Yikes. Guess that means I don't need to be so worried about squirrels darting out any more then (aside from the bloody mess and moral stand point)

Tree rats. I happily shoot the ones in my garden. Grey ones anyway. Probably comes from growing up in Northumberland where we still have reds.

an MTB mate with discs had something similar happen although unfortunately instead of being chopped in half and left either side of the trail the squirrel was stuck in between the spokes and butted up against the front caliper.

There's a picture on the web somewhere although I don't particularly feel like searching for or viewing it again as it was pretty gross.

I've not commuted for over a week as my ultra-busy summer's cycling has finally caught up with me and I just needed a break

I've heard that squirrels are small enough not to stop a wheel turning, unless the rider is a small child I guess. Rabbits however are big enough, once met a girl that went OTB and broke 4 ribs due to a rabbit in her front wheel descending Broomfield.

this is Ted my workmate, in RP over a year ago. He's still not fully recovered from the broken shoulder he sustained. Shoulda had proper lights I guess.

    Ooof. Poor Ted.
  • Top vid, hope Ted was ok.

when I killed that Squirrel there was no blood, I am guessing he was just snapped in half, enough to make anyone go.

    Hope everyone enjoys the rain...

    SH*THOUSE!

Bet the deer just ambled away without even a bruise - and yeah, those lights for RP in winter were a very, very poor idea. Hope the guy's OK now

I sliced a squirrel in half on our club chainy last year. I was second wheel following the rider about to pull off when I heard a 'crunch' noise. Just assumed I'd hit a pothole and shouted out "Call it!" in frustration, only to get laughed at by the rider behind who told me he'd seen a squirrel go into my back wheel and split into two bits

...this is pretty much what I did to the poor little thing, front wheel straight over its middle. Barely registered as a bump for me but no chance for it...

    I'm no squirrel murderer.

Must have been a huge tail wind this morning, barely turned the pedals.

Managed to dodge the rain again this morning. Lots of fairies about this morning regardless of the tailwind. I refused to engage because I was enjoying cruising in and in no rush to get to work or end up under a bus.
  • Fairy in the form of my other half this morning meant a nice easy pootle to start the week. Also took it easy because I'm currently in trainers due to a suspected fox taking one of my commuting spd's, pi$$ing on it and leaving it at the end of the garden. 40C wash didn't do the job... will try 50C tonight.

Don't suppose anyone has any experience of how best to get rid of the smell?

Also, I too have not sliced a squirrel in half. Technically I punched a pheasant once on a motorbike, it flew across my path and (luckily) hit my clutch hand. I shat myself, he lost a few feathers but kept going

I'd be interested in that too. A vixen decided to make my shed her den and brought up 4 cubs in there. Lots of stuff is covered in fox pee now.

I've hit one on a canal towpath. He did 1.5 - 2 full revolutions of my front wheel before I could stop, I assumed he'd be dead. Nope he ran straight off, hardy little squirrel.

Fun ride in this morning, thanks to holiday traffic and tailwind. Garmin recorded an AP of ~250W, which is consistent with the speed achieved (and what the legs were actually doing), but a NP of 760W. How does that actually happen? What does it think I was doing?!?

You can get sprays that are supposed to get rid of the smell of cat piss from carpet, I think they're supposed to have enzymes in that breaks it down or something, you can also get carpet shampoo that is supposed to do the same - I'm sure you could get it from a pet shop.
Having used it on carpet, I wouldn't say it was 100% effective (i ended up binning the carpet) but then it's pretty difficult to get the carpet properly clean before using it. At least the shoes should be pretty clean after going through the wash.

I've had a really great but busy cycling summer culminating with the Dunwich Dynamo, a week in the alps following Le tour and RL100 in close proximity and frankly I was all cycled out. Not physically but mentally.

So I hadn't touched any bike since I put my 'best' ride back in the garage on the afternoon following RL100 16 days ago.

I finally felt the urge again this morning and so was back on the commute. Nothing particular of note just that I really enjoyed it.

  • Was on lead-out duty for Mrs Idris this morning as she fancied a go at a QOM in Hyde Park

28 QOMs later, and not once did she put her nose in the wind

  • Nice ride in but what a load of choppers on bikes, a steady stream on RLJ'ers at one point.

Did my first full week in ages last week, sadly WFH yesterday means it won't be two in a row.

I nearly had a head on collision with some donkey riding on the wrong side of the road as i turned into Rocks Lane from the Upper Richmond road this morning, he obviously decided to bypass the lights by taking the opposite pavement but he hadn't made it before I came around the corner at a decent pace having actually got a green light for once.

In other research news, am about to find out what happens if you go riding in the Pyrenees when pretty much your only training is a daily commute. My (vaguely) planned solo 150km day including the Tourmalet feels a bit ambitious now.
    You'll be fine.
I did seven days in the Pyrenees last month with just the commute and a couple of 40milers in the legs. Regular commuting is amazing \o/

But, yeah, a 150km day will be tiring nonetheless. Enjoy it. What other climbs are you tackling?

Spot on, my endurance wasn't great but took it steady. Started to feel vaguely trained on the last day. 72 hours from arriving to leaving, did Luz ardiden, tourmalet, aspin, hourquette d'anzican, croix blanche, cirque de Troumouse and lac des gloriettes, borderes, soulor and aubisque.
  • Probably going to need lights for the first time since March tomorrow morning at 0600ish. :(

My memory really is awful these days, I don't remember sunrise being 0600ish last year!
