Holly sh1t, that's awful! Good thing it wasn't a lorry or a van. You saw it happening?

Reading the comments, I see the cyclist is recovering well. :)

Coming to a traffic island and a road fork I'm waiting for the van behind me to make a move. Once he gets halfway alongsode the island he decides to overtake but clips the kerb on the right and you can hear the squeal of rubber as he does so.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myf1F4v6wmQ

Coming through the centre of Brizzle and silver carman reckons I should be on the left in the gutter/doorzone right where I could get taken out by buses pulling away from the kerb. Two blasts of the horn in the space of 250m, a little waver from me as I look behind to see what his problem is.

  • The funniest bit of that second clip is the woman at about 5secs in running across the road. That just made my night.

She was one of the who think they can make it across the road before the green man changes, we've all done it TBH.

Over-the-bonnet moment for me this morning.

This is the 3rd time someone has pulled out of this road on me in the last 3 months, it's getting beyond a joke now.

Blimey - could have been a lot worse.

Have you seen the other 'head on' posted a bit below yours? That's been heavily discussed on cyclechat.co.uk and a biker identified that the issue could be that the cyclist was heading straight towards the driver - along his line of sight. The driver SMIDSYs it because there is no lateral movement of the cyclist to grab his attention from what he's expecting to see (the brain developed to detect movement - so going straight towards someone is 'harder' to see). Looking at yours, it's similar in that the road coming in from the left is just on the outside of a small bend so that you're heading straight towards him. If he's not actively looking, then he's not going to see you.

    Yeh that head-on was nasty!

Just on the other side of that corner is a set of traffic lights, the road the driver was emerging from offers no view of anything coming up the hill towards you, so you have to creep out into traffic. I suspect he's done a quick glance and either missed me as you say, or I've been obscured by the ped, a tree or something else. Obviously, a PROPER look would have cured this but hey-ho, shlt happens :)

I'm sure some people will disagree with me on this, but I'm not reporting the driver. The guy was absolutely in bits, he looked worse off than me. Instantly admitted full responsibility offered to pay for any damage, drive me to work/hospital/home etc. He now has a cyclist shaped dent in his bonnet and a smashed windscreen as a reminder too, he's learnt his lesson. Reporting him will only turn an overall positive into a negative imo. It was a simple accident, nothing more. No lasting dameage done, move on

From a legal point of view you are supposed to report all collisions with the police within 24 hours. You should be able to get a form from your local station. If you don't want to take it further that's entirely up to you.

Another why?? moment today. Got the light sequence right as I use them everyday so know when to pedal and when to brake and left the fiesta at the lights which he didn't like. He caught me within 100yds as I was watching the coach trying to pull out then Mr Fiesta pulls in 6 foot in front of me.

Very sensible, if you're absolutely sure that you're ok, then move on, and be thankful it wasn't worse. Hopefully he'll actively look in the future.

Do you think it'll change your riding?
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

To be honest I very much doubt it will. I always take primary on the approach to that junction and slow to around 20mph anyway, as it's a real hotspot for SMIDSY moves and there is a set of lights just round the corner.

Other than that, I don't see what else I can do. This was just one of those things, not much fun, but it's something you know is going to happen at some point. If I'm lucky, this will be the worst scrape I ever get into.

Could you show the footage to your local councillor then? If junction layout is a factor in the accident, and it is a bit of a black spot, it may be possible that they can re-arrange it.

Glad you're ok, I think you should get a lottery ticket, it looks like your luck is in at the moment!!

    ContourHD 1080p.

Same as Gaz545's... Well, they're the same in the mode I use it in by the time the vids make it onto YouTube.

    Yes :)

The reason I began wearing a helmet cam was because of an accident where I got knocked off but I had to let the driver get away scott free because I didn't have any evidence (no witness, etc).

I decided I wasn't going to let that happen ever again if I could possibly help it so I started researching helmet cams.

The more I thought about it the more I realised that if I'm ever in a situation where I need to rely on video evidence then I'd seriously regret not spending the money on something that can capture things (number plates, etc) clearly, even in low light.

So after spending a couple of weeks looking at all the videos I could find from all the main helmet cams I decided it was worth getting a Contour.

£280 for a camera.... but I keep thinking if I'd had the camera this morning I'd have a video to give the police of a prime example of dangerous driving (or at the very least due care)

Over-the-bonnet moment for me this morning.

No editing software on the work laptop, so you'll have to forward to about 3min 45 and watch from there.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EocfuZML-YQ

Car pulls out of side street without doing proper checks, sees me at last minute, tries to bang it in reverse, misses, road is wet so despite my big brakes, I slide into the side of him, over the bars onto the bonnet, then proceed to smash his windscreen with my fist in a temper.

After that, for some reason I come over all polite and British, asking if HE is ok and so on. :?

To be fair to him, he was massively apologetic (and quite rightly so). There was no damage to me or the bike (thank god I chose to take the big steel 456 this moring) and I had just bashed his windscreen in. He honestly did look like he was about to faint.

Many thanks to the peds who rushed over to make sure I was ok, and to the lady from the ironing shop over the road for offering me a cuppa.

This is the 3rd time someone has pulled out of this road on me in the last 3 months, it's getting beyond a joke now.

good example of why as a driver you should always look twice. there is a good chance his casual 'is there a car coming' look was blighted by the very large slow moving object in the beige coat on the pavement. in no way excusing him just makes me aware when i am i the car to do more than passing glances..
