    A wee question,

There has been mention a number of times about club kit and stuff. Should i be a 'club' member to be going on the saturday/sunday runs,.
I would be a little reluctant to join up as so far in the last couple of months ive only managed one ride, but if its only a few quid then its not a problem.
I was also thinking about insurance and stuff.
    Andy

Hi Andy the guys on the forum formed a club last January: West Lothian Clarion. We've now got nearly 30 members. The rides we organise are open to anyone, We don't push membership but it seems like after 3 or 4 times out most people seem to want to join.

From what people tell us us we are different to other clubs in that we don't leave people behind and encourage all levels. If you do fancy joining at some point costs £15.

If you wanted take part in club events like our 10TT on Boxing day you would have to be a member for insurance purposes. The club is affiliated to the SCU so our club races and events have the necessary insurance.

By joining the club you can take out 3rd party insurance through our affiliation with the National Clarion for £12 annually which is useful if you don't want to race but are interested in taking part in Sportives.

Otherwise silver membership with the BCF is something to look into for £35 if you want to race.

Cheers for that OS65. I will more than likely join up in the new year and get the 3rd party insurance.. I would hate to take someone out on the ice or something and see them out of pocket or be faced with paying out a couple of grand for a new bike , or even worse to see someone injured an not able to work..

    thanks

    Andy.

Is there a west lothian clarion website..I am just about to google it..

  • Hi Guys,

I've been following this thread since almost the beginning, in fact i met, i think it was, Brian and Matt(Stork and a Trek) riding through Westfield about 6 months ago.

After an almost blank year in terms of cycling for myself and with new year resolutions in the offing I've decided to take the plunge finally and join up officially. Is it Matt(OS65) that I PM about this ?

I hope to make it out to one of the Saturday runs before Christmas if not then i'm off work for the 2 weeks over the festive period so should get out then.

    Look forward to meeting up.

    Hi Stuart
Yes its me (OS 65) you PM to get on the mailing list. Sadly, I don't have a Stork or a Trek so it must have been Brian and George you met, I'm also about half as tall as those guys too!

2-weeks at Christmas :P You'll be flying in the new year

Look forard to seeing you on the saturday runs...

I have pencilled in the Knockhill TT and the Corrieri TT for March.

I will have a bash at these two as well as the Musselburgh Audax.

I may also add the Dalmeny Audax on the back of a positive scran report from Matt

Looking forward to our own TT on boxing day. I may have to, ahem, have a private recce of the course to see if my target of 30 minutes is realistic :)

P.S. thanks guys for the racing tips. I kind of got the impression that despite being the so-called beginners level cat 4 would be a complete shock to the system at first. I was looking at some results from Super 6 'B' races from this year and noticed that the guy from Stirling bike club who came first on the 130 mile Ullapool sportive is 'only' a cat 4 racer however he seemed to place quite high. If that's the standard them I suppose I've got no chance..

I'm not under any illusions though of being able to compete as such, more that trying to hang on to a bunch for a few laps of a circuit would be really good training then take it from there........

72? you'll only get an average of about 22-23mph on that (unless you have a spectacular spin!) :P

According to http://www.fixedwheel.co.uk/fixedwheel%20records.htm (a great resource for fixed wheel riders) Back in 1992 Nik Gardiner 21.30 (well over 130rpm average) '10' on 72" fixed. Zak Carr holds the medium gear (max 72") '25' in a time of 53.23! That's going some!

Sadly we're not all superhumna like that - I can comfortably spin my 70" upto around 25mph but probably couldn't sustain it for too long.

I just saw an email from Matt which detailed I had got 'ride of the year' award and would like to say thankyou to all who voted as that day was probably the worst day I have ever felt on on a bike both physically and mentally.

Have not been out with the Clarion much this winter as have been working most Saturday mornings but me and George however have been getting out late on Sunday/Saturday once the frost has lifted and keeping the miles in. We did 45m on Sat afternoon and managed a fair pace back home over the Bathgate hills.

Will make it out defo over the Xmas period. Thanks
    Brian B.
  • Brian, I was at the xmas night out and heard of your exploits on the Fred Whitton - big respect for completing that one injury or no injury! Got an entry a few years ago but chickened out due to my lack of training - my excuse seems a bit pathetic now!

Here is the route of the Knockhill Mountain TT.

(I don't know how I managed to list it as Penrith :?:  )

Would anyone like to incorporate part of this in a Sunday run to recce the course?

    Sounds like a plan!

    BOXING DAY 10 MARSHAL WANTED
I'm looking for a volunteer to marshal at the Kirkliston RAB for the Boxing Day 10 - Anyone able to do it? There might be a pint and a packet of pork scratchings in it.
You'll be needed to be in position from about 9.45 to 10.30am

Send me a PM if you are up for it.

If we are struggling to get someone then I'll do it - we don't really need someone to push off do we?

P.S. any word on the club kit?

    No pprobs Matt.

Hey Bill, what's the latest word on the club kit?
  • Whilst out on saturday a running comenary was kept on how cold our feet were, well as I was skipping through the net looking for xmas presents I have stumbled upon these.

    Mountainlife - Fiery Feet
    Last 8 hours
    Easy to activate
    Biodegradable
    Provides instant heat
    http://www.mountainwarehouse.com/Ski_Sn ... 13422.aspx

I have no idea how suitable or effective they would be but I thought it would gain some interest. I'll get some after I get paid next week (if i remember) and there is a moutain warehouse in the Gyle.
  • Hi Warenbald

For a less disposable alternative, try these:

    http://www.roseversand.de/output/contro ... tail2=3054

about twice the price but reusable for approx 100 times.

I had a pair of sealskin socks plus some neoprene overshoes on on Saturday and they did the trick (and I was on the shaded side of the hills).

Cake is just weakness entering the body
  • Maplin do battery powered heated insoles http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=218156 currerntly on special offer for £9.99 (normally £19.99)

They apparently only last about 2 hours on 3 AAA batteries but that's probably enough to get you between cafe's to defrost the rest of you and swap batteries  They're also only water resistant so I dunno how they'd last if you got caught out in a shower or anything.

There's also heated hats, gillets and gloves in the same range.

Club member, Craig emailed me to say he is heading down to Glentress on Saturday and is asking if anyone wants to join him. PM me if you are interested, his message below:

"Me and my buddy are heading down to Glentress on Saturday to do the black run. We are starting at 2pm from the bottom carpark, which will mean that the latter part will be in the dark.

Could you send something out to everyone so that if there is any interest then they are more than welcome to join us.

With the last bit being in the dark people will need to be prepared and have suitable lights.

We have no intention of blasting round so it will be on the easier pace but if anyone wants to blast it they are more than welcome to.

    Thanks bud"

Stukie - It was me and Sparky that you met that day. We turned off to go through Torphicen after meeting yourself on the Westfield road. I too will be getting out over the festive period although I have not been out with the Clarion lately because I have been working mega hours.

The weather that day we met you was supberb - we wont get that for another 5 months or so.

    Have a good xmas.

I've got family commitments on Boxing Day so probably won't be able to make it along to the TT, otherwise would have been more than happy to marshall at the ROB. There is a small chance that I could get along for part of it, but wouldn't want to commit and then find out last minute that I can't after all.

Anybody planning to head out at the weekend? I'm thinking of heading up to KWM on Saturday or may just head out on eth mountain bike for a bit of fun/a change.
