I've already posted on the training forum here but could anyone give me some advice on a good heart rate monitor or tell me what ones you use and are happy with?

I've got a basic trip computer however after buying the Lance Armstrong training programme over the hols it's all based on either power output or heart rate so I want to start training a bit more 'scientifically' than going on the turbo and just mashing away, etc.

Oh, one other thing, not too expensive :D

    Hey Jim,

If this is what's happening try applying a little of the brake fluid liberally around the edge of the piston and leave it overnight. The fluid will soak in and can free up the piston enabling you to push it home with a screwdriver.

Be careful what fluid you use. Shimano brakes use mineral oil and Hayes use DOT 4 fluid. You can get a small container in Halfords for 3 quid and apply some to the brake with a small brush.

Just an extra note, remember to take the pads out before sloshing brake fluid around the place as the stuff destroys the pads. You'll know if you have got fluid on the pads as it'll sound and feel really rough.

Another note, some hydraulic systems have allen key adjuster on the outside. I'm running old single pot (i.e. one fixed and one moving pad) magura louises the have allen key adjusters on both sides.

Yes, I am a closet anorak too!

  • OS65 - just looked at the piccies from the super X. Looks like a fun course. 22nd place aint to sloppy either - well done.

...but those steps going up from the loch! They're evils b***ers for sending the race up there! They are fun to ride down tho! Done that a few times :D In fact I've ridden down pretty much every flight of stairs on that campus!

  • Thanks for the offer Bill but I am backshift this week and my scout meeting is on a tuesday anyway so the hanger is kind of out for me I'm afraid. :(

I have a shed and I'm not afraid to use it!

Some good pics from the cyclo X Matt. It sounds like the alpine challenge was a laugh as well  ..

Unfortunately Ive been floored with a vomiting bug.So as pennance for taking it easy ,lying in my bed all day. When I am feeling better I am going to do a loop of the carron valley doing the crowroad and the tak' ma doon road ( or whatever its called ) . Now the question is ....is there an easy ( er ) direction to do it? I was going to cycle from polmont to kilsyth and go from there either clockwise doing the crow road first or anti clockwise doing the Tak ma doon road first? Any thoughts.....

Hi Matt, nice to know i'm not the only anorak in the club!

Sparky, sorry to hear you're not feeling too great. Thanks for the offer of the HRM. How much would you be looking for for it? You can send me a pm if you like. P.S. I've been bringing your stem out in my camelbak each time but I forgot to give it to you at the 10 on boxing day and it seems every other time i'm out on a Sunday you've been out on Saturday, or vice versa! I'll give it back to you next time we catch up - unfortunately it's the same length as the one i've got.

    Andy,

Doing the loop from Kilsyth up the Tak then over the Crow from Fintry is definately harder if you ask me although you should be ok with the triple chainring on your tricross.

Either way is still a hard run - especially cycling out and back from Polmont. From memory it's approx. 30 miles from the bottom of the Tak all the way round and back to Kilsyth. Probably add another 12 miles each way from Kilsyth to Polmont. Doing the Crow-Fintry-Tak-Kilsyth Loop is about 1000m of climbing. I'd be well up for doing that run with you if you want to go on a weekend? It's only 5 miles from my house to the bottom of the Tak

Matt, top marks for the website. Just looked through it. Very easy to navigate through and I'm sure it will help to generate new members.

Only been out once in the last 14 days since coming off but new bike and wheels should help get me back out soon. Can I suggest a classified section on the website where members can buy and sell kit, as I currently have a set of Mavic Elite wheels and a set of Dura Ace wheels that need to go as I just purchased a new wheel set.

    Cheers David

    David,

I may be interested in having a look at the wheels you have for sale.

Can you let me know the specs. and what you'd be asking for, either here or via PM is fine by me.

    Thanks,

    Grant

I'm going to set up a forum for the website where classifieds can be added.

Question is will the forum be popular enough to get bikeradar posters using it - what do you think would you use the clubs own forum?

Great website (just because of that mistake in the jersey polling are we stuck with that colour for the website too?)

Whilst I think there's enough activity for an on-site forum, we need to maintain a presence here as it's been our main recruitment resource. I certainly would never have picked up on the club if it hadn't been for this thread.

    As ever, happy to discuss.

    Matt,

Maybe we could add a link to British Cycling's events section?

Also, maybe we could ask West Lothian Council if they could post a link to the website on their leisure/recreation section of their webpage?

Just a thought - I don't know how simple it is to do these things as I'm not very I.T. compatible

cheers for ideas fellas - all good thoughts keep 'em comin

Malcolm - agreed on the radar presence. Out of interest though 10 members have joined after finding us on bikeradar, the rest of the 30 are from word of mouth/posters/startsheets

Grant/Matt - cheers for the info on brakes. Will have a look at them and see whats what. Think I have Avid Juicey 3's or something like that. I know one pad is fixed and tother moves. Would be gutted if I had to get them rebuilt/replaced.

Bill - plan to be at teh Hanger tonight. Think I have yet another cold brewing so may be taking it easy.

Mat - fantastic job on teh website. Well impressed.

Yellow. lets move on otherwise we'll keep debating and the jerseys won't be ready for the new season. If we choose red it won't please everyone either.

  • Just had a look at the web site, which looks fantastic. Proper job and well done!
    The yellow jerseys look great!
  • Forwarded the URL of the website onto a friend who's a CTC commitee member in Glasgow; not sure he was too impressed with the bit about going there if we're too hot. Told him to take the twigs out of his beard and get over it.

  • OS65. No need. I just don't think he liked the truth starting him in the face.
