Bit of a longshot but if anyone fancies a 10k trail (and I mean VERY trail!) run/race next Wednesday at 7.15pm, me and Mrs Matt are going for it. It goes right through our village and is mostly my regular route - except you have to run up those hideous steps - just did most of the route - rather tiring!

Bissoe sounds like fun! I will have to get myself down there soon.

FSR - i would be up for another ride mate but i've got to take the bike back on friday evening  If i've got the bike back by sunday (unlikely) i will be up for a ride around bissoe.

How is everyone's week? Mine is boring as fook so far

You could always bring the Hardrock?????

As I said, it won't be a fast ride.

As for my week - 3 day weeks are a bu**er sometimes, but I had 2 interviews today and have one tomorrow, so it might turn out to be a very good week.
Oh & I get to ride on Friday 8)

    Sounds interesting Matt.

Entry is a bit steep. I guess by 'affiliated', they mean to Truro Running club????

I'll pass on the info, as a couple of triathletes I know might be interested.

Does anyone know who runs the facebook page for cornwallmtb? I tried to join the group but never had a response and as such haven't been accepted.

Nice to see you all enjoying your rides.

Not long had a go on the anthem x1, omfg what a bike so light and so fast really impressed me, so much so i've slapped a deposit on one, no choice anyway as it's one of the last left in the uk, the x3 that is.
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Guess you won't make it then. We'll be there around 3.30pm on Friday. Be done by 6.

I'm trying to decide if I should do a road or mtb ride on Sunday . . . .

Just three days fresh from giant, im unsure if the steerer on my rebas will fit im really crossing my fingers on that one.

Won't be picking it up for at least a week or two, you won't believe how light the x1 is, with my bits on it'll be shocking, you are very perched on it but i love that kind of ride. :D

Best bit is the x3 is a better black/silver, the frameset is blue/silver which im not so keen on.

Seriously tim it's such a ride, your bike is what 23lbs? a top specced anthem from what i've seen will match that.

Mark - all these events seem a bit pricey. My coastal 11.5k run was £25 and my tri was £40!
    Good luck with the interviews.

Dazza - looks tasty. Seems a few full sussers are getting to the low 20lb mark these days - amazing!

    Mine's around 23lbs now but it's a hardtail...

Yeah i expected it to be a bit flexy, nope rigid as anything, 22lbs isn't unheard of neither, and it feels so damned fast, my tomac is a lardarse by comparison.

  • technology has come on So much lately with the hydroforming and shaving of extra grams of the tubes etc. makes for some serious light stiff bikes!

the merida 96 top spec jobby is something like 18lb i think but! £7k! haha!

loks a top bike though, hear a lot of good things about the giants, but as you said, Long steerer tubes needed! i know Big Rich is Chuffed to bits with his!

Get yourself a 30lb FSR XC, then you'll know all about a heavy bike!

My road bike is 18lbs (ish). Scares me to think mtb's are getting close in weight.

Look forward to seeing you out in a few weeks.
If you fancy doing one of the Sunday mtb rides from Bissoe cafe, let me know (otherwise I might have my roadie).

    Matt
I can understand some of the prices for the larger events (setup, marshalls, insurance etc), but most club stuff is normally only a few quid.
If I have a new job, I might celebrate with a run!

Snapped the crank of my first "MTB" doing a paperound. Cracked my knee on the top tube and flung Sunday papers all over the road - DOH!

Mark - is that light as road bikes go? How light are the really silly ones? Picked up a very smart carbon Spesh road bike at CM and it literally felt comically light.

Well I've finally taken the plunge - Mrs Matt got clipless pedals (and is getting alarmingly quick...!). I didn't get on with them one bit when I first had them (Ritcheys on my 1997 Stumpjumper) and gave up after two years of constant crashing. Seems they have really moved on - clipping in is MUCH smoother and they hold better once clunked in.

Considered XTRs but they are just too pricey so gone for XTs - which also match the bike better... :lol: Should arrive tomorrow. Mrs Matt has M540s which tbh are pretty much the same just with slightly cheaper bearings.

I think - and this is based purely on personal opinion - that once hardtails gets below say 22lbs and full sussers get below 24lbs, things start to get stupidly expensive and too fragile.

The lightest road bikes are around 14lbs+.

Problem is that races like TdF have a min bike weight, so manufacturers end up building the team bike, then adding lead inside the frame around the BB.

It's not like carbon bikes are much lighter than aluminium either. Don't get me wrong, pick up a top of the range road bike & it feels sooooooo light.

This has a frame weighing 960g
    RIBBFRAR905_1_large.jpg

And you can buy a complete bike with high end groupset for £1100.

    This one is 1200g (2.6lb)
    J00001.jpg

A set of wheels will be 1700g (don't think you'll get down to 1500g)

These are both affordable everyday frames, not £5k+ race specials. How light do you want to go?

Considered a road biased bike but our regular cycling route has changed and includes a fair bit more off roading - that would kill a road bike!

Still not discounted the idea though as we can get Cyclescheme through our business too

Thought those mind have proved a little tempting.

Honestly, you might be better off with a cyclocross bike, if you are going to do any tracks etc on it.

Looked at the Tricross (quite seriously) but reckon our MTBs do everything we need them to do for now.

But I'm sure I'll find a reason to grab one at some stage.

Even a cyclocross bike would struggle on one downhill section (followed by steep climb) of our daily ride.
  • wow, you've finally gone back to clipless! nice one matt! the xts are normally refered to as the better buy over the xtr's due to the price etc! i do like all the blaming Mrs Matt for the purchases though!!!! 8)

Can i firstly appologise for the rain today, i think it may all be my fault as my Dry lube turned up this morning! (that and me buying a Massive bottle of Pedro's semi dry lube yesterday! now have enough lube for a decade lol!) so sorry all, its my fault!

i think its either on Poshbikes or on lightbikes that they have a Usable road bike at 7.4lb!!
that'll be my frame weight and a normal poo then!  i think they also have a usable mtb at 14lb too! (no poo analagy for this one) dont think they would take any abuse though! first slight drop ont he mtb and you'll prolly end up with a odd loooking uni cycle and some steering only connected by cables!! hahah!

Well thanks for the rain Timmo - I rode to work this morning!

No matter how much weight you save on the bike, it is still cheaper & better to lose weight yourself.

I've heard of 12lb road bikes on weight weenies etc, but 7.4lb is mental. In the end comfort & control mean nothing.
