Silly Commuter Stats

Thanks guys - got an Android phone (nerd) with gps, I'll have a look to see what software/bike mount kits are available.0

Oh, wait, just read the last sentence. Sorry, google maps just will not do. You must go and buy a comp. In fact if you don't go uber-bling you won't be able to play. Ok?
Garmin Edge 705 or it never happened! :P0 -
Canny Jock wrote:Just got round to updating this - my first day on the bike this year was 11th Jan after the snow, only to have a leg operation on the 12th which wiped me out for the rest of the month!
Feb has been better, with a few bits of travelling/couple of nights out messing things up a bit, but I have now reached the heady heights of 82nd! (although, my Feb and Jan figures add up to 175 not 189?)
Quick question - I don't have a bike computer, I've traced my route on google maps and add this each day I commute - is that acceptable or do I have to go off and buy a computer to join in? Sounds like a reasonable excuse to invest in some new kit
I just put a cheap computer on the commute bike, I can't even see the display when riding!
but it seems close enough.0 -

I've also got an android and, personally, wouldn't dream of mounting it on the bike. Way too flimsy and I'm sure the weather-proofing isn't all that. Nice as a phone but...
705, 705, 705, 500, 705...0 -
I use a lowly Garmin Edge 205, but its absolutely fine, and actually easier to read than these live map display ones. Much easier just following a black line (albeit not as useful if you are propely lost, but then you shouldn't be!)0

Okay you can all relax I only did 1 mile just to check out the CX for tomorrow, then remembered I've left my SS at work so need to take the car tomorrow, what a shame (pours another MASSHOOF) glass of red wine
Still snowing here anyway :roll:Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.0 -
oh no, just started snowing again. I don't want to do another repeat of last Thursday's epic, chronicled above, but its much finer and drier looking so I might give it a go. Just off to get some Madison clear specs though to hopefully prevent the eye freeze problem recurring!0

You don't need to look at at when you're riding... I use a Nokia with the sportstracker application on it and keep it in my pocket.
Beats carrying two devices (unless the Garmin has 'phone features...?).
I have a cheap halfrauds comp on the winter hack at the moment (found it on the floor of the shed whilst tidying at the weekend!) but the display is pretty much illegible. Don't think it appreciated being frozen for long periods. Maybe a new battery would help.
At any rate- it's set up to display Cadence, not speed/distance.... which was going to be my point. That's something the smartphones don't do so well, yet!!
Cost well under a tenner, IIRC...
Cheers,

Buns & myself had a fairly extensive conv. here on the forum RE using a ldil or similar cheap comp to calculate cadence, not that difficult to do.Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.

Indeed, though IIRC it freaked out some of the less technical contributors to the forum, who seemed alarmed that doing so might involve maths...(!)
If you want a cadence display there were several options discussed, solving the "problem" by using maths, engineering or simply money... :-)

Or even the ability to simply count pedal strokes for a minute
As for the cheap computer approach, presumably you mount the magnet on the crank, the sensor on the chain stay and calculate a theoretical wheel diameter where the speed you are running equates to cadence. I suppose it depends on the range of diameters you can put for your wheel into the computer.Faster than a tent.......0 -
Back in the saddle today for the first time in a couple of weeks this morning. That was a big effort, but joy oh joy it's broad daylight all the way now.0

OK - tested 2 pieces of software on the phone, sportstracker and endomondo. Both have done an excellent job of tracking the route, surprisingly both while the phone was in my jacket pocket. I didn't think it would work but both tracks are perfect. Hardly used any battery over the 30 minute commute.
Sportstracker looks like it has more detail. the full version costs £6. Going to try google my tracks on the way home.
The downside - my route is not 7 miles as I have been putting in the stats, but 6.6 home and 6.8 to work - so I think once I've tidied up I'll be dropping a few places! Need to sort a longer route home I think.0 -

Yup, that's about it. If you ride fixed (or SS, I guess) you don't even need to move the sensor, as you can factor the gear ratio into the calculation.

Or, if you don't run SS, given that Lidl computers are so cheap, you could have one for each gear ratio - handlebars might get a bit cluttered thoughFaster than a tent.......0 -
For the first time yesterday I noticed that I was rather knackered out. My leg muscles are beginning to give up - I can feel it. Actually I'm surprised that my muscles reached their limit before my knee did.
I might need a day or two off the cycling soon.0 -

But you had a day or two off last week when your bike was broken. You can;t be knackered already!0 -

I think at my age I might need a day or two off every week. Disappointing but I feel that it may be an inevitable reality of life.0 -

Oh, and, as it turns out, all but one of my Jan commutes are underestimates. I just can't be bothered to go and fix the totals.
I may ride, but at a pootle, on Friday0 -
