    "Sue Swetman, 61"
"These days we struggle to reach 10,000 miles in a year, but we don’t do it to reach a target mileage.”

But Mrs Swetman was still able to cycle 10,669 miles in 2009."

that's less than 40 miles a day - is that so much of an achievement? She's only 17 years older than me - and she's got all day to ride!

I've met a few old duffers who cycle round Kent who do impress me and who leave me standing to be honest - but I suspect they're not so anal as to write all their mileage down and keep a record for the whole of their life!!!

I think we're safe at the moment - unless she gets a job to commute to I think we could keep her out on a technicality :D

Should we have mini leagues for age groups, 20's, 30's etc?

yeah it's an achievement - but I seriously doubt she's anywhere near the most cycled person in Britain - she's just kept the best records for the longest.

It's a Ridgeback Velocity - pretty reliable on the whole but suffering enormously due to the wet and the grit.

I'm hoping to buy a second bike within the next twelve months - depends on various other factors though - like having enough money.

When the days get a bit longer I will be cycling home via Erith - that should give me the extra climb I need.

But will it average out over the year as over 1000ft? We'll have no part-timers in our exclusive group

My weekend rides might already push me over a 1000 feet on average. There are a lot of hills in Kent.

I'm happy with the Giant Defy for everyday use but a fancy a carbon for my Sunday best "not an expensive one, about £1500 should do, Ribble even do buy now pay in 12 months interest free...Think of the petrol and gym membership I'm saving, you thought I'd give up in a month and I've stuck at it, you've just spent £800 on the car..."

Yes - I've been rehearsing for another attempt sometime soon, may wait for my boys to come home for a bit of moral support, it's 2 against 1 at the moment with my 17 year old daughter and Mrs Benno who just won't listen to my reasoning.

relegating your existing bike is the preferred option of course

don't go on the attack unless she's giving a counter attack, then come with.... well the way I saw it was ...*insert damning facts and stats* so it's a way to save money long term while making me and therefore you happy

Do what I did, work out how much car/public transport would cost in the alternative, per day. Establish that she would not hold that against you for spending that much money on Shell/BP/Virgin/National Express/whatever. Say that therefore when you ride in of your own volition and at your own effort, you should have that sum for the day to do what you want with. Eventually you will have enough for a new bike. Mine's £6.27 a day and in 3 years that has paid for a new bike, lots of upgrades, clothing, probably over £2k worth of gear now. (though the bike fund is currently 'overdrawn' due to purchase of new wheelset- ahem)
