XC in Cornwall - any willing volunteers ?

The horse is very chilled - gets really excited chasing someone!
So have you bought the Commencal? Which model?
I got a bit narked with Idless - just too much mud all the time. Recent routes around the Cowlands/Feock area are much quieter and less muddy. Very hilly though!
Mrs Matt has more go/less fear than me downhill - she hits those Idless jumps like a loon too! It's nice having a missus who is quick on a bike (she kick butt on her tri in the ride section) but occasionally a bit annoying too! Luckily I can race ahead when the hills point upwards. Phew.0 -

Chilled horses are always the best, when i got thrown and caught him up he just stood there munching grass cheeky sod.
It will be the super 4, might be at least 2-3 weeks yet depending on factors, rest assured i'll be screaming it from the rooftops when it does arrive, hell people will know when it's been ordered.
Well rumour has it we're in for a heatwave and im on hols next month, it will be an ideal time for some idless action but like you say it's stupidly muddy, you remember my first ride there, i had semi slicks on wtf, no traction anywhere. i threw the bike into the hedges because i was losing my rag with the place.
I was much better once i got a feel for it on rides with helen and mark, night rides were good fun as was the superman i did.
And the p7 torch held it's own very well indeed.
Funny you should mention less fear with downhill, or maybe it's just my age slowing things down.
Mind aren't stumpys meant to be very twitchy when going down? The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Dazz, funny you should mention that Superman! we commented on it when we were there week before last! idless isnt that bad at the mo, not too bad, the few days Really hotweather dried it up lovely, although still a few sections under the tree cover that are a bit damp/lightly boggy to catch you out, but generally quite good!
the trouble, much like tehidy, an hours about the limit really,
Dazz, you see the 900lumen light on deal extreme??Timmo.

It is a twitchy bike but I wouldn't change it for anything else. What makes it twitchy also makes it super agile and a demon climber. Just had a few nasty crashes in the past that have knocked me out, taken lumps out of my legs, shredded my arms, etc and I have too many responsibilities to break a limb so am careful. Managed some good DH pace on the tri but was constantly convinced I'd come off. Think things may have improved slightly though.
I found my old Spesh tyres were dire in mud - the Contis (MKs) are better.
But age might have something to do with it although surfing "fear" has yet to kick in.
Mum got thrown off a horse when I was about 10 - broke her back but it was actually fine - just very very worrying at the time!!
Super 4 ***goes to look it up on the 'net***
Looks very nice - Formulas as OEM too - cool! Shout if you want to get rid of either the new OEM ones or your old ones...0 -

Matt, i have to agree that it is interesting, nice to know your riding on occasion with a couple of riflemen haha!
this section does die quite often which is why i tend to post when i've been out and about during the week to keep it up the top of the page!!
maybe mark's got his roady head on this morning!

I'm obviously feeling a little too comfy in lycra at the moment.
I even went to photograph some lycra wearing bikers last week at a local Time Trial.
Not very often you get chance to compete against an Olympic Silver medalist:
I'm going mountain biking at the weekend to try and restore the balance.

Dazz, you see the 900lumen light on deal extreme??
Well you know the single lane that takes you to the top then there's another lane basically a u-turn taking you down, there's lots of umm doubles i would call it, up's n downs, in the end i lost grip on the bars and went flying over.
Idless is also the reason why i need a decent bike rack, i can't be doing with putting a mud lagged bike in the car.
Yeah i've seen the light, poor thermal contact between led and base, just poor everywhere really so right now i'll sit it out, from what i can gather the niteflux photon extreme is what you want, 1300lumen but a near perfect pread and 1.5hr runtime on full, it's two p7 top and a cree r2 spot down below, so the same as what i run but with one extra p7 trouble is it can only be imported which kind of sucks.
Cheers for the pm matt.
Formulas lol don't blame you they are superb brakes it'll be frame only im afraid can't blame you for asking though they have so much control, you're more than welcome to try my rig out when it's sorted.
Nasty smacks matt, can't say i've had anything that bad but i've gouged my forearm nicely when riding with mark on dartmoor, still have the scars from that one.
Conti tyres hmm, good but i keep getting punctures from thorns from my vapours so ended up with intense xc tyres instead which are great all rounders, similar to racing ralphs.
My black shark muds are only good in the thickest of mud anything else and they're nigh on deadly, something many reviews i've read didn't say, i'll keep them for such a day though, so bontrager mud x for me still brand new atm.
The super 4 hmm well it's not the lightest, the only bike that climbs faster than what i gather is the giant anthem x and there's bugger all in them, giant is fast because it's light but with the commie it's their contact system keeping that tyre nailed to the ground so you can power down, least that's the idea, but downhill for an xc bike it excels and it the top of it's league, commies love downhill i mean why do the athertons use them
This is the 4x, the super is the newer revised 2lbs lighter version of the meta 4x.

