Yea fair enough its his choice!

I just find it funny that he's spent more time building than riding... I could never do that, i'd get bored!

I just meant that spending it over time on something he doesn't do is silly! i'd at least be doing some fairly serious riding in the meantime!

Its like buying a car and modding it even though you don't drive and have had no lessons!
It's none of your concern surely? I'm sure he'll be spending a lot more time riding now that he actually has a bike to ride, and i'd rather have a nice bike i was happy to ride than one i wasn't. And as he said, he's had his wife's fury to ride... what's the problem? Yeah it's taken a while, but he's specced it out as exactly what he wants with no compromises. I've built bikes before with compromises and ended up having to completely rebuild them from the ground up, like the one i'm doing now. Granted i'll probably want another frame at some point anyway, but this will probably last DMC a good while.

i'm not going to start on you for taking ages to build this because next year i will be building a freeride bike which might take me longer than you  . and also i will be getting it pretty much the spec that i want and i will have my kinesis to ride so it's not going to be a problem, juts like you.

i hope you have a problem free build and that you will enjoy it once you have finished

    Thanks Jay :)

No matter what some people think, its a smart way to build a bike, especially if you have a backup, as you not only save up for the spec you want but you don't fall into the trap of buying on credit etc.... I have certainly enjoyed the process, researching, learning, waiting for nice shiny bike parts to drop through the letter box (occassionally have to open the door though  ) and of course I might've not met some nice folk on here either.

Riding is many things to many people, so as long as we all enjoy it, we should be happy for each other and respect each other to IMHO of course :D

You'll love specc'ing your new bike, any ideas on what spec you want at this stage? :D

I think we have a contender for "bike of the year" here - purely for the effort and time that's gone in to it :)

I'm more excited to see this finished than i have been for any of my own bulds

Sweet, quite a build list there matey, I wonder what the final spec will be though, I say that because I found a list that I'd done when I first started looking at building a bike the other day and it looked alot different than the finished artical

    Well there's 20 minutes I won't get back! :D

Seriously I hope it turns out how you want it to- it's a nice pile of bits that should build up nicely. I don't think any bike build has been more researched than this one- you've been very patient!

I guess, based on the parts you've collected, you're going for an burly XC kind of thing?

Yep, burly XC, trail centre type thingy

Don't worry the end result is nigh, got some surprises up me sleeve too!

fek me - how long has this thing taken to build!!!

I started buying my bits for my P7 build 5 weeks ago, I then went to indonesia for 3 weeks.

came home and picked all my bits up from Royal Mail - within 2hrs it was fully built up & I was riding.

Same kind of spec as the OP (full XTR, 2010 Talas RLC FIT etc etc) i just don't understand why someone would want to spend so long building!!

I have been blown away by the P7 though - My other bike is a Blur LTc and i don't seem to be much slower on the P7 - i don't think ill be taking the P7 to the Alps or Spain though

I've had a 2010 chameleon & a genesis alpitude as my HT's in the past 12 mts and can safely say the P7 is better than both.

Good luck with the build though! :D

As has been said before, because not everyone has the kind of dollar laying around to just go out and splurge £2k+ on a pushbike. Some people have other priorities.

I've known people who've saved for a couple of years before buying the bike they want. DMC has just bought bits for his as and when he's had the spare cash. and fair play to him for having the patience to do so.

    Wow, what a thread!

Just spent a good 30 mins at least reading through this bad boy, makes for interesting reading.......

One thing I do have to admire is your patience. How you manage to save, buy, sell, buy again then return and buy again really is something else I tell you!

But wow the standard of parts you have here really is amazing - will almost certainly worth the wait, all the sweeter when you do take it out....

It's a tempting route to go down again - I did a custom build on my mountain bike and really am not too happy with it any more - it's too lightweight/short travel/not strong enough.

So now I've posted I'll look forward to seeng this bad boy built up!

One thing though, I am genuinely curious as to why you're getting the LBS to build it?

Fair play mate, I for one are looking forward to the end result.
If it aint broke, dont fix it. Wait, there's 1 exception...unless it can be pimped up in anyway.

    'elo mate,

I replied to this thread the other night but just as I finished the reply my pc decided to play up and lose everything I had typed! Only now just got the time to reply again :D

I was hoping to update this thread next week but as peeps are asking about it now, I think I need to update.

I have now decided after a lot of thought to actually build the bike myself......shock, horror

I have already changed the rear Pro2 axle from qr to 10mm QR, fitted the cassette, rotors, tubes & tyres all by myself (first time ever) so pretty happy really :D

I currently have all the tools needed to complete the build, some kindly lent out by Mr Cat With No Tail (thanks dude) so I'm almost ready to go.

The frame is booked in at the LBS for Wednesday to prepare the BB, headtube, disc mounts & to fit the headset. The forks are off to Tftuned (also on Wednesday) to fit the spacer. So once I get them both back I will be ready to rumble. Can't wait :D

Ahh nice one, there's nothing more satisfying than building a bike yourself! It's a great learning process and it's fun too :) Can't wait to see the finished build!

Yeah, thats one of the things that helped me to decide, is that if I build the bike, then should anything happen when I'm away from home I'll be in a position to fix it (generally speaking)
