I got up a 17% one today - the descent was terrifying!!

Hi Linsen - a 17% hill around Southampton?

    which little tinker was that?

I was in Dorset at the weekend, it was the climb outside Abbotsbury along Chesil beach. Similar to Golf Course Road if you know it - but about 50 times longer!

I spent a weekend down there this summer and bored the missus stupid with wistful comments about the lovely roads and the climbs and wish I had my bike etc etc :D

Well worth the trip with a couple of wheels. B3157 (I think) is like a rollercoaster, and virtually empty. Trip over to Portland was fun too, though I didn't quite manage to drag my friend to visit Bill!

Great morning on the bike anyway, topped out at 35.9 mph chasing an SUV along the embankment on the way home, totally forgot about my bro and dropped him silly!

That's shifting some. Were you drafting the SUV?

Nope but had a bit of a tailwind. Actually just looked at the data, the 35.9 was downhill so just the 35 along the embankment!:

Yes the rest was rather slow but I was with my brother who was doing his first ever road ride!

    JB I hate you :)

What software did that graph come from?

Motionbased - data from my Garmin Edge.

Edit - here's a screengrab from motionbased, it's a great bit of software:

I stopped after running 30 miles today, so will try and have a few laps of RP tomorrow morning. However my quads were severly trashed with all the downhill running, so I don't expect I'll be breaking any speed records...

  • I'm on gardening leave this week so have the rare luxury of weekday loafing.

Therefore, with the sun shining, I thought it would be a great opportunity to do the loop of the park for the first time. Wanted to know what all the fuss is about.

Did clockwise first and then anti-clockwise second.

    Times:
    1. 25 mins [which included a couple of minutes stop as my chain came off coming down Sawyers Hill which was annoying]
    2. 21 mins

    Couple of observations:
    1. I think I prefered clockwise though going to have to do some more laps to be sure.
    2. It's a good place to experiment with pushing vs spinning. Like DDD I spend practically all of my time on my big ring but I think that's because I only do a 30 minute (mostly flat) commute. Long story short is that I will make use out of my middle ring more. I learned that lesson in the park the hard way today (pun intended).

I'm up for that provided you're not planning a super early start.

SiHughes sorry to hear about the "garden leave" me too and it sucks

Whether doesn't look great for Sunday. I'm not being a wuss (honestly  ), just have to pick and choose my days around the family, try to choose sunnier days.

On a separate note, Greg66 suggested three weeks/3,400,002 pages back a ride one day in the Surrey Hills. Is anyone up for that this side of Christmas?

I thought it was supposed to be nice this weekend? Temps in double figures?

If it is bad, I may be tempted to drop out too, as I'm doing a long ride there on Saturday, and I may or may not have company on Sunday.

I could be up for a Surrey Hills ride, but I would be lagging behind on the ups, so I don't know how welcome I'd be. And I'm racing on the first two Saturdays in December, and studying for the middle two weekends in November. Apart from that...;)

I'm going by the BBC website, mind! :)

No-one gets left behind. People will go up hills at different speeds, but everyone waits at the top, and no sprinting off the front over the horizon.

Maybe, but I wouldn't want everyone to be stuck waiting for me all day...

Jen - entirely up to you. If you want to get those completely barking races ( :) ) out of the way first and enter the fray in the New Year, no worries. Average speed would be about 17mph I would have thought.

The barking races only get worse in the New Year ;)

I'll see what dates are proposed and then see from there....:)

Hey ITB, actually my gardening leave is self-imposed so no need to feel sorry at all.

Would be fun, I'd hold you up on the ups, the downs the flats... you name it!

As long as you're patient... :D

I'd be up for a Surrey Hills ride, I'll need a long lead in time to allow sufficient negotiation space with the Domestic CEO....

Am up for a Surrey Hills ride but I'm well aware my slow 34/27 spinning on even gentle inclines will leave me miles behind the Jonginges of this world. It'd be good if we can find a sunny day for it - cold isn't too bad but doing it in the wind and rain would suck enormous balls.

NB my avatar photo is me immediately after my only Surrey Hills ride. It really is hard work.

You flatter me sir. I'm only an average climber*, who has the occasional good day.

    Anyhoo...
Can't do this weekend but a Surrey hills ride sounds good :)
