  • Phew - snuck through 500 for the month to date.

Can't see me adding to that tonight : so cold this morning that I'm just about warming up, fingers only just coming back to life, and even the prospect of a tailwind is not going to get me into soaking wet cold kit

Another day off... and looks like it's gonna be another lazy one, although i'll probably be able to drag myself to the gym later.

    Well done CJ!

For me, this week has not gone to plan at all, I was aiming for at least 13 miles in and 16 miles home every day but I've failed miserably.

I nearly bottled it completely today due to snow, the first half mile was treacherous. 200 yards from the house going downhill a car approaching from ahead starts to turn left down Llandough Hill and lost it completely hitting a barrier and doing a 180. After checking he was ok I carried on.

So, a mere 3.8 miles in today - crap! Can't see me doing the 16 miles home either.

But you get your bike fixed at a bike shop?

My extended commute tonight is very dependent on the weather... if it's peeing it down I'll take a well earned rest

In other news how do I go about finding total distance climbed?

Go into the settings and select "display elevation" before mapping out your route.

I do some work myself - I use the LBS as a result of lack of spare time, cackhandedness - I have a knack of breaking almost anything mechanical - and lack of space - I'm renting a room at the moment and have nowhere I can actually work on the bike, especially through the winter.

anyway - the amount i spend in the bike shop in a year is pretty small - amounts to maybe a £100 a year if you take out the cost of parts, & consumables.

In a few years - when my debts are paid off and I'm able to access some of the equity in my house I'll probably buy a nice flat and fill it with bikes. :D

Why don't you all take a well earned rest? In just a few days I'll be back then anyone NOT doing 250 a wk need not apply.

    That is all :evil

OK - now that the below freezing temperatures have left us - I hope - I'll be bringing in my new exteneded 20 miles commute. It'll give a minimum of 200 miles a week and over a 1000feet climb. Then all I'll need to do is mix in a 50 mile ride on the Sunday and I should be OK for Top 5 for forseeable future. Unless my bike breaks.

Does anyone else do a 2500' plus commuting day? New route is 2710' all told. I'm not sure if I will be able to do it 3 or 4 times a week, but I'll give it a go as most of it is just so nice.

Right then, look out. I got back on my bike today (first time since end of December) so have crashed in at a staggering #101 in the SC stats. Watch my ascent begin - reckon I could be 99th tomorrow!

Depends upon exact route, but my ascent is around 1700' per day. Starting with about 500' straight out the front door.

The bicycle will always get through.
Even if you have to carry it.

good point, although ideally I'd then like to be able to get back on at some point thereafter as it is still 9 miles home from the summit! Will have to see how it looks when I get there...

Yes, but crucially the miles don't count - this isn't silly cyclocross commuting

Well I've counted my 'Walking with bike to ice free roads' mileage from January.

My logic being that it's you and the bike travelling under your own effort.

If you were to take part in an CX event I think you would count the total miles, even those carrying the bike.

I was however informed that the miles with the bike in the boot during the drive section of my 'park and ride' commute did not count. Harsh, but probably fair

Ooooh! I'm glad you're behind me or I'd be crying foul  Cycling is cycling and walking is walking. I reckon riding rollers is more riding than walking a bike is riding is and we all know that you just don't count rollers!

Mind you, I like the idea of boot miles - I've got quite a few of those.

    I stick to my logic

Rollers don't count as you are going nowhere, you are indoors, there is no air resistance and I don't have a set

Walking with the bike is well within the spirit of SCS

    CIB/ITB

Would you guys like to make a ruling?

  • Epic failure tonight. I rode home the long way. I knew ITBoffin was just over 29 miles ahead of me and I could pass him, but the legs were drained. So when I got to the town nearest home I stuck to the main roads and did just over 27 miles instead of the desired 34

just over 1 mile short of the Big prize

I might go out for a cycle in my pyjamas after a quick doze here
