Some events do, some don't. Some events rely on a number of no-shows so they may sell 1700 places and cater for 1500 riders/runners, knowing from experience that only 1400 will turn up. So if one rider turns up and takes the place of a no-show it's no big deal. But if 101 do it, all of a sudden someone's left thirsty at a feed station.
The alternative is to allow swaps but sell less places. This puts up the cost per entry, particularly as they have to employ people to man the 'swap' desk.Higs0 -

To go with the loose fitting combat pants, t-shirt and orthopaedic shoes, I thought I'd use the Bianchi-
I'm going to try out some of these Mavic R-Sys wheels with it too-
For sustennce I'm going to eat as many Peanut Clif bars as I can.0 -
Anyone care to hazard a guess what time you'll be coming up Macc Forest or past Lamaload?
I may come along and heckle.Higs0 -

Alex, I hope the wheels I am buying off you later are not in the same condition?
Once I have Alex's wheels then the only other decision is whether to ride the winter bike with mudguards and compact chainset or the summer bike which has a standard chaniset. So. A heavy bike with 34x25 gearing or a light bike with 42x25 gearing, hmmm.....0 -
Chris, I'd go with the winter bike with compact...
The wheels I'm selling still have some spokes in them and aren't too buckled if I do say so myself...0 -

forget heckling - comes and push me up!
Assuming I start at 8.30, I hope to be there around 2-3ish. See you there :-)
I feel crap; like I'm on the verge of a cold - this always happens before a big ride. My brain tries to make my body feel crap in an attempt to get me out of doing it.
Right, heading off to knutsford to register now.0 -
Come and have a brew chez NapoleonD afterwards!0

I went out this morning for an hour, to test the bike and kit. Eventually all was well. A bit windy and cold but the forecast is for less wind and a bit warmer wooohoooo.
Got all my bottles ready and gels, may even have an early night!
See you all tomorrow.Just a fat bloke on a bike0 -

got a slight issue.....after my chain snapped last week I bought a new kmc one this am with a master link. However I cannot manage to remove some of the links to shorten it to get the right tension...
any ideas? they do not have the parallel lines which my old one seemed to, and it is getting v frustrating as no chain = no C Cat!0 -
I can try and sort it if you bring it to mine...0
-
Nap,
thanks for the offer.....but its a long walk from mine to yours!!
edit: googling articles on shortening the chain to length with a power link and it mentions "cutting" it....does it have to be physically cut or is there a way of getting the pin out? (I do not have bolt cutters)
Quote:
"Size the new chain (a new chain will be too long and need to be shortened). Wrap the chain around the biggest chainring in the front and the biggest cog in the rear. (Do not go through the derailleur to size-by adding 1.5 links, you are compensating for not going through the derailleur) Bring the two ends together and add 1.5 links by eyeballing it, this is where you cut the chain to size. Since the Powerlink connector acts as half of a link, you will only add 1.5 links. You should have inner links at both ends now. The Powerlink will connect these two together.
Once you have the proper size, thread the chain through the derailleur and put on the small cog and small ring to give you some slack.
Join the inside links together with the Powerlink and you are now finished"0 -
You use an imaginatively titled 'chain tool'.
I have one. (In fact I carry one on all my rides in case my chain breaks).
I suggest you get yourself sharpish to your nearest bike shop and buy one now to get it done, they are a doddle to use, especially with powerlink chains...0 -
I have a chain tool & it was reasonably easy to remove the old chain.
However I cannot seem to get the pin through on the new chain to shorten it by the couple of lengths necessary so that once the master link is attached the chain isnt sagging.....0 -
Doh!
Try the next link either side?
Sounds like you have hit upon a mare!0 -
All signed on, I am number 109 if anyone sees me tomorrow. Think I saw Popette whilst I was there.0

She shouldn't be hard to spot...

The KMC pins are a little tough to get out, but once you get it moving they come out easy. I fitted a KMC 10x the other week, and although initially getting the pin moving took some doing, they do come out all OK.0 -
665 here.
They were selling gels and bars in the hall. Will they be given out free tomorrow? I only want to take enough to get me to the first stop as my pocket is quite small.
I'm also going to take my phone and ring the missus when I'm at the bottom of Mow Cop so she can wait in the pub.0 -

I don't think they will give out free gels and bars, I think you might get some energy drink at the stops, but I doubt you will be able fill a whole bottle with the stuff however, in the past it has been a cup of energy drink.
I always take enough for myself. I will have 3 energy bars, a few gels, and some energy drink powder. They will have other food not doubt at the stops, like banana's and cakes, though never having done this one before, not exactly sure what they will provide.0 -
Good luck to everyone doing this, I shall drag myself out of bed and try and make my way over to mow cop around 11 to offer a bit of support. Forecast looks ok now, if a little cold, hope the hail and rain hold off (unlike today).0

Number 1192 here. Reporting in.
Just done a recce of Mow Cop on my way back home. I think I am taking NapoleonD's advice and using the lower geared winter bike. Weather looks better for tomorrow but the roads will still be greasy and damp. The winter muck & grit is still all over the place and the road surfaces are not great. Spinning the gears and comfort seems a better idea than grinding the gears and bling at this time of year I reckon.
See you all en-route.
Great wheels Alex, thanks very much.

You know it makes sense Chris! Enjoy the wheels.
I wanted to go and stand at the start of the Lamaload descent with a warning sign but-
1 - I can't stand for more than 2 minutes.
2 - The Mrs wouldn't drive me up there.
3 - It's nice and cosy sat on my settee watching telly under the influence of opiates.0 -

Any ideas?! Give me your correct mobile number via PM!
I can sort the chain when I pick you up in the morning!!!!

That bit reminds me of sitting on the sofa off my face following my shoulder op. Great days  I may still have a box of Tramadol somewhere..........
I'm gutted you are not there tomorrow, I'll try to do a decent job on your behalf.0 -
No 1237 for me, looking forward to it now. Not too much of a baptism of fire for my first sportive I hope, at least the weather looks set to be pretty fine and that damned wind will have subsided.
Good luck everyoneIf I can feel the pain in my arse, I mustn't be hurting my legs enough.0 -

Hi , picked up my number today - 676. I managed to put the number upside down on my bike (Fortunately, I'd got plenty of spare cable ties.)
As mentioned before, I've only done 50 miles just once and I've done approx. 150 miles in total this year. To compensate, I'll be bringing plenty of food & drink . I've got spare inner tubes and a comprehensive toolkit. It even has one of those tools for getting stones out of horses hooves - you never know what might happen.
Please say hi before/during/after the event. Feel free to smirk & sneer at my elderly and shabby (t)rusty steed; I really won't mind !
I'll be hoping to get going soon after 8.30am..
Have a great Sunday !0
