What a load of crap. If you're priority was actually riding then you would have realised a long time ago that all those shiny bits will make no real difference to the ride. You could have built up a P7 for half the price had it had SLX/XT kit and no fancy red bits.
Its been apparent for a long time that your main priority has been showing off what shiny bits your pocket money has allowed you to buy.0 -

No, he's actually hit the nail on the head there. This has been a lot of fun looking at nice pictures of shiny bits, but what a strange way to build a new bike!
I couldn't help thinking all along if you were really gagging to ride the thing you would have simply used the parts you could afford and it would have been finished yonks ago for half the price.
Don't get me wrong I think your bike will be lovely when finished, but you got to admit you've kept us in suspense for approx 8 months to see you actually start to build it, and then dropped the bombshell that you're paying someone else to do the fun part!0 -

Time of the month?
Congratulations, you've just won cnut of the day award!
Not everyone can afford to spunk £3k on a bike all at the same time. I fail to see what your problem is with someone wanting the best bits they can get, and saving up to buy them all.
Oh, and if you're saying that this bike will be no better than one that had been built up with cheap wheels, forks and drive, you're a bigger bellend than your post made you look, and thet's not an easy thing to achieve.
Now back under your bridge!0 -

Theres far too many smartarses lately that seem to be bordering on the argumentative side, I have a laugh now again but something tells me you weren't joking.
There's nowt wrong with getting the perfect bike, even at the expense of waiting a little longer, I for one have enjoyed this thread...... and it will be a corker when it's finished.
Y'all need to chill out and keep the negative comments to yourselves.0 -
I was being harsh earlier I apologise, I've thoroughly enjoyed this thread too and am itching to see the final pics of the finished article.
Bet you can't wait to see how she rides!0 -
i would like more pichers and photos of the bike bits please0

Cheers Cat With No tail, Ive never won that before!! Another one for the mantle peice.
Anyway just to clear this up, I have no problem with saving up for the best bits you can afford. In fact Ive a lot of respect for people who do this rather than stick it on the 'never never'.
While I also think the amount of time this thread has been dragging on is more than a little ridiculous, that is bye the bye. This section is called 'Your Mountain Bikes' after all, not 'Your Pile of Shiny Bits That May One Day Be Bolted Together to Become a Bike'.
The point I was making was, if having a nice bike to ride was the no1 priority, that goal could have been acheived already given the amount of money that has already been spent on this build. Yes the best performing parts are normally the most expensive. But parts that work at least 90% as well are often only 50% the price. I never said buy cheap, that is always a false economy. But there is a happy medium between cheap and XTR, Its called XT.0 -
What's the point of buying cheaper parts and then upgrading them to XTR or whatever, when you can wait a bit and save money by buying the XTR straight out?
I also think you misinterpreted his no.1 priority. His no.1 priority (I'm assuming!) is to get out and ride the thing, so instead of saving up all over again to buy the tools to put it all together and also risk fecking it up and ruining v.expensive bits (I'm assuming again he doesn't have much bike building experience as he doesn't have many tools) he's shipping it off to the bike shop to be built.
DMC, I think you should go and collect all the bits from the bike shop, and save up for tools and build it yourself just so all the moany gits who are complaining about how long it has taken have to wait even longer!Trek Remedy 7 2009

It'd be nice to get a pic of all bits together and a final round up of what's going on the bike. I don't know about anyone else but I've kinda forgotten lots of the bits that have been bought!
On the comments about the slow pace, his no.1 priority can still be to get out on the thing even if it has taken this long, cos the time was spent getting all the bits he wanted.
Would you ever build up a bike with bits on it you didn't want?Look 566 viewtopic.php?f=40044&t=12892775&p=18015091#p18015091

Yes, and I did just that.
In the mean time Ive had a good 2 years worth of riding out of it. Ive been slowly changing bits to get it to where I wanted it, but when I built it most of the budget went on the Rohloff, wheels and fork. Everything else was a compromise so that I could use it. By compromise I mean middle of the range, no CF, no Ti etc etc. Some upgrades were not strictly necessary, but 80% of the parts with life left have since been sold to help pay for the new parts.0 -
PS, my first proper MTB was a P7 and I know just how good they are. I have many fond memories of mine. Sadly I no longer have it as I cracked the down tube.
Regardless of what I think DMC, it'll be very very nice when built. Im not knocking the build in any way!0 -
Yes but there is a difference in that you can still put bits on that you want without those bits being top of the range.
I for example (and it sounds like you as well) am quite happy to have something a little lower in the price range, get it sooner and feel happy that I have gotten a good deal in terms of money vs performance.
DMC maybe doesn't want anything but the best for his bike, so would be disappointed with XT, fair play to him. But there you can see the two different mentalities when choosing your bits. We all have our preferences after all. I know my mate is a bike nutter, but sometimes he ends up spending way more time buying bits and faffing around than riding, but he enjoys it so thats what counts.
Can't wait to see the final thing. Better be bloody good now!Look 566 viewtopic.php?f=40044&t=12892775&p=18015091#p18015091

DMC - It's your bike. You build it however you want to, and ride it whenever you want to.
Also, nobody is forced to read this thread and anyone doing so, and finding the content not to their liking, can choose to give it the wide birth.
Just for the record, this is one of the first threads I look for on BR, not for the shiny parts - I can go to a MTB shop for that, but for the advice, chat and banter.
Looking forward to seeing the finished masterpiece.0 -

Hi guys,
I've had alot on recently and also been away so I've not updated for a little while, which looking at some of the comments is just as well, as I didn't want to lower myself down to that level in the heat of the moment!
However, a big thanks to Cat With No Tail, The Big Cheese, Dot1, HouseMunkey & Zaskar20 for your kind and mature comments, its well appreciated guys
What you guys listed above have said was spot on, my no.1 priority is to get out and ride on the bike with the spec that I have choosen, otherwise if all I wanted was to 'just' ride, I could have bought a cheap MTB and been riding all this time, but its about me getting the bike that I want, then I'll ride it, and as I've mentioned before in this thread, I'm not using loans, credit cards or the like, its all hard cold cash purchases, hence the extra time taken to finish this project, and believe it or not, most people don't have 3K to just drop in a heartbeat, shocker eh!
And for HouseMunkey & anyone else who wants to see it all, I will try to get a pic of all the parts together before I get it built up
Anyways, I am having it built by the LBS for a few reasons, which I don't really need to justify, if anyone really cares enough to know then please PM and I'll gladly furnish them with the info.
Thanks for your time gents & I hope you've all had a good dayOrange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

A new arrival
I also forgot to say in my post above that my RS Rev Teams arrived the other day but guess what, damaged! I'm not doing too well with forks am I? The shop I bought them from doesn't have anymore until the end of the month so I'll have to wait a few weeks longer, hey ho.Orange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos

I know I cant believe it! One of the stanchions had a scratch into the metal, also one side of the lowers had a dent in them and to top it off they sent me a shop display pair, you could tell as the box was for a completely different fork, the stickers on the fork were all dirty etc.... so they picked them up, was originally told that they were getting some more on Tuesday coming but now its the end of the month, and yeah it was the Bike Outlet in York. One of the guys there has said that he'll throw in some freebies for all the hassle, so we'll wait and see!
The only upgrade is the XX Revs but they are about £140 more, not sure they'd stretch to that, be nice thoughOrange 2010 P7 - Custom Build - My New Bikey Poos
