  • I spent two weeks in Finland for work in July.
Now that is a country that I like.
    A lot.
Half the population of London in an area bigger than Britain.
    Wonderful roads.
    Wonderful attitude towards cycling.
Lots of areas to explore, all be it with a similar theme.
I'll not mention the darkness in Winter.
I'm half Finnish, I LOVE the country. We as children spent 6-8 weeks there every summer until the age of around 12. I even love the winter, never having lost the sense of wonder at 2 metres of snow everywhere. Especially from middle-Finland northwards it's often not really truly dark in winter, as everything is white and reflective, and the sun is never actually very far over the horizon. Magical to me, though I've not had to live through a whole winter there. Funnily enough, early Spring is worst because as the snow melts, everything goes brown. And the mosquitoes can be bad.

Don't they have a problem with Trolls in Northern Finland? I'm sure I saw a documentary about it a few years ago - someone from the government hunting them. Can't remember what it was called though....

Yes I saw that film, "Troll Hunter", very good, actually. Mockumentary. But it was Norway, not Finland :)

So I'm half way over Southwalk Bridge and I start to get serious chain slip. Look down to see the chain rings moving side to side as I pedal. BB issue? Nope, that'll be the frame cracked almost all the way through the down tube, just up from the BB. I reckon the crack went around 270 degrees, hate to think how it would have felt if the bike had folded...

A week of train commuting awaits while Trek decide what to do. Curses. Why can't this happen in the dead of winter, rather than in the last few weeks of nice weather. Wouldn't miss cycling quite so much when it's hail stoning in January.
Best case, a credit note that I can add to with a cycle to work scheme voucher and sort out a nice road bike (probably restricted to Trek, but that's only fair I suppose).
Worst case, they gimme a new frame.

Likely case is that they replace it with a new 7.3 FX, so a brand new hybrid is likely to be going fairly cheap if I can't persuade them to let me upgrade.

P word season. I've had an excess in the last month - I've given up on the Rubino Pro-Tecs. My new commute is evidently too flinty for them.

Any recommendations? Preferably 700x28, light enough that I can take them on the club run but heavy enough that they reject sharp stones....

I was inclined to try durano pluses in 700x28 until I found out that means wired only, no folders :-(

Do I go 700x25 durano plus folder or something else? Have tried Gatorskins/hardshells and found them too slippy in the past.

D+ 25C are quite big. Nice and cushy. Just get those.

Durano Plus have very a soft and thick outer rubber layer in addition to the pretective layer, and I have found them superb for grip and for penetration-prevention. My experience of them during the summer months however has unsurprisingly found that the soft rubber wears away very quickly in the dry and high temperatures, leaving them exposed. I am going to continue using them, but only from October to March. Outside those months I'll be using Schwalbe Ultremo DDs instead. The other key thing is to hunt for and pick out embedded shards before and after wet rides, as it's water-lubrication that generally allows the shards to work their way through.

Don't see the need for Durano Plus - I get on fine with Durano or Durano S all year round.

I already use Durano's on my other bike, my hope was/is that the pluses would do better on the wet weather bike. I have had the odd stone get through the durano's so I'm not convinced they're a solution to the problems i've been experiencing.

Might try the pro4 endurance tyres I suppose - they aren't cheap though.

I used to use Pro4 Endurance, and had so many penetrations I switched from them to the Duranos

  • Just got an email from the missus asking if I minded if she went 'to some rugby thing or other at Twickenham tonight' as she'd been invited by a company she works with. Unfortunately the reply of 'no, give me the ticket instead' didn't wash.

You can watch it in the pub, get hammered, dodgy kebab on the way home, yet still maintain the moral high ground cos she never thought to wangle you a "plus partner" ticket

Night on the town followed by a lap dancing bar then onto something a bit more frisky, sounds in order.

Oh and not the kebab think of your training/body

  • Given what I've been eating recently (just got back from a two week vacation), a kebab's probably an improvement. 7kgs over my weight this time last year

Adverts on sites like this. Look like they are links to interesting stories, but I know if I click on one it will be ten pages of advert surrounded crap.

And more annoyingly, the way the pages on this site load on a phone.

Seems to just load the ad at the top of the page a fraction of a second before I click on a link, meaning the page suddenly jumps to accommodate the advert and I hit the wrong link.

Oh well, iOS has a blocker now...

The minicab driver who deliberately swerved (thank heavens for disc brakes) at me cos I had the audacity to overtake another cyclist - I was close enough to him to hear the passenger asking "what the hell are you doing?"

Maybe a head-cam is a good idea - but then I would probably still be in Forest Gate explaining myself to the old bill.

Good to hear his fare said something, hopefully he will complain to the cab firm.
