OK i'm in for a four week month starting when I wake up on Sunday 11th January.

I've been given antibiotic prescription which I collect tomorrow for a tooth abscess and told that mixing with alcohol (not penicillin or amoxycillin) will make me puke - as it's a five day course I might as well use it as leverage to go the month!

Why Sunday? Because I've got a glass of red next to me now and tomorrow pm I've got an anniversary bash to attend and I will start my meds Sunday am.

So Sunday 11th January (Noon) to Sunday 8th February (Noon) inclusive I am on the wagon.

    Oh alright then...

That's a seriously diet-y diet. It's making me drink wine just thinking about it. I'm going to get some bread.

    Hi Peeps

Anti Candida diet, sounds like some yeast infection.

Anyway, due to a viral infection affecting my inner ear, Im currently having balance/ coordination problems and banned by my GP from riding my bike.

This is a by-product of Manflu contracted prior to Xmas.

To counteract my current malady I have been told to induce dizziness as a sort of physiotherapy.

Can't think of a better way of doing this than getting P@ssed, so count me out for the moment.

When normal service resumes, sometime soon I hope, I may be join in the "fun", or not.

She, (the Doc) suggested head movements, up down, left right, bend over etc, to induce the symptoms as a way of getting your brain used to the sensation.

I dismissed this idea, and thought that the "getting drunk and trying not to fall over" method was much better.

Anyway, I seriously Pee'd off I can't ride my bike.

Am thinking a lot about clementines and herbal teas. Also, what's a newfie?

See my Canadian confusion post. I inserted Newfie for somewhat subtle comedic purposes:

The word 'Newfie' is associated with 'Newfie jokes', typical Canadian ethnic jokes told and retold since the days of the American and Canadian military presence in Newfoundland during World War II. The jokes almost always depict Newfoundlanders as stupid, and lacking in sophistication or intelligence. Many such jokes are identical to ethnic jokes that are used to put down other groups.
Sounds like Welsh jokes. Which used to be Irish jokes.

The Newfies ARE bonkers though. They are like Geordies, except it really IS cold there.

Trying to think when I last had an alcoholic beverage. Suspect it was on a work night out when I was on the bus and someone was going slower than those on rounds and I just couldn't leave a pint of mass produced ale on the table un-drunk, probably March.

Gonna be good tonight as I drunk all the cans in the fridge and only just realised and put the last 4 cans in 1/2 hour ago. Orange squash and Tetleys tea for me tonight :(

  • I just sat down to read the forum updates with a glass of red.

I'm so out... my january mystery case is a goooooood one this time around - it includes 4 bottles of '01 Clarendon Hills Syrah... mmmmm...

And it's my birthday next friday, so no chance. January is not a month for sobriety in my book. February maybe. Not March, I'll be in Australia where sober is a swearword.

yup but amazingly not many pubs. oh if you are nr melbourne at least there are around 10 million velodromes. just in the parks normally. rode my first fixed last autum there a track bike, a real hoot.

Really... interesting! My family are all from a small provincial town between Sydney and Canberra called Goulburn. No velodrome there! I will have a look on the google though - i'm going to buy myself a $100 rubbish roadie from K-Mart to use while I'm there. The road the farm is on is like some mad hill course. Fun!
  • Ok - my name is Greg66 and I'm almost an alcoholic.

I've been sober for three days now. This evening I escaped the demon booze by sleeping on the sofa all evening after an early supper of a cup of tea and 9 After Eights.

This is going to be harder than I thought. Our house is swimming in bottles and cans, and every one of them is looking at me like a puppy at the dogs' home. @rse.

I'm finding the pincer attack of Global Economic Disaster and Screaming baby somewhat stressful and am solving this problem by getting off my tits a lot.

This may not be a good idea.

Yeah, well, you might want to avoid taking a swing or two at screaming Bianchi even if the demon drink is egging you on to do so. I think there are rules about that, even if they're pretty flexible. Accept the advice of an old hand on this one

This is why I never try to give up drinking. Drinking in the week, sure, that's easy. On the weekend, however, my cottage in Essex is just full of wine. Lovely wine.

Tea and after eights just don't cut it.

Gregg, you have appeared to highlighted a double jeopardy scenario ( I expect the litigous of this site to correct me where appropriate)

9 After Eights is just the start - my brother in law once did 9 Twix bars on a 3 hour car journey - he's not a thin man now

When you've done half a box in a night I suggest you get a leave of absence from the SCR panel and get of your t1ts on booze as it will be as bad but eminently more enjoyable

Just a thought..............I've seen what chocolate does to man

After my race today, having that glass of Beaujolais that I refused last night.

Cheers (keep up the good fight - ignore us slobs)

Eating doughnut holes is good, eating doughnuts is bad especially when you can't ride of the doughnuts. On the subject of After 8 mints, there was an empty box of them on the clearance shelf in Morrisons today and yes I did have the same idea as those that emptied the box

I made doughnuts. I have eaten 3 holes and one doughnut. Somebody help me.

Is anyone's maths good enough to determine if the dough to surface area ratio is greater for a torriodal shape or a sphere, or how big the "hole" has to be before it is flavourfully advantageous to go for the doughnut (or "donut" depending on where you are from and the average literacy rates in your area.)
  • Now then, where did I put my Open University beard and coat? Ah, here they are. Cue black and white...

If we take a sphere with a radius Ro and a torus with and outer radius Ro, then the surface area to volume ratio of the sphere will always be lower than that of the torus. The sphere is the most efficient means in nature of packing volume (think of a bubble - there's a reason they're not cuboid or spikey).

    We can prove this mathematically:

The volume of a sphere is 4/3pi(Ro^3). The surface area is 4pi(r^2). The ration of surface area to volume is therefore 3/Ro, or 1:(Ro/3).

The volume of a torus s 2(pi^2)R(r^2), where r is the radius of the cross-section of the ring of the doughnut, and R is the radius of the circle prescribed by the centre of the ring of the doughnut. The surface area is 4(pi^2)Rr, giving a ratio of surface area to volume of 2/r. If we take the fattest doughnut we can, which has virtually no hole, then R = r, and Ro, the radius of the outside edge of the doughnut, = R + r, or 2r. Substituting Ro for r in our ratio give a surface area to volume ratio for the fattest doughnut we can muster of 4/Ro, or 1:(Ro/4).

The second question - how big do we have to make our doughnut before its volume exceeds that of our sphere with radius Ro, is more difficult. There are two variables at work in the doughnut: the size of the ring (R) and the cross section of the ring (r). A hula hoop (not the crisp variety) could have the same volume as a relatively small sphere, for example, because although R is relatively huge, r is relatively tiny. Conversely, our fattest possible doughnut above would only have to increase in Ro by a relatively modest amount get bigger in volume than our Ro-radius sphere. Anything over 2((3pi/2)^1/3), or about 3.35 Ro, should do it.

That was a bit more than I was expecting Sunday morning to involve.
