Having completed my first month back on a bike and into the daily commute I thought I'd share a few thoughts with those would-be commuters waiting to take the plunge
Taking on a bike is like taking on a new pet - you think its just for the ride home but sooner or later you find yourself tinkering or cleaning or adjusting something and it begins to take over your life - I'm thinking of getting mine an electric blanket for those chill evening in the hall
Work through the pain - your new saddle and your bum will eventually adjust to each other - on a personal note NEVER ride wearing a thong.
Be assertive when you're riding - you are traffic just as much as white van man - if he doesn't like it he can do the other thing
Above all its a brilliant way to get about - night riding to fetch Mrs JW I've seen deer in the middle of town, and on a good day just cycling to work puts me in a good mood
I thank you :oops:0 -

Oh, by the way, SCALP!
Trundling alongside the promenade in Llandudno (almost at work) I saw a hybrid-ish bike with panniers ambling along on the promenade itself. I charitably assumed that the rider was unaware of the Victorian town bylaw that prohibits bicycles from the prom, but the fact that he had a far clearer route than I did on the road meant that I had to qualms about the 'pavement passes' rule. Avanti...
I upped my pace slightly just to be sure of passing him in time (just from 12 to 16mph), and passed him without any strain, visible or hidden. I followed the prom to the end (I'd normally turn off) to be honourable enough to give him the chance to redeem himself, but at the end of the road he was nowhere to be seen.
That makes three on the mantlepiece now, see: :!: :!: :!:0 -
I was soooo close to getting the top scalps going last night whilst waiting for the 0630 to BTM when riding in the Paddington area. Approaching a set of lights I saw a scooter ahead and the lights changed to green and went for it to scalp the scooter but the blighter turned off just as I got close A scooter scalp would have made up for the 7 hour wait.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Do supercars feature in FCN? Scalped a Lambo on Marlybone Road at 2am albeit in traffic where 3 lanes merge into one. Its a Lambo and I want the scalpI've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Definately claim the Lambo - SCR is about cunning as well as brute speed - FCN -100?

This thread has gone very TMTT (too much terry thomas)...
I know you're all just paying homage to the great man that is Greg T - Mr SCR 2008, but it's confusing me!
No scalps to report today, did have a duel with some prat on an MTB in shorts (his legs must have been cold) who RLJ'd constantly, then RLJ'd on the pavement! FFS.
What a lovely day though. I heart cycling.0 -

You cannot have too much Terry Thomas, Princess.
Sorry slipped into character there.
It will not be long until everyone's avatar is TT and we can get down to the serious business of discussing Martini bars, cravat designs, tweed and debutante deflowering.
Especially debutante deflowering.Fixed gear for wet weather / hairy roadie for posing in the sun.

Usual morning but surprisingly more cyclist out than normal, perhaps it was because I left my house a mere five minutes earlier, perhaps those in cycling-hibernation have, like me, realised that winter is indeed over.
Wimbledon produced its usual breeds of cyclist; hybrid man, rapid hybrid man, slick tyre mountain bike man, front suspension with lock-out etc the list goes on. I scalped them all.
Well… there was one chap on a (red-orange) Kona with slicked tyres and his front suspension locked. He put up an honest challenge, I dropped him every chance I got, he took me every time we got stuck in traffic and had to filter.
This endless waltz with the Kona would continue all the way to the ‘Tooting bec – Balham train/tube station’ drag strip, aka ‘my road’.
It is now, at this part of my journey, that we arrive to two things I’ve said previously:To own a road is to know that you are the single most fastest cyclist on that road during your commute.
AND
A true scalp isn’t just overtaking your opponent, its beating and leaving your opponent at the lights. While you, who have clearly beaten the light pound the open air ahead.
The lights are red, I line up to the Kona, I focus on nothing but the future; the point in time at which I beat the lights and pound the open road ahead. The Kona is nothing to me. There is only the now and my goal. Getting to my goal is just the process of time an inevitable eventuality that has already determined that I’ve scalped the Kona.
The lights are still red. A girl pootles up on a red B-twin roadie. I calculate a quick FCN: rucksack, cycle clothing, helmet, toe clips. She’s lower than me.
Green, I’ve thought to much, the Kona is ahead, one second later and I’ve served Universal consonance I’m ahead of the Kona. I glance back, the girl is still behind me. I spin a little hard and change gear, 18-19-20-21mph, I look back and she’s still there. The lights ahead are still green we both go through.
At this point I so very badly want to tell you that I moved my right thumb and rested on ‘The button of ultimate doom’ (my back mech shifter). I want to write that I left a strip of awesome so deep in the road, they’re gonna have to fix the tarmac. None of that happened.
The simple truth? Something disastrous happened to me today. I peddled my little heart out, my thighs spun as hard as they could, I looked over to my right and the girl with a cadence twice as slow as mine overtook me.
I was scalped by a girl
She didn’t overtake me with speed, her peddle stroke wasn’t a blur. It was simple power, plan unquestioned absolute power and blistering stamina. She did not falter.
I gave chase, but with my soul destroyed, it was as futile as trying to strangle myself (try it instinctively you can’t do it).
I got to the lights, they went red. I stopped. The girl? Who had clearly beaten the lights, was pounding the open ahead.
She now owns my road.
Excelsior!Food Chain number = 4
A true scalp is not only overtaking someone but leaving them stopped at a set of lights. As you, who have clearly beaten the lights, pummels nothing but the open air ahead. ~ 'DondaddyD'. Player of the Unspoken Game0 -
Did you know SCRing is also a good spectator sport?
In the mornings before work I walk the dog on little bit of green by the Clapham road between Oval and Stockwell. There are zillions of cyclists zooming along on that road and I always have a gander at them. The look on the faces of the ones clearly playing The Game when they get overtaken is priceless, you can see them clocking their overtaker and mentally calculating how many FCN points they are worth...0 -

Condolences on the loss of your scalp this morning DDD.
A very sad tale indeed for a Monday morning.
You have the rest of the week to redeem yourself. Suggest you lay in wait for her tomorrow morning at the same place.
