Wow, still got lots of posts to sift through...
"When you're not cycling..." refers to me rather loosely atm as I've only cycled to work the once and that was a Sunday test-run! Plan to do it tomorrow and Friday though, weather-permitting (crap excuse, weather, but it's to be my first run during rush hours)..!
ANYWAY.
Am currently struggling to do all my hobbies at once - so while I will list them all, I barely manage to do each of them once a year - more like once every 2 or 3 years:-
* Sailing tall ships (
* Sailing dinghies (I love a nippy Topper)
* Skiing
* Swing dancing (lindy hop, balboa, occasional tap, collegiate shag - yes it's a dance - google them! It's all the crazy-legs 40s jitterbug stuff that I love)
* Geeking out on various forums, MSN, the book-a-de-Face, etc.
* Real-ale drinking (CAMRA member, yeah baby!)
* Am-dram (once I get myself back into a group)
* Travelling about - mainly seeing family in Stockholm
* Being taken to gigs (only book the odd one myself, otherwise I tend go along to everyone else's favourite bands)
* Planning my fancy dress for the next party
* Oh, is a boyfriend a hobby?
Then there's the usual TV/cinema/shopping/walks/nights out that I assume we all do a bit of now and again.

8. I can't read the Daily Mail without my blood pressure rising.
9. I try to read fiction but spend the time wishing I was reading something factual, even though I know the distinction between the two is sometimes not as broad as I would like.
10. I wish I could work to live, not live to work, but I can't stand doing something that I don't care about.

-
1. I'm very logical and analytical. I love to see how and why things work.
2. I did 3 years at uni, studying geography and maths. Dropped out after unsuccessfully repeating my 2nd year - I'd lost interest in the course and wanted to start working.
3. I love learning but get bored especially if i'm not making progress.
4. I like cats, they seem to like me too. I also like dogs and horses but I'm allergic to them.
5. I'm a terrible procrastinator. I'll do something about it next week :P
6. I like making lists and recording info and stats - bike rides for instance.
7. I'm brilliant at dreaming up things to do and then planning them, then finding reasons not to do them :?
8. I like drinking but not just for the sake of getting drunk. A crate full of the same drink bores me. Give me real ales and obscure lagers. I like whisky too.
9. I like cooking. Doesn't mean i'm any good at it though.
10. I detest narrow-minded ignorance and unfounded cynicysm. And disrespect for others' wishes and opinions. And shallow behaviour.
11. I always say i don't care what people think of me, but in reality the thought frequently stops me in my tracks.
12. I speak a bit of French from the pre-GCSE days. Would like to learn it properly.
13. My favourite books are biographies and travel. Especially cycling-related ones.
14. I do lots of hillwalking. I've climbed all the mountains over 3000ft in England and Wales and making good headway in Scotland.
15. I like visiting cities but give me a remote mountaintop/mountain road any day.
16. I like the kind of films that's got so many twists and turns I have to watch it at least twice to 'get it'. Likewise with books.

It's bizarre how many traits I share with others. For what it's worth, here are my 25:
1 I was a county level gymnast and can still do the splits.
2 I do believe that climate change is absolutely man made - I work with the country's best scientists and they have convinced me.
3 I went to live in Italy in 2000 without a job, not knowing a single person over there and not speaking a word of the language other than 'Ciao bella'.
4 I suffer from depression when I am overwhelmed by feelings of my inadequacy and hideousness.
5 I read Wuthering Heights at 18 and was so moved it was another 10 years before I could bring myself to re-read it.
6 I love language and the components of language. I may be a pedant, but it really does distress me when people say things like 'I have a meeting with yourself'.
7 I love the intellectual exercise of learning a new language.
8 Passito de Pantelleria is the nectar of the Gods.
9 I have the attention span of a gnat.
10 I am often accused of being 'autistic' (without meaning to offend anyone) as I used to have an exaggerated ability to remember dates and days of the week - if you tell me your birthday I can usually tell you within a couple of seconds what day of the week it was on this year or will be next year.
11 I am terrible with money and will be impoverished when I retire.
12 I am a very good cook and particularly good at putting together interesing menus
13 I currently have the smallest kitchen in the world - frustrating.
14 My right shoulder suddenly dislocated when I was 18 and came out a further 9 times before it was stablised. The pain is phenomenal.
15 I am lazy, lazy, lazy.
16 I have a resting body temperature of not quite 35C - this means I like cold rooms and fight with my colleagues to get the temperature in the office down below 25 degrees
17 I did a wine tasting course for four years and when I left for Italy I could identify most wine varietals by their bouquet, whether a wine was new world or old world and give a rough guess of its age. I then went to Italy, drank only sangiovese and sagrantino for 3 years and lost that ability.
18 I can count to 10 in six languages - English, French, Italian, German, Finnish and Thai
19 I laugh a lot, apparently.
20 When I was 20 I lived in San Francisco for 3 months and had some of the happiest times of my life.
21 I don't give blood because nobody can ever find the veins in my arms.
22 I learn best by doing.
23 I love playing board and card games.
24 In June I did a 76 mile sponosored ride and did it at my (then) fastest ever average speed.
25 Wanting what you have is much more likely to bring you happiness than having what you want.
26 I love, but give up too quickly on, puzzles like this - punctuate this: Peter where John had had had had had had had had had had had the examiner's approval.0 -

