Looks set to stay until the weekend at least

If its not too biblical at home time I will cycle home with a 30mph breeze on my back, but if it is any way dodgy I wont be risking getting blown over an A road on my way home.

I am slowly but surely losing my marbles. I bailed out last night because it was hosing it down but mostly because I had loads of work to catch up on from being away last week..

So this morning I decided to get out early and come the long way into work to make up for my night off. I left the house at 7.30 and within 400 yards from home the heavens opened and basically didn't stop til I got to the office.

The headwind was just unbelievable. I nearly got blown off by lorries blasting past me a couple of times, and I reckon I swallowed more of the spray from the standing water than I did from my bottle.

But to illustrate how stupid this is getting "The Lovely Mary" brought dry kit in for me, and because she thought I'd be riding home tonight and would need dry rainwear she also brought my best waterproof reflective jacket in which she'd washed and dried for me last night. She thought I'd need to get another long one in tonight to keep in touch with Rich and Will. How cool is that?

She really is just the best race crew anyone could ask for .........

Pah, MTFU and use damp smelly kit, covered in road grime like the rest of us

Honestly some of us are so spoilt we're in danger of losing touch with what it's all about. Cycling is nothing if it doesn't involve a large degree of discomfort and pain, just ask any old timer on a club run

Next you'll be having a support vehicle follow you like ITB does.

What is all this "bailing out" nonsense?
  • Big ride planned for Friday in S. Wales and I wasn't going to say anything but I'm doing a 100 as well this weekend and just want to get a bit of rest in earlier in the week so I've got plenty in my legs.

And as for "The Lovely M" : jealousy is not an attractive trait ...

And is it true that ITB has someone run alongside him with an umbrella when it's raining?

No rest for me, another club night and 40+ miles tomorow, 40'ish on Sunday, 100+ on Monday, and then tues/we'd off to get the month off to a good start.

Don't forget ITB, turbo miles don't count. +1 on the speed work, I really suffered against the young fast guys at club training last night

I won't hit 1000 for the month - I've missed two midweek rides this month.

I would expect to be there or thereabouts come April through to September, all things being well :)

After 2 weeks trying to keep in zone 2 on my commute, and being passed by OAP, POB and dogs on unicycles, I was late this morning, so had to bomb it.
Result: 1Mph faster, and best time reduced from 44mns to 38.
Looks like the fitness is slowly getting there (and 2 weeks of non smoking means hills are that little bit easier too)

nice one, doubt your lungs will be feeling much of a difference yet, so if you stay off them, you should see much bigger improvements in the medium term future (and have more cash for bike bits). Mate of mine stopped smoking after years and the difference to his riding was frankly incredible from about 6 months on, one of the reasons he has binned them for good

I know, it's probably the placebo effect, but hey, if it works...
I have to stay that cycling helps staying off them, it's only when the weather got really bad last year that I used it as an excuse not to cycle, and ended up starting again.

This time's the good one though, I know it (after all, managed to stop for 5 years, so I don't see why I couldn't do it again, and this time for good)

I tried to keep up with Fast-Dan-from-Deanston last night on my commute home. Normally I can manage this OK (I suspect he's being kind :-) ), but yesterday we had a tailwind....
I was doing fine going uphills, which held us back to under 25mph, but on the downhill grade I was trying to sustain nearly 30mph... about 145rpm.
I can keep that up for short descents no problem, but my lungs won't hold it for ten minutes at a stretch!!

If I hadn't been grinding into the same wind that morning at 45rpm, I'd think I might be undergeared.... but this is this first time in a couple of years that I've been caught out.

    Cheers,
    W.

I hate this stupid table with a passion

I was sitting at home last night realising i needed to get some good miles in today as I was off and it was only forecast rain (I really need to learn to pay attention to what people say) I planned out a route only to take some wrong turnings and get well and truely lost.

then the wind hit, just checked and it was recorded at 28mph at times where i was cycling but minmum 20, no wonder at times i wasnt moving that much

to top it all off after 40 miles I got a flat, not a happy bunny I tell ya

I took a shortcut home, the wind had beaten me and I wasnt going to do another 20 miles as my hands were like ice after changing tube, another 10 miles though and 50 for the day :)

managed to wangle getting out of work early tommorrow so if its not arctic again ill do a longer ride then

just started snowing in birmingham, and headwinds to 35 mph on the way back. Missed lunch today, I can't actually face 19.1 miles into a headwind of snow on an empty tank after 100 miles in the last 2.5 days. Those stats don't compute for me, no matter how much MTFU you add to the equation...
