Thanks for keeping it warm for me :lol:

How are those knees of yours, Sunshine? :P

Suffering from the extra weight, no doubt................ better do some swimming or something to get back into shape.

That's both of your names down in the "book"
Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.

Nice one! I'd be interested to see how you find the Planet X once you've done a few miles on it.

Shouldnt have spoke earlier about the weather beoing kind

It was much better than last thursday, not least because I bought some Madison clear specs to go home in. Bit weird when the snow is sticking to them and then they start steaming up on the steep hills, think I'd better to keep the lanyard on them (which I tossed aside having bought them) so I can whip them on and off when necessary (none of this poncy tdf style inserting them in vents in my helmet)

I've got one and for the price they are excellent. Not quite as stiff or light as the Scott but under half the price :D

Do what I did and get some bint to knock you off your current geared bike and have it replaced at her cost.

Bad crash which I was lucky to be able to walk away from, and I have come out trumps at the other end. Still nervous of right turning cars. Dozy drivers...

Now, this is what I was going to point out, because Benno is about twice the size of JG :) . And others have commented on how it flexes under a larger rider. (G66 bumped into a chap on Embankment last year, too, who said the same iirc.)

Benno - at that price point, I think you might be better off with a Cannondale CAAD9. It's alu, but reportedly super stiff. This can make it a harsher ride, but is there anywhere in Cardiff which sell them and could offer a test ride?

Hey CJ, I'm only 13st 4 now

Tredz have the CAAD9, I was also lusting at the CR1 with SRAM Rival, but I'd prefer Shimano 105 or Ultegra. Just waiting for them to get the test bikes in, I've already asked them to make sure they get my size.

What do you reckon on Ribble's offerings? Starting price around £1000 but with a wheel upgrade and Ultegra - £1500 ish.

I'm really after a smoother ride which is why I'm thinking carbon, the Defy2 is comfy enough on smooth surfaces but I'm getting problems with my left elbow which I think is down to juddering along poor road surfaces.

With my power output I couldn't flex a drinking straw so maybe the Planet X would be ok for me :D

To be honest I can't see me getting a new bike this year, but I can keep hoping!

@Barry - I think my time will come soon, had 3 near misses on Sunday, one failing to give way at a roundabout, one turning right across me and one complete idiot passed me twice very nearly losing his wing mirror he was so close on both occasions!

Have't really looked at them. Being a fundamentally boring person, the colour scheme's not my thing.

You should look at your position, too, though. I used to get shoulder and elbow pains on my old Tifosi when the top tube was a little small and the stem too short and angled downwards. A longer stem, with it raised slightly did the job.

The CR1 is the business. This new CR1 is different to the older (my) range, but you're welcome to have a spin the next time I'm down. It's a 56cm.

Cheers CJ - would your wheels take a lump like me? Could try it up the Marina Hill and see if it instantly turns me into Contador. I can picture you now in a state of panic as I'm careering back down, was it 38mph last time?

@Salsajake - yes the Ribble's seem great value and have good reviews from what I've seen, the only concern I have is not being able to try one out first - definitely an option though.

I had been overweight for my height (6ft) for 10 years or so with 16 stone being my heaviest. Maybe I no longer qualify for "great lump" status - still got a bit of a beer gut though :)

  • I was on for the ribble sportive but opted for the planetx due to better customer service, a good sale from Ian and the fact that the ribble is apparently quite relaxed and very sat up. There were too many niggles from too many people reading about them while loads of people loved them so I just plumped for the Superlight

    Its cheaper too :P

Well, nothing to rave about with the present wheels - an Open Sport front, Open Pro rear, but, yeah, I think you'll notice a bit of a difference up Marina Hill  . Just, um, don't go down it at 38mph!

Apparently the clicking I've been feeling through the pedals for the last 100 miles that's been getting steadily worse culminating in having to twiddle home today in low gear to stop the chain slipping was caused by one of my chain links being held together by just one side plate.

    Ho hum.

Would you guys like to make a ruling?
I'd allow these miles. They were undertaken in good faith, involved being out on or with the bike and were self-powered. It would be nit picking to disallow them, and no-one's gonna win the Stats League walking their way to 10,000 miles are they?
Unexpected walking miles are allowed then, unless you deliberately set out to claim miles by going for walks that coincidentally involve pushing your steed along with you, viz a romantic Valentine's Day walk with the better half and a CAAD 9 in tow. That sort of thing is a step too far. :)
Walking miles should only be allowed if cycling specific footwear is worn... we could start a new sport of cleated sprinting :)

  • The bike wins again.
About 9 miles of tail backed traffic, bumper to bumper, for no reason I could see along the way.
No accidents, no broken down vehicles, no floods. Just a bit of slush on the roads.
I dunno, but anyway, I was only 5 minutes slower on my way in despite having to fliter half the journey!

I had a bad day yesterday - I think the incessent rain finally got to me. Feeling better now. I've upped the vitamin intake. Legs are feeling OK today. Think I might not need a rest after all.

I had to go into Birmingham New St station yesterday, at 9AM as all the commuters were emerging. God they looked miserable. Couldn't help wondering how many of their lives would be enhanced if they ditched the season ticket and bought a tax free bike!

But think about all those novice cyclists suddenly appearing on the roads.

I recently spoke to a woman who cycled in from South London for years - but for economic reasons. Once she could afford a car she never cycled again. She ripped into me after said something like the quotes above about how much better people would feel if they cycled instead of bussing tubing or driving. she said she reckoned it was dangerous, uncomfortable and unhealthy and was quite aggresive about it too. She wouldn;t accept my point of view for a second.

So cycling's not for everybody. thank god! :D

especially if you normally cycle. I really get wound up now when I have to drive in rush hour. Part of my brain is thinking 'filter through' and the other part is saying "you can't, you have to sit with everyone else". grrrrr
