that hurts.

    edited for clarity.

I can only do the 2nd August as I've got stuff on the other two Sundays, sorry.

Could also do this coming weekend but I'm guessing that's too soon.

    I'm coming from Croydon.

I can do 26 July onwards - am very flexible at the moment.

I live in SE so don't want too long a trek to the starting point - Dulwich seems fair given the locations of people so far.

I may be tempted as anything other than fairly gentle pootling is out at the moment

I can't do the 26th July or the 16th August, but am prety flexible beyond that.

I'd love to do a couple, but can I suggest that we start with something really gentle so that we can work up to something big, rather than set a 50 mile target for the first one. If lots of us finish the first and aren't in too much pain, then we're more likely to want to up in pace and distance the next time out. I'm south Brixton, so I could easily get to most places suggested so far, and am happy to do a train out first.

[cheeky]Can we have somewhere without too many hills, so I can bring the SS?[/cheeky]

Amazingly (depsite being a lardass) I actually quite enjoy hills... Not at the time, obviously, but immediately afterwards... That sense of elation is quite addictive.

Maybe we could find a route with the option of a hill or two, so that some can go over the top and some could go round and meet on the other side, perhaps?

Or have a rest at the top so some can push up if needed?

you'll find that unless you take the train/car out that any route out will be 40/50 miles it's just the distances from southish london to the north downs.

you'll also find that avoiding hills if you head into the downs is not feasable, if you want flat best to head out to windsor way.

i'm free mostly in august though new job soon and it's not a 9-5 so...

I was thinking about this last night. How about if the trip is about 50 miles or so, but you take in a couple of towns with train stations in case someone is really struggling en route? Most of the stations around Kent seem to have relatively frequent trains back into town and if someone just wants to do 20 miles then call it quits, they can without making everyone finish the ride there and then.

What I'm going to do is leave this up until Friday, so that others have a chance to show their interest and then start a new thread listing the date and a location to meet up and hopefully give people a chance to propose a route..

:-D I feel quite honored to be in the "savage fast" grouping :-)

    Here's my input:

Family commitments permitting I'd love to come along, I should be able to fit in a few 3 or 4 hour rides *if* I'm nice to her in doors ;-)

As RM has commented the issue with route distance and finding "nice" roads to ride on - even if I started from my parents house (basically next to East Croydon station) I'd need to ride for about 5-10 miles to find some nice quiet country roads (like those on the ML) so starting further in town is only going to exacerbate this. Not that I'm suggesting we all meet at East Croydon but it might be an option as it's fairly well served by trains. On that note Cycling Plus did have a nice 50ish mile loop that started at/went past the station in a recent issue that took in some nice lanes and a hill or two, I think, around the south which might be something to aim for :-)

Most of the mooted meeting places are good for me in this order: Dever, Dulwich, Wimbledon. I'd certainly be interested in learning some new routes off to the west of the M23 or near the A24, especially the latter as we passed near there on the C2C and Box Hill was EPIC, the ascent was gentle from the direction we came at it from and the descent was AMAZING, my only complaint being that it was over far too quickly.

I'd be interested in a slower ride if welcome? Live in Clapham so DeVer/Dulwich/Wimbledon all convenient. As long as Cori is there so I won't be the only girl! Have a triathlon on 1 August so couldn't make then but relatively free otherwise ...

people will not have problems with the distance, as long as the pace is right. during the summer on hot days you get some very new folk coming to club runs etc. wait at top of hills and don't rocket off when they catch up and be fine.

If you have a route and/or don't mind leading a ride please post it/suggest it. It would be good for the route to include a train station part way, just incase...

(we'll be riding around the 15-17mph mark)

I've added a poll to determine the date.

Once we have a date and a route I'll just edit the original post to include the details.

I'm still torn between meeting in London and riding out or simply catching a train and getting there. Routes please.

    I'm 200 miles out

Why don't you pile on a train down to the Weald. Lovely riding country, no miserable city roads for miles before you get to the nice bits and loads of railway lines to chose from for the way back so you don't even need to make the route circular.

For my weekend rides, I lob the bike in the back of the car and head off to a decent starting point to avoid the same old local ground (and the vicious climb out of Wharfedale I'd always have waiting at the end of the ride if I didn't drive out.........

Are you going to richmond park on Saturday? I'll ride over with you if you want

I honestly don't think I could handle that... It's gonna be about 10 miles there and back plus laps and I get the impression the RP crowd don't pootle. I think it'd finish me off.

From my understanding of Saturday there is going to be a pootle group and I've heard it can be done, it's just that there are a few of us, myself including, who see any cyclist overtaking us like a red rag to a bull ;-) Myself and Ill Principle had a nice little tussle up Sawyers Hill towards the cafe last time after we got separated by a car. I had no doubt that he was going to re-take the lead but it was great fun!

CP - You going on Saturday as well? I'm not setting off until a bit later (need to check film timings) so might be able to ride over with ya?

Box Hill was EPIC, the ascent was gentle from the direction we came at it from and the descent was AMAZING, my only complaint being that it was over far too quickly.

@Bass - please tell me the climb took in the hairpins (all 2 of them)!
