Epic failure tonight. I rode home the long way. I knew ITBoffin was just over 29 miles ahead of me and I could pass him, but the legs were drained. So when I got to the town nearest home I stuck to the main roads and did just over 27 miles instead of the desired 34

just over 1 mile short of the Big prize

I might go out for a cycle in my pyjamas after a quick doze here

I think you need a week off B_K99, at least a week off - you're legs'll feel much better after a rest

I was hoping to keep you two both in range this week - not been a good one for commuting, but I've got big plans for the weekend!

How do you rate the Pompino B_K99? I've been eyeing up that frame for a little while myself. Currently riding a cheap hybrid to work

Don't worry too much about me nic_77 - I'm in a fairly dodgy position at the moment with FixedWeasel on a roll who will pass me within a day or two, and Sewinman who looks due for one of his 70 miler's.

I can't see me getting passed 150 for this week, I was hoping for better.

A few days off and it's grown to 128 pages... Madness I tell you, madness. On hols the other night I dreamt that I'd got myself a big yellow & black motorbike, with a view to clawing some miles back in the stats. Not a good night's sleep.
    I stick to my logic

Rollers don't count as you are going nowhere, you are indoors, there is no air resistance and I don't have a set

Walking with the bike is well within the spirit of SCS

    CIB/ITB

Would you guys like to make a ruling?
I'd allow these miles. They were undertaken in good faith, involved being out on or with the bike and were self-powered. It would be nit picking to disallow them, and no-one's gonna win the Stats League walking their way to 10,000 miles are they?
Unexpected walking miles are allowed then, unless you deliberately set out to claim miles by going for walks that coincidentally involve pushing your steed along with you, viz a romantic Valentine's Day walk with the better half and a CAAD 9 in tow. That sort of thing is a step too far. :)

    Its fantastic

You get home in a world of pain, with legs shaking after riding home through roads covered in cow dung and several mm of pure mud on top... you dump it in the garage and you can be sure it will be good to go the next day despite feeling very unloved

Once a fortnight or 2 i will give it a wash and polish up that lovely green paint with some GT85

I think its got me doing more miles than when i was geared as its more relaxing and stops me chasing the bigger gear all the time.

But I got knocked off in november and the trek was written off which is the only reason why I am SSing it all the time. Considering a Planet x carbon to get me a geared road bike for the spring... So i can try and hold on to my 20-odd position with a few one ton weekend rides!
  • low miles yesterday due to burst tyre wall. nothing today due to wipping out 500 yards from home. minimal damage, unlike the 8 crashes I passed on the motorway.

Bike repair - that will be 3 inches of ducts tape please.

Car repair - that will be 200 quid excess please.

Peter you'd really duct tape a blown tyre wall?? isn't it better just to bin it?

Right then, look out. I got back on my bike today (first time since end of December) so have crashed in at a staggering #101 in the SC stats. Watch my ascent begin - reckon I could be 99th tomorrow!

Depends upon exact route, but my ascent is around 1700' per day. Starting with about 500' straight out the front door.

You should be joining our 1000ft minimum climb commute mini league - at least then, you can be no worse than 5th

I have added myself. It's a pretty pathetic 5th it has to be said. I could be 3rd in the westcountry combine harvester league, but that's even more embarrassing (over 900 mile gap to Porgy, the current loser in that league  )

Some of the mini leagues are a bit hardcore - eg Morpeth regulars. I've been twice so I count myself as a Morpeth irregular but most of them seem to be nutters if you look at the average mileage; I'd hate to lower their average!

  • Well I decided to ride back in the snow last night. About 4 miles in, above about 170m (noted on the GPS) it was really sticking, but it was wet stuff and I was soon soaked to the skin. The 25 sections tyres were cutting through fine and grip was not an issue, but not having glasses and getting hit by windswept flakes that started icing my eyes over was a big problem This then became an even bigger problem as it was impossible to stop when going downhill. Because I was riding in slushy snow that was deep enough to contact the rims, and the rims are brand new, no matter how hard I squeezed the brakes, the rims were being constantly lubricated/iced and all I could do was hold my speed, sometimes this was about 12-15mph though, which with traffic behind, a 6% gradient and not being able to keep my eyes open for anything longer than a fraction of a second at a time was pretty terrifying! the flakes passing my headlights was creating quite a nauseos effect too. I then had the option of my usual route, climbing to nearly 260m, but I figured that would be impassible and there was no way I would ride down from there, as it is 8-10% in parts, also it was now freezing and I figured if I slipped up there, I could be there all night with no one going past, which could be very bad indeed. So I had to plump to ride alongside an unrestricted dual carriageway. Fortunately I found there was a path seperated by a verge from the road, but I was still hit occasionally by a tidal wave of slush from bigger vehicles thundering past. Max speed was about 12mph along the flat, through an inch of virgin snow but it was nicer than going downhill. At one point I ducked to avoid an overhanging snow laden branch, but my helmet clipped it and it swung into my head, forcing a snowball sized chuink of snow right into my right ear - nice! This then continued, with me occasionally having to stop and squeeze my eyes shut to warm them up, until about 15 mins from home when my hands could no longer squeeze the brakes, I couldn't feel my toes and I had pins and needles in my lower legs, presumably no circulation to my feet at this point. I was also stuck in a single speed because ice had compressed all over the cassette so when I tried to shift sprockets the chain just slid about like a crazy thing. On arriving home (1 1/2 hours after setting off) and stepping off the bike my arms started flapping about uncontrollably and I couldn't grip my sodden clothing to remove it. My wife fortunately leapt to the task and made me a cup of coffee. My arms and legs were icy to the touch and bright red in great blotches , I was shaking like a leaf and felt sick. Dried myself off and jumped under the duvet to begin my recuperation.

But to cut a long story short for the purposes of this thread - I DID ANOTHER 19 MILES AND MOVED UP 4 PLACES.

I think that is the most nuts ride I have ever done.

Sounds character building to say the least!
I don't mind riding in the snow, but riding in the snow with traffic around you is not great as you do need more room to manouvre!

Had 15 mile an hour headwind driving slushy snow into my face this morning. Nice

Now, I've been hearing about this "snow" stuff on the radio. What's all this about? We've got sun, rain, sun, really drizzly miserable rain, sun. It's now bone dry outside.
