Looks like I am nightshift again this saturday, which means its going to be a fortnight before I can get out on a weekend run again. On the strength of that I am considering a turbo trainer or a set of rollers so I can join in the mid week 'fun' .. Personally I fancy a set of rollers but I know nothing about either. So any tips would be appreciated. Fire away................
Andy0 -
Hi Andy,
Have never used rollers but apparently they are very good for improving your pedalling motion due to the balance it requires you to develop to stay upright on them.
I think unless you get an expensive set of rollers you can't vary the resistance on them although I may be wrong.
I got my first turbo in November and it's been a good purchase. I find it quite monotonous and 50 minutes is my record when using it on my own however 50 minutes of interval training is still a good workout and beats watching the telly (I use mine in front of the telly anyway )
I bought Tacx Satori which has super high resistance and is a magnetic type with low noise levels. It was around £140 however I wish I'd paid the extra £100 or so and bought the Tacx Flow which has a digital handlebar display for heart rate and power output.
The Cycleops Magneto gets a good write-up and can be had for around £115-£120 online plus you get a training DVD with it.
If you've got the money I'd buy the Flow as you can always later on upgrade it to the Virtual Reality type if you so desire for an extra £150 or so.
Cheers,

Report from the Hanger -
Bill, Mike, me and Mrs BillR1 aka Shona partook in a 90 minute 'fun' fest in the Hanger of Anger last night.
Bill was breaking-in his lovely new silver Langster, Shona had the Allez, MIke was on his turbo-charged Ribble and I had my trusty (or should that be rusty?) Giant Bowery fixie.
Bill had us doing 3 x 5 minute high cadence efforts with a 1 minute break :x in between.
after a 10 minute rest we did 3 x 3 minute out of the saddle efforts with another 1 minute break   in between each effort.
Finished off with 2 x 5 minute TT pace efforts.
On a cold night in the Hanger things were spiced up with a 'sexy' soundtrack from Mrs Young's iPod (aye right Bill - we all know that's your music on there )
Another good session from Mr Young with the promise of proper 'man' music next week. We live in hope0 -
Proposal for Club 'Away Day': -
It was discussed at the hanger last night that a recce of the Etape Caledonia route may be popular with club memebers?
Can we have a 'show of hands' to get an idea if this would be a good club outing, perhaps in mid-April time before the sportive season starts proper?
The route is 80 miles and according to Bill - who put in an impressive time last year with Stevie - is fairly flat with the exception of the climb up Schiehallion.
I am aware of another couple of club members, Peter and Neil, who also did good times last year I know a few have their entries in, or will enter, for this year.
I personally won't be entering the etape however I would like to do the route as part of a club run.
Please post up if you are interested in principle. Once we get an idea of numbers we can sort out a date that suits everyone.
Cheers,

Grantus
I did it last year and can vouch personally for Bill and Stevie's impressive form. The only time I got past them is when they stopped for a slash.
As I've signed up for some more fun in the sun this year, I might be on for the recce ride.
Keep us up to speed.

Anything to make my day more interesting
I'll be back out again on Saturday. Can we do a gentle 10 miler on the flat (canal towpath or similar)?0 -
Alas, I shall have to work on Saturday so I shall miss your return however there's a space in the Hanger of Anger with your name on it0
-
I am hopeful that, judging by your above discription of the last session, I might be able to join you around May. At least without throwing up after the first 5 minutes.0
-
Nah, just do what I do and feign exhaustion - nobody will ever know
Malcolm, keep yer ear to the ground! Hopefully the etape recce could make a nice day oot!0 -
I would be happy to join in your recce of the etape, although I only have 2 weekends off in 5. If it coincides with my weekend off then count me in.
Managed 30 miles on Monday night in pitch black over towards Clackmannan Bridge then Alloa before returing home via Bridge of Allan and Plean.
Left house at 0730hrs this morning heading towards Doune to meet a friend of mine that managed to drive to Blairdrummond without cycling shoes. Headed out on my own to Arnprior and returned to Larbert via Dumbarton Road through thick fog and managed 45 miles.0 -
David,
I'm generally flexible re. weekends - this Saturday coming is only required because we've got auditors in next week and I need to, ahem, sort out my filing.
If you know in advance which weekends you've got off let me know and we'll pencil one of them in - seeing as you're first to respond who can struggle to make some weekends.
How about sometime in April - avoiding Easter? Do you know that far in advance what you'll be working?
May I also suggest a Saturday as that seems to be the day the club manages the biggest turnout?0 -
Grant, thanks for your quick response. I will have all me weekends off sent to you by Saturday. I would appreciate if it could be organised around my weekends. I have read about the Etape in cycling plus. Some time before June (trossachs ton) would suit me down to the ground and would be perfect training for the ton as long as I can hide in the bunch as usual.
Thanks again

Nice one - we can pencil in a date once you know your work plans then.
Cheers,
Grant0 -
>Please post up if you are interested in principle. Once we get an idea of numbers we can sort out a date that suits everyone.
I was thinking of something similar but just going as far out as Kinloch then doing a recce of the biggest climb (Schiehallion) and back. Partly out of laziness, partly to keep a few surprises for the day itself, assuming I do enter. I'd be happy to do this on my own or with a 'petit Etape' group.
With Easter being relatively late this year (10th-13th) I wonder if that might be a good weekend option?0 -
Intersted in principle but going at Easter will clash with the NC Easter Meet.0
-
Foz
I will give it a miss as I know what's coming from last year but thanks anyway.
See you at 8 tonight.
Bill
ps: No turbo torture tonight guys as I have the committe meeting at Foz's so I will be doing a session at 5 when I get home.0 -
Easter weekend is out for me as I was hoping to get down to Manchester for the NC meet0
-
Gosh, I was planning to get home earlier than 5. Do you think the meeting will really take that long?0
