Ok - feet it is. I opted for metres as I assumed that's what these devices give their measurements in. Not for me to worry about tbh.

I'll hold fire on the tables positions for now to see what others think.

Where did you work your cimb out and I'd like to second use of feet not metres, just for consistency and becasue I'm an old git who still uses imperial. 8)

I have just been calculating my mileages using Bikely and the like. Not exactly accurate but likely an underestimate though Toaster gives much lower values. In theory, they should all underestimate true height gained so the highest should be most accurate. In theory!

Mind you, I'm mulling over more commute route variations so that might complicate future calcs.

it'll be a simple calculation to convert though - you could add the formula to the stats page - not that i'm trying to make extra work for you.

Mind you - more time on the computer = less time on the road catching me up - looks like i finally made the top ten. 8)

After some thought I agree with the Division changes - if it motivates people to regularly update then all the better - nothing more frustrating than to cycle your way up a place or two thinking you're making slow progress only for others to post up a whole month's worth of mileage in one go, knocking you back below where you were before.

Mind you - that will probably still happen though won't it? :(

ITB, the point of the divisions is that the non-updated stats are by definiton inaccurate, and the very out of date ones just distort the reality all the more.

When Div 2 riders posts a months worth of mileage will they jump into Div 1?

Doesn't really fix the problem IMHO just makes the site a bit untidy.

Though I do appreciate is that CIB is doing this in his own time etc etc

Hey RTA - are you planning on taking a holiday soon?

At this rate I'll be in the top ten sometime around June 2010 :P

Work is getting in the way with meetings off site, so you'll be gaining on me gradually

But I did test out another 20 miler on the way home that takes in Windsor Great Park and Ascot race course, so if the weather continues as it is I may keep using it :P

Just to be clear, for others too who've questioned it, the split is purely on last update - if it's more than 3 weeks since your last update you drop out of the main listing. Updating your mileage brings your last update up to date so you're instantly reincarnated in the elite bunch.

The idea is to encourage those who signed up to keep adding to it. FWIW I reckon that someone who popped in once to stick up a couple of thousand miles back in June doesn't have as much right to be in the top ten as someone who's regularly adding say, 21 miles, if he's not adding to that original mileage.

The full list is still shown for completeness but as it's at the bottom of the page you have to go and find it. Human nature being what it is it's reasonable to assume that everyone would rather be up at the top rather than languishing in the second 11, so there's yer incentive - you've joined up, all you have to do now is drop in once in a while to add your miles and appear in the top grouping.

good work, will have to remind myself of the commuting heights now to add them too. I have got a record of how many times I have ridden in (and possibly also the weather, windspeed, wind direction, perceived exertion, bke, elapsed time and how much money I saved by not taking the train - ahem. It started out for the latter so I could monitor my 'bike fund' but then I started adding more stuff at the same time!), but I will be short of all my non-commute rides as I haven't a clue where I've been and how far I climbed in the process. And I'm in the top 10 for August mileage so far - woohoo!

Yes - I agree - we must demand commitment from everyone. In fact I suggest we remove 100 miles for every week that they don't update!!!

I'm off to Nurburgring next thursday

    What are you taking?

You'll have an extra day commuting on me this week. I'm off to England for a couple of days on Wednesday, so I'm trying to keep up the miles this week. Was a bit thwarted by the rain last night though.

So not much more cycling this week, but on the plus side I will be able to indulge in curry, proper beer and english breakfasts :D

Then some miles at the weekend to work it off :!:

A pencil and notepad! Off to cover the Le Mans Series race there, but hopefully might get a lap on the Nordschleife with one of the drivers on the Friday or the Saturday night, they love scaring journos silly!

Chris - I've added my height gain (and am King of the Mountains at the moment, although there are only 3 of us who have seen a hill according to the stats (and I think they might be in m, not feet), just an inconsistency - it asks for height in feet, but then the confirmation page says they have been added in metres. Just a niggle for you to fix when there is no still-tacky coloured decorating substances that you need to observe.

Fixed it - a silly one to miss. Reading back through the thread there did seem to be a clamour for height to be added. Odd that only 3 have done so.

Give it time... Think people are working out what their commute entails from various sites/sources. My data is from memory map (highly reccomended product) and confirms its 420 m height gain on the way in, 351 on the way home, so 771m a day or 2530'. Then I've added a bit for mtb rides and non-commuting road rides, but its probably under if anything. Still, I'll enjoy the polka dots whilst it lasts!

Haven't worked out how I'm going to do it yet - which will probably have to wait for the weekend now. It won't be a lot though.

#1 in height gain (and that is a conservative estimate)

looking at your profile, that commute must be about 250m height gain both ways (must be fun on the way home!) I guess your height is coming from non-commuting rides in the peaks too though. Then again, you have been almost twice as far as me this year, so you are probably right about it being conservative.
