  • Bought a Victorian place down South. Anticipated a little extra work, time required and expense needed due to the age but really struggled through the last week.

Every single screw that I have found has had the head completely stripped, whoever artexed the house has done it on top of paper so the plasters can't just skim over the top (worried the water will pull the paper off) and the whole house has been pained in cream, shiny silk paint which makes it look like it was inhabited by smokers. Every job is taking me three times as long as planned.

Think the weeks of work I had planned will stretch into months!

I had similar issues with my 50s flat I bought 18 months ago. Every screw head is srtipped, rusted, stuck and every bit of work the previous owners did was a bodge-job meaning I uncover all manner of dumbfuckery and every job I do ends up costing me twice as much and taking twice as long.

Also, this morning's commute was my first time on the bike after a month of eating, drinking and entertaining customers in Burgundy. I'm several kilos heavier, had a rucksack full of laptop/food/clothes on my back and it was into a 15mph headwind. Hard bloody work. And my spoke magnet wouldn't align itself with the sensor, meaning half the journey wasn't recorded.
  • I have had issues with my sensor as well recently.

I changed the batteries and fiddled around with it, but no luck.

I even placed one of those super strength magnets on the original magnet to see if that made a difference, it did for a while then stopped working.

At the moment, touch wood, it seems to be working, but for how long......

(I have it in conjunction with my Garmin, I let that run all the time and use the Garmin for "proper" runs.

Continental inner tube valve cores can FRO. Seriously, redesign the bloody things!

So read this last night and thought, yep I agree very annoying... this morning switch bikes and think the tyres look a bit soggy. Naturally both valves come out, making me 10 mins late whilst I hunt for some grips. grrrr

Lately (last few months) I’ve been having issues with my Titanium (winter) bike. Excessive movement in the BB area, spontaneous chain-dropping off the big ring to the outside when in 52x12 and high torque, and gradually-increasing creaking and cracking noises coming from that area too. Despite lots of inspections, I haven’t been able to visually find any obvious cause. A few weeks ago I replaced the BB bearings anyway, as after about 13,000 miles there was a little bit of play. I thought perhaps it was loose chainring bolts, and since some were nearly rounded off inside I replaced those too. Chain-suck-jam has occasionally caused bent teeth and big ring and since it’s a compact chainset I replaced the chainring recently too. All to no avail: still just as much play, chain-dropping and noise. The noise has got really bad recently, causing me much embarrassment whenever I need to put serious power down, on Friday I crunched my way up the little hill in Richmond past the dentist to escape a couple of hangers-on.
Then, finally, this morning, I stood on the pedals when lights went green in Kingston, and CRAAAACK! I looked down, I’m still on the bike and there’s nothing obvious wrong, except that there’s now LOTS of side-to-side chain play across the FD cage. So I got off, up-ended the bike to have a closer look, and there it was: a shattered bottom bracket shell. Cracked all along the welds, across the shell and a curling 1-inch tongue of downtube had peeled away for good measure.
I guessed it was just about rideable but only on very low torque, so I soft-soft-soft-pedalled the rest of the way to work (135W and I still had fairies!!).
    grrrrrr.

Yikes! Sorry to hear that! The frame clearly can't cope with the amount of power you put down on a regular basis. Is the frame under warranty?

Ever caught yourself in the mirror wearing just leg warmers? Not an easy look to carry off....
Caught myself just wearing a HRM a couple of weeks back. Leg warmers look like sartorial elegance compared to that :)

2 years for their normal frames, 5 years for the Ti ones, apparently, though I haven't checked yet. I got it in Nov 2012 as frame-only, so it's done probably 18,000 miles. I'll give them a call later to see what the story is.

Now you come to mention it, I think that is around the time the problems started!

    Thanks for the tip off.

Two cycle related head injuries today and I wasn't wearing a helmet when one of them happened. Walking through my flat just before I leave for work with the straps on my bib shorts off my shoulders. Paid a visit to the bathroom and left then whacked myself on the back of the head with the bathroom door when on of the straps caught the door handle. On the way to work, wearing my helmet and I punched myself in the face when putting my arm warmers on and my hand slipped off them.

To the lady indicating left in the left hand lane of a 2 lane road entering the roundabout today, then accelerated hard and proceeded to turn right all the way around the roundabout, with left indicator still on, WTF do you expect?
A: you completely missed that you had cut up the car in the right hand lane that was turning right!
B: Yes, you had to slam on the brakes.

I didn't in the end. I took photos before unboxing etc in the event that the rims were damaged. In the end (but no thanks to the courier) they were fine. Might save the pics for them next time I have a large parcel delivered and ask Wiggle for an upgraded delivery for free or something...

I know they've been mentioned many times, but: Addison Lee.

Being on an MTB, my elbows stick out a bit, perfect target for an AL wing mirror...in lane 3 of 5 round Hyde Park Corner...at 20+mph...must only have been a nudge, as only a bit of a wobble. Cockwomble is too kind a word.

In that sort of traffic at that speed, I normally sit proud in the middle-ish of the lane. This time I was flush on the line, so I guess he thought he'd squeeze past - lesson learnt.

Allez man, rides like a chopper.

Decides on his own accord to stop all traffic to let an oncoming left turning van go down a drive. I carry on since I have plenty speed to make the gap safely and ultimately, he's not the right of way arbiter.

He makes some effort to catch up, attempts a pass up the inside between me an the curb to remonstrate about my "poor road etiquette".

Encountered the same chap on the same stretch of road.

This time after swearing at me for slowing to avoid going into the back of a moped he decided to try and squeeze past me (on the right, he learned...) between me and a bin lorry. I'd slowed down because there wasn't all that much room between me and the lorry long before this chap turned up.

Ultimately I just slowed and left him to his chopper ways. I left him just as he was left hooking a rider going up onto Blackfriars.

Is it too much to expect reasonable forecasts for an hour or so out? Kitted up like a scuba diver early this am (only looked a bit drizzly, but xcweather was calling for 2.5mm when I checked it at 0630), naturally boiled in the bag with nary a drop. Second time this week.
