Dearedeareme, looks like the RaceBlades are needed for Sunday....

Out of interest who's going to bother with mudguards/raceblades if the weather is really wet?

I have taken my mudguards off, and they are down South, so I will be without any, I even forgot my overshoes, it isn't supposed to be freezing this time of year :?

Luckily I have got most of my winter stuff with me, was just hoping not to have to wear it again until winter.

Weather forecasts are always pants arent they !

I'm gonna go with lots of kit and choose on the day. No guards cos they are only on my fixie - and thats not really gonna cope with Mow Cop very well.

I have taken my blades off but after a thorough arse soaking today (no smutty comments you buggers (I love it really)) think I'll put them back on before Sunday.

My gloves aren't waterproof. Wet gloves are crap!

I think I'll be using the tried and tested technique of looking out the window on the day.

It's going to be a beautiful day - I can just feel it! Lots of lovely people on shiny bikes and lycra everywhere you look. How could a bit of sleet spoil that?!

(well, probably quite easily I expect, I hate having freezing cold knackers)

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!

Well I've never cycled more than 50 miles and I've only done that once ! I've never cycled in the company of experienced cyclists, almost all of whom will be fitter, younger and have better bikes and look the part. My aim is just to get around before the event finishes ! Yes, I get 'worked up' when I read how others are considering whether they should use their winter bike/which wheels to use etc. in the knowledge that my very shabby bike is worth about £50 - probably less to others :). (Sadly, I don't have a choice of wheels, don't have a choice of anything actually!) My bike is so old, it has a freewheel rather than a cassette.

Obviously, I don't fit the 'profile' of most of the entrants, but I'm still entitled to take part. IF I enjoy it (as I expect), then perhaps I'll consider buying a carbon something that shows I'm conforming with the rest. Perhaps I'll become a touch cynical too ! :) Bah, humbug !!! :D:D

    Red,
I'm really looking forward to Sunday but I am getting a little worked up too. As soon as I start cycling, the nerves will go and I'll just enjoy the ride. For me, I'm a bit nervous because it's the longest I've ridden since I had my heart thing - also, it was the Cheshire Cat last year when things were clearly not right with my ticker (spent 2 and a half hours over 200bpm and had to cut my planned ride of 100 miles down to 60 miles). I haven't done all that many sportives so it still feels a bit new to me - I'm sure that as the year goes on and I get more under my belt, I won't be doing this amount of fretting and will just turn up and ride. Except the Etape - I know now that my thighs (and possible other body parts) will be quivering on the start line
    I suppose everyone is different.

I can't explain it. I am getting a little worried about it though. Especially after our Audax experience.

Let's hope nobody stops dead in the middle of 40 cyclists doing 25 mph this time!
  • I'm intending to wear a Helly Hansen as a base layer, I was just wondering, would a merino vest be better ?

Metcheck - 8-10 westerly - looking better at the mo - currently fitting an SRAM 11-32 - should be sufficient :D

have you tried them both before? I would wear whatever you've tried in training under similar conditions (which are looking better aren't they?)

Saying that, I went and bought a new coat but it's the same make as my old one just in a smaller size. I've tried it out in training and it's good.

My clothing is sorted now. I'm wearing fleecy longs, base layer, black gore oxygen jacket, fleecy headband, merino socks, overshoes & white helmet. I've got a very thin but windproof jacket which I'm going to put in my back pocket - just in case.

I'm going to wear a T-shirt, loose fitting combat trousers and orthopaedic shoes.

    Clothing Options 1:

Merino long-sleeve base layer (crew neck) + merino long sleeve base layer (high collar) + Gerolsteiner jersey + buff round neck + hat + long tights + overshoes + Seal skinz socks + water proof gloves

    Clothing Option 2:

Merino long-sleeve bas layer (crew neck) + Gore Tool jersey + Gore Gilet + buff round neck + long tights + overshoes + Seal Skinz socks + water proof gloves

Frantic checking of Met Check will dictate what gets put on, but I will probably bring the entire wardrobe with me anyway!

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • Well I have decided to wear some shorts for this...had my legs covered up enough, and I'm sure they will be working hard enough to not feel any coolness...

A GB cycling top also arrived this am, so considering wearing this over a "branded" one....

Alex, I'm really keen to hear your feeding strategy for the day

BTW, what is everyone having for tea on Sunday night. We're definitely having Chinese Takeaway.
  • This is turning into more of a high-end fashion show than a bike ride..... :)

white cotton t-shirt, aldi ski top thing, altura waterproof jacket & then cycling top (either branded or GB)....either tights or bib shorts (but want to go with shorts).

    white socks & shoes...job done!

As it is a band night at my local Irish pub on sunday...a few pints of Guiness after a nice chicken pasta meal I'm cooking Saturday in readiness....

is that Saturday or Sunday night?

Another question about food - does anyone know if we can buy hot food at the end? It's the thought of that that keeps me going in those last few miles.
  • Well i hope these weather forecasts are right. becasue right now, i am sat in Belfast Harbour waiting for a ferry back to Blighty, and it is blowing a Force 8.
I am going to be as sick as a dog for the next 2 hours.
So this gale had better blow itself out before Sunday or God help us all.

Well I suppose I'll join in the fashion parade. I'll be blue and black with a black and white Trek and a really crappy helmet that is probably too big for me.

Is anyone else on here getting sponsored for charity on this? I'm raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and if I get a time of under 8 hours the donations go up. Kinda glad the weather's improved now!

It's a nice big Sunday roast for me when I get back :D

    Hang on a bleedin' minute!!

You lot are getting an indian, sunday roast, chinese or night in the pub etc. and when I get back I'm getting lumbered with baby-sitting duties while my mrs goes off for a night out with the lads from work........something's not right here.

Don't worry Pugwash - it's not that great in our house either. Mr P and me will both be riding on Sunday and when we get back, our babysitter will run for the hills leaving two bonked out parents doing our best with three kids under the age of 6.

I think we're going to have a Disney marathon and early nights all round.
