Got woken up on Brookmill Rd this morning by a fast roadie whizzing by, gave chase (albeit relatively calmly, not eyeballs popping an inch from his back wheel stylee) from there along most of Q1 and picked up a couple of cups for my efforts. Not sure Q1 segments are the most keenly contested but hey I'll take it.

Must remember that I might spot you down there...
What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

Nearly 3 weeks of indolence & gluttony, plus a 20 mile walk yesterday, meant my return to cycle commuting was a little painful. Let's see how long it takes to return to a reasonable level of fitness.
This, but without the silly walk.
  • Recently discovered the best Q1 segment, from Deptford High St to the next set of lights which is 2.5 miles away at the junction of Lynton Rd/Dunton Rd. Have been missing it all this time because I enter Q1 via Hamilton St from the high st, but to hit the start of this segment you have to turn onto Edward St from the hight st, by the White Hart.

Gave it a decent effort this morning, was 1 second off the KOM. Slightly irksome.

Racing at the weekend so pootling this morning.

Overtaken by multitudes while trying to stay under 180 watts. Dark hill and any traffic lights are tedious in these conditions.

Dark Hill at under 180 watts would take me about 5 minutes at my current weight

Quiet out there isn't it? I'm not even getting any abuse from enraged drivers lately. I guess September will be around soon.

In other research news, am about to find out what happens if you go riding in the Pyrenees when pretty much your only training is a daily commute. My (vaguely) planned solo 150km day including the Tourmalet feels a bit ambitious now.

Something approaching a "race" up Southwark bridge this morning with a chap in a pink jersey and a decent trackstand who could get up speed rapidly. Had just enough legs to overhaul him, but proper fitness has not returned after the three weeks off the bike due to holiday and shower closure at work.

Bike is creaking from somewhere on the first 3 or 4 pedal strokes away from standstill. Re-lubed and re-indexed at the weekend, so not that.

Back and into the quiet, the legs have held up ok despite too much cheese and only a pootle on a hire bike towing kids.

Similar creaking, I thought it could be spokes but may be cassette/freewheel.

    You'll be fine.
I did seven days in the Pyrenees last month with just the commute and a couple of 40milers in the legs. Regular commuting is amazing \o/

But, yeah, a 150km day will be tiring nonetheless. Enjoy it. What other climbs are you tackling?

Vague plan (?) is Luz Ardiden, Tourmalet, Aspin, Hourqette, Troumousse, Gavarnie, Route des Lacs. Over 4 days, all weather permitting though.

Did you consider Port de Bales? We did that when I did the Pyrenees and it was stunning.

I'm basing myself close to Luz, otherwise I would. I've ridden it from Luscan and down into Luchon - very pretty climb.

First chilly morning of autumn this morning meant I dug out the arm warmers for the first time in a while. Lovely tailwind and minimal choppers made for a good ride. My timing was spot on too as I got greens from Clapham South all the way to E&C.

Great temperature out there. A nice quickish ride with only a few choppers out there. I did rather sternly tell a lady how to shoulder check after she almost bundled me into traffic which I think I was a bit harsh about.

Top marks to the lady who explained to me last night after she cut me up on a roundabout that she had seen me. I didn't hang about to hear her batsh1t justification as to why she therefore thought pulling out on me was a nice thing to do.

Ah yes - I've had that before as well. Twice in fact - and both times at roundabouts. You start shouting at someone who's nearly killed you and they wind their window down and the first thing out of their filthy f*cking sewer is: "I did see you, right..."

At that point I've had to ride away without further discussion. because the alternative would have been reaching into their car for thirty seconds of furiously smashing their f*king head repeatedly against their steering wheel, followed by a long prison sentence.

Nearly got taken out by an overtaking cyclist on the South Lambeth Rd last night. He certainly looked like he should have known better - nice bike, all the gear, fairly mature age. He went mental at my expression of surprise (it was little more than an "Oh") and then proceeded to moan about my earbuds. He then went through 3 reds and turned left down Bedord Road. Not sure why it bugged me so much but I wanted to rip his head off.

I know. To be honest they weren't even on. And when they are it's R4 very quietly. He looked the part - not just flash - but as if he'd been riding for a while so maybe that's the reason he got under my skin

Having gone down from 5 days cycle commuting to 1 day (owing to 4 days being spent in Dublin), my fitness has dropped off a cliff. My scalp is for the taking on Fridays.....

The sooner I procure a bike here in Dublin the better. The second hand market for decent bikes here appears to be non existent though.
