  • After being swiped yesterday and reporting it to the police I decided to do a bit of digging myself.

Sat in wait (in the car) for him to come past, I was hoping he would take the same route at the same time, and he did!
Followed him to where he worked, found out his name (where he signed in) and politely asked for him.

When he arrived I, again politely, pointed out who I was, reminded him of the incident yesterday, let him know that I now his car, name, face and where he works.

As I took a picture of him I waved cheerfully and left him there, visibly shaken.

Details have been passed to the police, along with the way in which I obtained the information.

However, if the bloke now thinks I'm going to come after him myself, well that can't be helped, it's not true, but I think his mind will be a bit more focused when it comes to cyclists in the future

It's not often I have to wring out everything including bibs, jersey, gloves and socks after a ride, but I've had to do that 3 times in the last 3 days, including this morning. So much for the "dry until 0800 then light rain" forecast from the Met Office. It was deluge around 0715.

I know the feeling. When I set off, it was dry, so I didn't bother with overshoes. 15 minutes in, and the heavens opened. Currently have my shoes and gloves drying on the computer fans under my desk, with my kit in the 'drying room' at work (which is simply a box room, which has no extra heating or air conditioning to help things dry)

Took out my seatpost to empty the water that seems to collect in the BB area and probably a good 100-200ml poured out onto the floor. I think it's spray from my rear wheel that gets in via the seatpost clamp bit. Need to buy one of those Fizik rubber thingies to see if that helps. It's done it ever since I've had the bike and there don't seem to be any drain holes, unscrewing the cable guide holder doesn't do anything either. It's a sealed cartridge BB so don't think it can do any harm, and there's no grinding or anything after a year of riding in all conditions.

Anyone had similar experiences? My bike's a Cube Agree.

Yes I used to get it with my current Titanium Dolan, until I drilled a hole in the BB shell just next to the plastic cable-guide. And with my alu Lemond before that, which collected lots of water. I've also had wheel-rims collect significant water from particularly deep puddles.

  • That's the solution i've read when searching online, but I don't fancy drilling carbon! I'll just have to keep emptying it after wet rides I guess. Problem is that there's always a small amount that's still there despite my best efforts at shaking and tilting the bike to get it out. I can hear it sloshing about. It must be adding a bit of weight to the bike as well, which is the most annoying thing.

Sure, but you can probably cut down on water bottles to offset that.

I had the same when the Thames flooded 2 winters ago after a ride that included abandoning a flooded road after getting almost hub-deep. I tilted shook and inverted the bike and could plainly hear the water, yet there seemed to be none in the frame. Turned out it was in the rims - try checking those too

Use an old section of innertube.
Stretch it over the post/clamp/seat tube.

Keep it on there over the winter and take it off in the summer.

It does not look nice, but keeps it dry.

Spraying GT85 or even rolling new engine oil into the inside of the bike tubes can help keep in corrosion free.
Just clean and respray/roll occasionally to drive out debris etc.

I find that my bike doubles as a handy clothes drying stand - in the corridor next to the office. Only problem is that now we've got to Thursday, things are starting to hum a bit. Come tomorrow, if it rains again, I'm going to have a revolution on my hands.

    Thank you.

It was a rare moment when the stars aligned.

The traffic was light, meaning I stood a better chance.

    Highly commendable.

However, he probably doesn't work there as his primary location, if he had to sign in? What do you reckon?

  • You have a good point about the having to sign in.

However, everybody who went in, signed in.
We have a similar policy where we are, all agency staff have to sign in, even if they are on long term contracts.

Hopefully it is the impact of what I did, i.e. found him and let him know I had found him, will be enough to put the wind up him.

Realistically I know nothing will be done. If the police actually do speak to him all he has to say is "not me guv" and that's it. He doesn't have to prove he didn't do it, I have to prove he did. And I can't.
Therefore the whole thing goes away.

Letting him know that I know who he is, well that's my way of trying to make sure he takes a bit more care in future. Not only around me, but around every cyclist he passes.

To the dreadlocked gent who tried to get run over by me this morning....

Firstly you need to look right when crossing the road. Well, preferably both ways but definitely right, otherwise you won't even get the chance to look the other way. Probably best not to walk out looking at the traffic that has just passed and continuing to do this as you cross.

Secondly, take your f**king stupid massive headphones off or you'll be a red stain on the front of a tipper truck before long. This isn't a 'cool' look. Being able to hear cyclists screaming at you at the top of their lungs will definitely aid your survival rate too.

    C*&kwomble.

Top ranting, and an apt username.

I nearly smashed into a guy who did the same around Nine Elms - the traffic was stationary so he assumed he could step off the pavement, not bothering to look right to check the cycle lane. Thankfully no headphones on this one so I scared the shit out of him by shouting at him just as he was stepping off the pavement, and threw an angry 'look, you w@nker' over my shoulder.
  • Coming up to a mini roundabout, coming through some roadworks, signal right, but have to stop at roundabout.
A bloke in a minibus is behind me.

I move off, going around the mini roundabout (novel approach I grant you), he tries to come past me on my right as he goes on the wrong side of the mini roundabout. Owing to a traffic island on the exit he cant get past so has to come back behind me anyway!

    What a friggin asshat.

I think he got the fact that I thought he was the above through the medium of hand signals.

I was crossing the road earlier (had just been to get my dreads cleaned at the hairdressers), all was going well, I had some great tunes on full blast, then this mad cyclist nearly took me out as I skipped across the road, looked like he was screaming at something (couldn't hear do to the awesome beats I had blazing) why are cyclists always so angry?

then got into my minibus and some tool is trying to cut in from my left!

Gah, yes, people crossing the road without looking. Happened to me in Regent's Park when I was out training, last week.

This lad - who out of interest looked like the Boston Marathon bomber - just stepped off the traffic island in front of half a dozen of us. And there he is, just ambling across to the kerb. I shout and he just stares at us and stops dead in the road. He then realises we're gonna hit him and so he ambles out of the way.

"FUCK1NG HELL, MATE!" "WAKE UP!" probably landed on deaf ears. Waste of skin.

You weren't on your Starley yesterday turning onto Lower Thames Street (from North turning westbound) rush hour last night? Saw a guy on a Starley whizzing around the corner as I waited at the eastbound lights - you don't see many around so I remembered it.

not sure it's a legitimate rant but I was using the completed bit of segregated CS8 on the way home last night, passing a gaggle of cyclists heading towards Big Ben when I noticed something not quite right - SOMEONE WAS COMING THE OTHER WAY, directly towards me! Suddenly the nice smooth wide stretch of tarmac seemed a lot narrower!
