Check rain-alarm.com (or app on your phone) before departing ...

Forecast for here was heavy rain from 7am - it was dry at 8am when I left and only a couple of spots by 830 when I got to work.
  • I was filtering down the middle of the road this morning on Sheen Lane, which is a narrow, hectic little road that crosses the rail line at Mortlake Station, and often has traffic queuing for the level crossing.
As I got towards the front the crossing went up so some traffic started to come towards me so I looked left to cut in, and as I did so came face to face with a dog.
Whose head was poking out of a car's rear driver side window. It was a cute little thing and quite calm, but it did make me think, what a daft way that would be to get severely injured: startled into oncoming traffic by a dog that barks out of a car window at you...

    Or savaged by a pitbull!
Try putting that on the sick form at work!
  • Rear shifter cable has snapped. Luckily I was already home from my 18 mile commute otherwise that'd have been a pain!
I was trying to sort out indexing, and it snapped. No wonder my gears were shifting horribly on the way home

I'm away this weekend, so no chance to sort it out for at least a week! Grrr

  • have plenty speed to make the gap safely and ultimately, he's not the right of way arbiter.

he decided to try and squeeze past me (on the right, he learned...) between me and a bin lorry. I'd slowed down because there wasn't all that much room between me and the lorry long before this chap turned up.

Must've read your post and learned from you it's every man for himself for safety/right-of-way :)

    Guess so.

Shame we were both doing 20mph when he did it ;)
  • Allez man, rides like a chopper.

Decides on his own accord to stop all traffic to let an oncoming left turning van go down a drive. I carry on since I have plenty speed to make the gap safely and ultimately, he's not the right of way arbiter.

He makes some effort to catch up, attempts a pass up the inside between me an the curb to remonstrate about my "poor road etiquette".

Encountered the same chap on the same stretch of road.

This time after swearing at me for slowing to avoid going into the back of a moped he decided to try and squeeze past me (on the right, he learned...) between me and a bin lorry. I'd slowed down because there wasn't all that much room between me and the lorry long before this chap turned up.

Ultimately I just slowed and left him to his chopper ways. I left him just as he was left hooking a rider going up onto Blackfriars.

Sounds like he's been taking lessons from Hairy-Legs Hi-Viz Harry aka the Hammersmith Nutjob

Resorted to a long sleeve jersey today, should have dug out the kneewarmers too. Was a bit cold on the bare legs when I set off but after the first 2 miles I was OK.

whilst I respect your decision Mr Cyclist to choose to cycle along an unlit NSL single carriageway road in the dark, dressed head to toe in yellow but non reflective garb, if I happen to be the person driving in the car behind you, Ill make the decisions when its safe for me to overtake you, not you.

had I followed your helpful advice and overtaken in that sequence of blind bends,Id have found myself head on facing an oncoming ambulance who was travelling at some speed. though Im sure theyd have let me off that crash had I said but the cyclist waved me past...thats why its safer to only overtake when you can actually see whats coming towards you.

The cycling gods had it in for me today:
Puncture on PX that I only found 10 mins before I left for work and was already running late meant a quick swap to the Forme. Cause of the low temperatures I wimped out out and wore my Gore jacket but nearly decided against it as the zip wasn't playing ball, 7 months of not using it has left a little corrosion on the zip.

I'm at the end of my ride in this morning, waiting at the ped crossing at the end of Great Tower Street to cross Byward St/Lower Thames St to get to the office. No traffic from the right so I cross halfway with 3 peds & wait patiently for the lights to change & allow us to cross safely (there's a mahoosive refuge in the middle given all the roadworks at the moment). Whilst waiting, a tipper truck driver who is crawling past on Lower Thames St & blocking the ped crossing the other side, leans out of his window and has a go at me : "shouldn't ride through a F*cking red light you *&!£" ..... ?

Thanks for the tip you Daily Mail reading bell end. I'll remember that the next time I'm also waiting at a red light.

On the plus side I reckon Lawd Shugga was still stuck there this morning: http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest-news/lord-sugars-verdict-on-cycleways-boris-needs-a-whack-201053

  • It would seem a left chop, stop and park move is legit at the apex of the Stockwell segregated bike path judging by this mornings experience. Yes there may have been some rozzers on the way through but seriously there is 200m of bus lane to safely pull up in just ahead

Ordered a replacement monitor power supply board via AliExpress a few weeks ago. Not available anywhere else, so it's either that or chuck the monitor. Package arrives, containing the wrong board.
Went back to the vendor, says sorry, but won't give me a full refund because they're still out of pocket.
Raised a dispute with AliExpress, who acknowledge that I received the wrong item. Apparently my options are either a 40% refund and keep the board (which I have no use for) or take a full refund and ship the board back to China at my own expense.

Funnily enough, shipping the thing back to China, even without tracking (which I'd clearly need if I want to see any refund at all) will cost me 60% of what I originally paid.

The amount of money involved isn't huge, but I'm disappointed there's no way to get a full refund; will make me think twice before using AliExpress to purchase anything more valuable...

Did you pay by credit/debit card? You can always ask for a chargeback on the basis that the goods are incorrect, the trader is refusing to issue a full refund. http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/problem/how-do-i-use-chargeback

Brilliant, why didn't I think of that? Yep, I paid with a credit card, and a quick bit of research indicates that AliExpress will honour legitimate chargeback requests. Many thanks!

If you get a chargeback you then just need to store the goods safely, and let the trader arrange for collection of them at their expense. As long as you keep them safe, and allow them to arrange collection (or they offer to pay for postage) that's all you need to do. It's not your responsibility to pay for the return of the incorrect shipped goods.

  • Reversed into by a car doing a pretty awful 3-point-turn. Fortunately I was in my own car (parked up) at the time. Rear panel dented. Other driver seemed to be in more of a hurry to get to work and would only give me her number and forename and no further details. Despite a huge line of traffic no-one stopped to offer being 'witness'.

  • Who would order road bike shifter cables, and mountain bike brake cables in one set!?!?!?!?
Well that's what I've just been sent. I only ordered the brake cables to be on the safe side as my shifter cables had just snapped, so I thought I'd replace all in one go. But not anymore as apparently mountian bike brake cables come with road shifters in one set (not my fault, I went through the website selecting "cables", "Road", "gears", "inners" and it came up with this set)

Fitted a brand new 9 speed campag xenon rear mech to my winter commuter at the weekend. Rode it in for the first time today and the bloody thing snapped!

I wasn't even changing gear at the time. Lucky I didn't come off because it went into the wheel and jammed. Luckily it was at fairly low speed.

    Probably...

It's part of the job, but I'm having to repeat this particular exercise and go right back to basics - all agreed with operational staff, but the IM bods have realised we're serious and are trying to blow the project out of the water. I'm part of an external software consultancy that has delivered solutions that work to this client, compared to the internal BI guys who have no clue, but have a lot of political weight. Hence the need for back to basics documentation. Yawn...

Can you buy shifters without calipers? I might be interested in your shifters if so, I reckon I can use my current calipers as the Parabox uses mineral oil.

Generally they come together. Buying the front and rear derailleur, battery mount, cables seem to end up at pretty much the price of the whole group.

Hardly surprising. What kind of fool would want shifters, mechs and no calipers? I'm just being tight. I'd like to go full hydraulic as I'm always thinking the Parabox is a bit of a lash up and full hydraulics would be better.