Peter, where John had had "had", had had "had had". "Had had" had had the examiner's approval.

Well that was interesting! I really should try and avoid more work whilst at work and check the forum more regularly as I've just read through all the "25 things" about you lot and spent a rather long time doing so (and I suspect rather annoyed my wife!) so here goes..........
1. I started college hoping to get 4 A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Computing
2. I left with none, but did find my soul mate.
3. I married that person almost 9 years ago.
4. Recent government reports from the environment seem to suggest I am being irresponsible for having more then 2 children............I have 5 and intend to have 1 more!
5. No matter how bad my day has been, one smile from any of the 5 kids is enough to make the whole world seem right.
6. Despite not finishing college I am still happy with my career. I hold several professional certifications from various IT companies - I could perform a certified warranty repair on your HP laptop, desktop or workstation!
7. I once completely stripped down and rebuilt a laptop (a HP NC6000 for you pedantic IT types!) in under 18 minutes after it was suggested it might be a "fun" team building exercise for my team at work.........
8. My job in IT allows me to fulfill my odd obsession for taking things apart, when I see a new laptop I want to tear it apart to see what's inside!
9. I am also fascinated at how things are made, consequently I wake up at 7:30 each day at the weekend and watch the "Hows it made" programs on Discovery+1 for about 2 1/2 hours.
10. I used to run for my local athletic club (Croydon Harriers) and during my U13 season managed to compete to a national Gold level standard in both the 100 and 200m sprints. My PB's where 12.9 and 26.4 respectively.
11. I am a poor loser. I stopped running for my local running club during the U15 season when I stopped winning. I managed to improve my PB's to 12.4 and 25.7 and could also long jump 5.15m :-)
12. I don't think anybody takes part in sport for the sake of taking part. You take part because you want to win, if winning doesn't count why keep score ? ;-)
13. I won the award for "Best U13 performance of the year" when taking part in the Battersea League athletics competition. Oddly this was for a shot putt throw of 8.95m rather then a running event.
14. Whilst taking part in a London wide multi-sports event when I was at high school I caused a rather large accident at the start of the mountain bike race. I made a sprint for a wet, grassy chicane and wiped out, taking several other people with me. I recovered quite a few places but couldn't catch the Chinese guy decked out in head to toe lycra on the expensive looking bike!
15. The following year I overheard someone commenting that they hope they don't have a crash again at the start this year.........I tried my best to look innocent!
16. Me and reading don't really get along. I prefer fact to fiction and only managed to read The Hobbit because I couldn't use my bike and therefore had to use public transport 2 years ago.
17. I broke my mates arm at high school because he took my tennis ball. I did this by charging at him in the playground. He must have forgiven me because we where still friends for 5 years after that!
18. I have a bizarre sense of humor. I find Frankie Boyle funny but will also chuckle at the oldies like Tommie Cooper and Mike Reid! Consequently I can come out with some of the most obscene and offensive jokes and am genuinely surprised I've never had any complaint's lodged by work colleagues.
19. I have a fairly good memory, yet can forget the simplest things sometimes! I can recount the star date Captain Picard used in the season 7 finale "All Good Things" of Star Trek (47988) and Pi to 9 decimal places (3.141592654).
20. I am terrible at buying presents for my wife, I can never pick something out by thinking about it but know what is right for her if I see it.
21. I strongly disagree with Microsoft's business practices and can't understand why nothing was done earlier to stop their strangle hold on the IT industry. I am an avid supporter of Free and Open Source Software and do believe that it is the way forward.
22. Due to no. 21 I only have 1 PC in my house that runs solely MS software and that is my works laptop! The rest (10 in total by my quick estimate) mostly run on Ubuntu and my eldest has asked why her school doesn't use Edubuntu :-)
23. I swear a lot. It's not something I'm proud of but thought it only fair to mention!
24. I would love to learn to cook properly, I'm gradually getting better but really need to make more effort! Still I have the rest of my life to practise :-)
25. Last but not least.............I still haven't decided what I want from my career but do know that I enjoy solving a good technical problem that requires a deep understanding of the underlying system. I thrive on the sort of problems that scare or confound my colleagues :-D
I would add a 26th but it's not really about me..........it's about my brother but as we are related I think it should count.
At one point we both won awards for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 Science when at High School in the same year! He has followed on studying Physics and won a National Award last year for best student. His current line of research scares me (Quantum Information) and his dissertation made my head hurt just reading the introduction. I am very proud of him!0 -
17. I have a certificate for swimming one length of the pool.0
-
These are great, keep them coming! I too am surprised at how many traits I share with you lot and reading your lists has reminded me of many other "things" I could have written. Perhaps I'll expand my list to 50Today is a good day to ride0