Racing with wendy eh nice one mark, don't know if i still have that piccy with me and her, top lass though and built like a racing snake, well she is mind.
Anyway must dash for the gym bbl.The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

A week? Cool! 8)
Helen - I surf there more often in the Summer - dogs are allowdd so we can take the hound. Think it's her favourite beach.
These (a little sequence with a floater at the end) are Perranporth about a month ago - taken by a mate's wife. Nothing special but it was still fun!

Are you prepping for a Different kind of 'Floater' in the last pic????! :P
love perran beach, not so keen on the main village bit though, all a bit too tat shoppy for me! used to come down for Sun downers at the watering hole when the wife's friend was running the bar! good times!Timmo.

Me christ no, im willing to bet you've been eyeing up that sexy bit of fsr in the window of clive mitchells too, i love the carbon weave pattern they've decided not to hide.
I trust you've been riding with one and all, i was going to turn up at the sis bash but never got around to it.
Your crossmax slr's are the reason i want to buy those industry nine wheels, i LOVE straight threaded hubs. The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Helen - agreed although PP is getting a bit better - Tin Fin for example is a great place to eat.
Also ideal for dogs and running I find but the main town is indeed minging.
Timmo - I know, poo stance tastic. Happens on occasion - but you need to bend to surf!
Dazza - that an Epic. I bloody love that bike! Trying to persuade Mrs Matt that we "need" it - not doing very well so far!
I like Hope wheels too - very nice. In fact the only part they make that I'm not sold on is their brakes. Got a Hope light, seatpost binder and headset and all of the bits are very well made.
Lush ride this morning - but it's not getting any easier yet!0 -
KernowCB wrote:A couple of hours?? I got it for the week baby!
Just make sure you've got the cash to take back with you, 'cos the only time they'll see that bike again is when you take it back for it's first service!
Dazzza
Wendy was taking it easy. Second fastest was only 1 min behind her (over 10 miles!!!). She did the '10' in 22:19 - that's close to 28mph average :shock:Stumpjumper FSR 09/10 Pro Carbon, Genesis Vapour CX20 ('17)Carbon, Rose Xeon CW3000 '14, Raleigh R50

Yeah i know helen has the previous incarnation, go on give in you know you want it.
Hope wheels are nice, i have their xc hub laced with db spokes brass nipples on a mavic x717 rim and it's been excellent but once you see the high end stuff you realise there's much more to be had.
I have a few hope bits and same as you im not set on their brakes, i had no end of problems with mono, mini and the m4's tried a larger 200m rotor still poor bite and dragged, the formulas are a revelation by comparison.
My use race stem i love, it's like a thomson but better, quality bit of kit i bought it as it's machined to be safe for carbon bars, seen too many snap in the past.
28mph mark impressive, i've not sat on a roadie for a long time so id hedge my average at 18-19mph, i did look at getting a focus cayo until my bike went and broke on me.The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
Giant Anthem X0 -
My carbon bars are reinforced with a metal matrix so they can't snap.
BBB may be cheap but they do make a few cracking items.
My Thomson seatpost is fantastic - I love the eliptical internal tubing... what a sad git.
And yes, I have bought a saddle mostly because it has carbon and ti in it...
Dazzza - Formula brakes. They have now brought out the "Megas" as well as doing the K18 and K24 - is it worth spending the extra or do the K18s do the job fine?0 -
K24's would be good, i only bought my oro puro's as everything else was sold out, plus they're what commie use, from what i could tell there's very little between them.
One thing though the k24's have on the k18's is the bite point adjuster which to me is good, plus they're only a few quid more anyway.

BBB indeed do a very nice cf stem, pricey but looks very nice but weight compared to ali is the same if not more due to the reinforcing anyway.
Did you know thomson makes and designs landing gear for most commercial aircraft, that's why they're so good, i love the feel of the crc machining. :oops:The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.
Giant Anthem X0 -
No I didn't but that's a fact I like a lot
Did a Materials Engineering degree - hence my love of all things CNC'd, carbon, Ti, etc, etc
Cheers for the brake info.0 -
No worries also if you have sram shifters they can bolt directly onto them, another little bonus. The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

Hambles
If you check the club site: www.cornwallmtb.kk5.org you'll see what they're up to this weekend.
I am going to Bissoe on Sunday. Actually meeting at the Factory Shop in Redruth at 8am for a quick spin before meeting a beginner group at Bissoe (9am I think). If you want to tag along, I can give you a lift from Fraddon.
I might also be up for a ride on Tuesday evening. Probably go to Dunmere.
