In that case so should all the miles people do in flat places - eg London
OMG yes! I'd zoom up the table.

I'm up for that too - Kent is pretty hilly and my commute from London to Kent is almost entirely up hill. :D
+1 to that, whereabouts do you commute porgy? I do gravesend to Greenwich, our paths may have crossed

personally I always play in the knatts valley area, some great hills around there

Welling - Holborn - Welling which involves an uphill stretch whichever way you look at it - quite often ill extend the uphill stretch by heading out to erith then back to Welling and if i'm feeling really up for it - take in shooters Hill.

I've been doing the run out to rochester at the weekends - via Gravesend - there's just about no flat bits between Bexleyheath and Gravesend. But I do feel myself getting gradually fitter.

Just had to check where Knatts valley is - haven't been out in Kent long. Turns out I was riding round there just two weeks ago - very pleasant - and quite hilly too.

Our paths may well have crossed in that case, look out for a red jacket, pink Condor and a blue rucksack. I've got two routes, Crayford-Bexleyheath-Shooters Hill-Greenwich or if I'm on a recovery ride I'll miss Crayford and drop down through Bexley Village, Blackfen, Eltham etc which is a little flatter.

The Knatts Valley and Eynsford area is a great place to ride, a few hills of note are Vigo Hill (a really nasty bastard), Exedown Road, and Birling Hill. The legs need a rest this weekend but next time you're headed out that way give me a shout and I'll introduce you to a few of them
pain is temporary, the glory of beating your mates to the top of the hill lasts forever.....................

OK - having missed a week of cycling I'm itching to get out this weekend - but after that - sure - though my relative lack of fitness still shows when it comes to hills.

It's a cheap hybrid for me to get into work every day.

I'm still looking to get a proper bike later in the year.

a Transeo GT 3.0 - it was seriously marked down from it's original price - I gave it a go and it felt good.

I wouldn't go that far - if I understand you correctly - but I reckon this will see me through the summer...by then I might have a grand or so set aside for the next one.

You don't agree that any kind of back is vastly superior to no bike?

I would agree that almost any bike is vastly superior to no bike.

some bikes are just a waste of good cash tbh. If it can't cope with 30 miles a day for weeks on end then it's worse than useless to me.

But then, would it be the bike not coping with 30 miles, or you not coping with the bike for 30 miles?

Just pulling your leg, though. At the moment, commuting on the girlfriend's Sirrus, which is a fairly decent bike, but is too small for me, and I can't wait for the cycle to work scheme so I can get my hands on a Fratello (or a CX, but that's another topic)

If only facilities at work hurried up kicking out people who don't use their bike parking space and gave me one, I could use my roadie...

(and yeah, bike, not back. Will teach me to try and sneak a post in a tiny window when the boss is in the room)

It was me not coping up until January - but ultimately it was my bike that proved to be the lightweight in this relationship.

I have some disturbing news seems some people (yes you know who you are, lurker!) have been doing 400 miles in a week

    This will not do......

In the 6th form a schoolfriend used to commute from Stroud to Tonbridge. That seemed a little insane to me then.

    Typo: Strood, Rochester

I can't seem to get the address of the route for google maps, but it is about 20-miles each way

Arrgh, bad cold this week so only cycled twice, just under 50-miles. I won't even bother putting it in for this week.

With just 19 miles to go I declare today an official itboffin REST day :D

Have you seen it out there? it's cats & dogs

Interesting ride home last night/this morning, my DX light ran out of juice halfway home however it was so bright I didn't bother with the spare. Front dérailleur committed suicide with was not much fun, meh! had to MTFU.

Got back from Washington yesterday at about 3:30 (after a 3 hour delay in Newark - all thanks to the BA strike last weekend  )... and went straight out on the bike. :D

I was so tired I thought I was going to fall asleep riding along!!!

Anyway another quick spin this morning keeps me on target to make 800 miles for the month, hopefully that'll keep me top 10 MTD.

Just added myself here. Currently in at 27th!

Wish I'd known about it last year - I'd have been second with exactly 8,500 miles.

Doubt I'll do that sort of amount this year as the weather has led to a poor start and I'd already decided I was having an easier year, it's a good incentive though - hopefully it'll get me moving a bit.

    EDIT - Just checked, 8500 was in 2008. 2009 was actually 8,772.8.
