It's ment to be an all purpose compromise commuter/off road/training bike.

After 1 set of Rockshock Dukes, 1 pair of Pace RC36 Stealths, I decide on rigid forks as I preferred more direct steering and the bike just handles so well on rigid forks. weighs in at a touch over 20lbs.

Lovely that is. I'm planning something similar based round a Giant XTC to replace my aging Scott commuter. Much like you, my goal is an allrounder that I can ride to work on road but still enjoy hammering the trails on in my lunch hour.
Less internal organs, same supertwisted great taste.

The Kona has taken on commuter duties for a while at least:

I have since added some Bontrager Hank Slicks and a set of Carbon Forks are waiting in the wings for some free time to be fitted (they're in the box on the rack in this photo!).

It's not pretty or light but I cetainly feel a bit fitter for it! 9.25 miles to the station, where it is locked up for the day (or weekend).

    Is that a Raleigh Nitro?

And agree with LiT - a bad rain shower will work through those locks - you should be looking for at least Sold Secured Bronze level for that value of bike.

Higher if you definitely want it to stay where you put it.

There is a lot of very nice kit on here, so to redress the balance, here is something cheaper!!

This is heavy, but very tough, and has been somewhat modified from original spec. seat post rack is in use as the thread on one of the frame mount lugs is worn out
Bike one Dawes Acoma (heavily modified)
Bike two (trek) Lemond Etape (dusty and not ridden much)
Bike Three Claude Butler chinook, (freebee from
    Freecycle, Being stripped and rebuilt
    (is 3 too many bikes)

My commuter though I'm toying with the idea of getting a proper roadie...

Just treated it to a new seat, old one was worn away at the front and rubbing on my crotch but not in a pleasant way

The spare wheel behind the bike won't fit
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Wot Davis said - my ridiculously late-in-development bike/frame that I hope to have on the market soon.

The old and the new. Old retired after c25k miles. Still in the garage, and will be either rebuilt into a genuine cyclocross or parts harvested and built into a road frame.

Thanks - I hadn't clocked the links in your signature. Interesting blog. Never ridden a belt-driven bike. Sounds like the combination of belt and Alfine hub is a winning one! Good luck with the project.

Here's mine. Although it is a bit Dynamo'd up. I dont usually have the rack or the torch strapped to the front. I love my bike. Always been a MTBer so couldn't bring myself to by a road bike when i started commuting again (I'm fairly tempted now though...), but i also don't do FS. Shall be buying some 700c rims to make my life a bit easier though.

  • Nothing special, but works well as a year round commuter.

    DSC01524.jpg

Aluminium forks = really hard ride, but it was a bit of a bargain as a 2008 model bought last year from LBS.
Added SKS chromoplastics, SPDs and koolstops (original pads wore out in 2 months and were pants!) changed tyres to Conti Sport Contacts as Spesh All Conditions were prone to frequent P******* fairy visits even though they were flak jackets.
Oh and the bar ends, bargain from SJS Cycles.

It must be a very high traffic area when you have so many lights...

Mine is similar, although mine has one main rear light and then a pair of those small red led lights that use one CR2032 battery. Each light is placed on each side at the end of the seatstay so this way it will be like a big triangle from the back instead of a bunch of lights together.

Trust me it is much better to spread the lights than have them all bunched up like you have them. And just in case and whenever it is very dark I also got a red light on the back of the helmet. All lights stay lit all the time minus the one below the saddle that it is flashing.

It looks like a seatpost clamp. I don’t think it should be there... did you buy the bike 2nd hand? Has the PO bodged a spacer?

Now has fancy 700c aluminium wheels. I'll be upgrading to the latest technology of cotterless cranks, if they catch on that is.

That is one skinny rear mech! And those cranks...blimey. I presume you were on 27" wheels before and changed to give yourself half a chance of being able to get replacement parts. Any issues other than brake drop?

Does look very pretty, and that looks like a pretty mashy ratio. Those pedals are however an abomination
