Hello again Graeme T! You had a good start to the year but here I am again, I remember duelling for a few months with you last year! I have for the first time today passed the barrier of "average", next goal is to get into the top 40, which I reckon is as good as it will get this year, though I reckon that will be pretty good in itself looking at the sort of miles people are clocking in with already.
  • Chaps - what's the score with discrepancies between my bike computer and say Bikely.com mileages??

My inbound route measures 21.2 on my bike computer but I've just plotted it on bikely and it's 24.7 miles. Equally my longer route home measures 27.2 on the computer but 29.4 on bikely?

I know it's not much but it's probably worth an extra 20+ miles per week??

Don't want to be pedantic but what's the form??

Route extended again, along the back road instead of the shorter main road route. Think it will be permanent even though I thought I was going to die going up the few short but steep hills :(

I'd say Bikely is going to be more accurate so go with that. The guys in the top ten may say otherwise

Dropped 2 places due to 2 new entries with 1000+ miles but not jumped as of yet.

Of out tonight to take out the 2 above me then slowly eat away at the next few until the weekend when the big miles come out to play.
  • Being conservative it probably represents about 10-12% discrepancy with my stated overall mileage which would theoretically give me another 180 or so miles and put me up at about 1720 YTD??

Don't think I'd be very popular Benno :wink::wink:

No cycling today. I've decided my old bones need a day off.

Hoping to have a bit of an extended commute tomorrow though - which involves visiting one of our outlying depots.

I only need to get to 400 miles by end of day Sunday - so having quite a relaxed week....though I'm sure my place in the table will suffer as a result.

I say otherwise. Assuming your wheel dia is set correctly, your computer should be spot on. certainly a 10-12% error would be a very large one for what is basically a counter

However, if it makes you happy, bung em in, it's only delaying the ineviatable......

  • No fine : I'll leave everything as is.

SWMBO has reminded me that I do have a Garmin thingammyjig somewhere that I only ever wore for running. I'll dig it out for tomorrow and check it out on that.

When I first started cycle commuting I had a 120m climb that hit 1:10 in 2 places. For the 1st 6 weeks I genuinely felt physically sick at the top of it, every single time. Over time though, it just became "the big hill" and I just got up it, sometimes faster than others and sometimes out of puff, but never as bad as that first month and a bit now. I've abandoned that hill now and do another one instead, only this one has "Pass" in its title rather than "hill", which is so much cooler (and it has had ice at the top of it almost permanently for the past month or so too).

I go straight out of the door and straight up the hill at the end of the route in my sig. The initial steep bit is only about 200 feet but it is a harsh start and my legs don't like it one bit :(

yeah but what follows looks rather nicer! I saw a tv prog which says that strong exercise in the first 45 mins after getting up is a bad idea as it can be fairly harmful to your body. It takes me about 30 mins from up to out the door at the moment, but then the next 15 mins is pretty gentle, including a good canal towpath stint, so I'm nicely warmed up before the pass!

That's all I need to justify my continuing to go round Shooters Hill every morning rather than over the top.

something to do with blood vessels still being largely dilated and blood pressure being low, then suddenly placing great demands on your body whilst in that state meaning heart attacks were something like 3 times more likely. That's what I remember anyway, it was a program about the body clock and how we shouldn't and couldn't abuse it, but should live by it instead. Very interesting actually - if you are a night shift worker you are screwed basically! Here's a review, I was nearly right:

If it was on a TV prog I am comforted as it will almost certainly be wrong! It is certainly a noticeably harder climb than it would be from warm though. Mind you, that 4 minutes of climbing is certainly within 45 minutes of rising.

Otherwise it's not too bad aside from the the rather sneaky litte rise at half distance - that is a bit of a git (though, if I die at the top, the staff at Bob Jackson cycles might rescue me!). In a way worse on the return as the steep bit downhill gets you up to 30 ready for a Russian roulette of cars crossing from either side joining and leaving the byepass. Really you are running a gauntlett and a couple of times I've overtaken cars on the hill on the far side that decided to pull out on me. If I stop posting here, that bit will be the reason why.

Horizon is probably better than most and it was quite a well-presented, well reasoned programme really - certainly better done than any of this "Carbon Dioxide is killing the planet" nonsense.

I'm actually surprised I didn't feel sick the way I was huffing and puffing. But I know from experience it'll get easier.

nooooooooo bikless until saturday. Number 1 bike has a snapped chain and number 2 bike has no break cables.

Still did my fastest 9.3 miles tonight and went back up to 62nd in the table. Should still be able to break 100 for the week at the weekend assuming the legs hold out.