Now, now. Don't lash out. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. In, out. In, out.

Damn it, Greg, I was mulling that over as I scrolled down and you spoiled my mulling by very selfishly posting the answer! How rude...0 -
My list:
1. Bad English- written or spoken- is one of my (many) pet hates. It's like so annoying, and that, innit?
2. Relationships? Nope. Never had one, past caring. I've had appalling taste in women anyway, so I'm better off single.
3. I don't drink, as I just don't like the taste of alcohol. For some reason that seems to confuse some people.
4. I can't swim, and I'm sure I'll do just fine at drowning if need be.
5. I don't do drugs either. I'm perfectly happy experiencing and feeling things without that kind of influence, thank you. And I like my lungs and nostrils in working order.
6. Religion- nope. I can appreciate a good church for its architecture, artwork, and so on, and appreciate other people's faith, but not if they think it makes them superior (or 'my religion's better than yours').
7. Intolerance, ignorance (deliberate or otherwise) and bigotry in all their forms are the biggest problems in the world. For example, I can't approve of Israel's recent action in Gaza, but nor can I sanction the casual anti-Semitism of many of the recent protests. Hamas aren't fluffy bunny rabbits who want peace and harmony, two wrongs do not make a right.
8. And no-one ever tells me what to think or feel. Try and you'll only make me angry.
9. I was on Tiswas in 1980.
10. I try and be careful with money. But I also like expensive stuff (quality costs!).
11. As far as I'm concerned, fashion is boring and stupid.
12. I know one phrase in Cantonese. Which can't be used in polite company.
13. I have no ambitions. I'm too hard on myself to ever be satisified. Not that I feel I've achieved anything anyway.
14. I do not dance.
15. Other people's 'guilty pleasures' are some of my favourite musicians. I refuse to be guilty about it. And why can't I like Jean-Michel Jarre, Slayer, Johnny Cash and Paul Simon? One after the other? I can, so there.
16. I can't be bothered with holidays any more. Might take one at some point, probably not.
17. I'm a Mac owner, but I don't consider myself obsessive about it. I just prefer OS X (and Apple hardware). And I have XP on the Mac as well. Choice is a good thing.
18. I enjoy really bad movies (along with really good ones). Mediocre ones, on the other hand....
19. I think you should always be prepared to have your opinions challenged. Who wants to agree all the time? I like arguing (as opposed to rows or squabbles).
20. I do play the lottery, and I wouldn't have a problem investing the money in the happiness of friends and family.
21. The art of good conversation means knowing when to shut up and listen. Which I don't always do.
22. I have the best best friend anyone's ever had.
23. Puddings/deserts are the main course of a meal for me. Handy that I have the kind of metabolism etc that means I never put on weight.
24. I'm a tea drinker. Coffee's OK, it just tastes all the same to me.
25. I'm not afraid of dying. It's living that's the problem.Dahon Speed Pro TT; Trek Portland

26 I love, but give up too quickly on, puzzles like this - punctuate this: Peter where John had had had had had had had had had had had the examiner's approval.
Peter, where John had had "had", had had "had had". "Had had" had had the examiner's approval.
Couldn't resist
