I hope you get sorted soon. At least your not missing much with this dodgy weather.

Another thing, just spotted in last months mbr. It says a banana skin decomposes in four weeks, what's going on there then?

Should be going on a Peak District ride on Sunday the 7th with some friends. No route decided yet, but we wanna be riding by 10am. I'll give more details if people want to join nearer the time.

I was in Art & Design Building today, had a look out for you but obviously didn't see ya.

Sorry for not posting sooner, only get on here a couple of times a week :(

    C2C Stuff:
First off, if you can swing the dates to mid June instead of may that would give you a light (daylight) advantage; If you are planning on going over Blacksail Pass, then Styhead pass as per the MBR route then you need at least 12 hours (if your v.fit), we took 15 hours and ended up arriving in Ambleside after 11pm.

Also, try and get a driver to carry the bulk of your gear, they can meet / pick you up in case of an emegencies. This also means you can carry the bear minimum on the day.

The first day is a serious killer, the first 20+ miles to the start of Ennerdale arn't so bad, but one you hit the passes (BlackSail if you are following the MBR route) things slow drastically. My hard tail is an old '93 KHS, trimmed down it wieighs in at 23 - 24 Ibs, it took 2 hours to walk up Blacksail! On the down hill it should be easier, it is ridable, but just remember, a spill here will end your C2C; with the numeber of walkers too it's only possible to ride short sections. The fun bit is the walkers exclaiming - "Your taking a bike down there! you must be mad!!"
So you get off Blacksail and down to Wasdale head; this is all pretty much rideable :) Then you hit Styhead pass, and yet another climb and hours of hiker-biker or hand-bagging! At the top of Styhead, your presentented with another long walk up another steep hill! This is another false summit, followed by another until you reach Sprinkling Tarn. Now keep going for about an hour till you hit Angel Tarn, once you pass this your onto Rossett Pike and all you can do down this is carry the bike! Every now and then you'll get a bit that is rideable, then you have to get off and carry.

Once at the bottom, you can resume some steady riding down towards Ambleside.

    noddyh wrote:
Which C2C are you doing? Me and a mate did the MBR one in 2008.

Spent the first 6 months of the year getting into shape

The MBR route is the most direct but most gruelling - 190+ miles XC in 4 days.

But the sense of achievment at the end is superb!

Yeah thats the one we are thinking of doing. Looking to do it in May, so trying to get in shape for it now.

It does look like a hard route, especially the first day. Hopefully do it in the same amount of days it took Mbr.

Been thinking of doing the C2C for a couple of years now, but I seriously need to get into shape if I'm going to complete it...

Do you have any recommendations of where to stay?

Where to stay, this caused massive deliberations during planning, so here goes - the B&B option died quickly due to many B&Bs having a 2 night minimum booking! Camping wasn't an option due to the extra kit and time needed each day. So we went with the hostel optoin. First off, the price, a YHA hostel is only about £12 per night, the backpacker (private) hostel in Ambleside is about a pound dearer, you get a breakfast for a couple of quid in a tin and all you have to do afterwards is washup your pots. For lunch, get a sandwich to go from the local sarnie shop, or make one before you leave the Hostel. The Hostels we used were - Ambleside Backpackers, Kirkby Steven YHA, then the last night was a B&B (because we couldn't get in the Osmotherly YHA Hostel)

The first day was a massivly difficult day, as well as long; it resulted in replotting all the second day by road and much of the third day. The forth day however was probably some of the best riding I have done - with a strong westerly wind we were hitting 30mph plus over the moors, arriving in Robin Hoods bay about 8 and half hours after leaving Ingleby Cross :)

I've got some photos if you want to see them - also numbers of the Hostel and B&B if you want them. PM me If you want to know more.

    Paul ;)

Isn't mud what its all about hey?

So so so so need to get out on my bike, all this snow and ice is so crap!

All kitted out now to attempt to do some proper DH this year. Got myself a full face lid and body armour to top off my knee/shin and grippy 5'10s! How long do you reckon i'll stay alive for?!?!
    delightfully dangerous!
  • Well Paul (noddyh), where to start.....

The start sounds like a bit of a nightmare. If there is that much carrying, I might seriously think about changing the start of the route so we can do more biking. I suppose as soon as you get out of the Lakes its all downhill ain't it....??

With abit more fitness than last year, I'm sure me and our kid could have made it up Walna Scar, So might try to take that route, but I'll have to look closer on the map to see if we could go that way.

My mate mentioned today that he might come along in his vehicle to help us out with all the gear, which would help greatly.
