Summary
- Special Counsel Robert Hur has issued his report into how Joe Biden handled classified documents after serving as Barack Obama's vice-president
- The report finds that Biden "wilfully retained and disclosed classified materials" but no criminal charges are warranted
- Hur comments on the president's memory, saying it "appeared to have significant limitations" in interviews with investigators
- In an interview, Biden "did not remember when he was vice-president", and forgot when his term ended, the report says
Oh dear. This isn't going to do the democrats any favours!

It certainly won't. Still wonder how it is that the US has two old men to choose from, one of whom is a mobster, and the other's main qualification now seems to be that he isn't a mobster (even if he has used his knowledge of the bonkers US system to get quite a lot of good stuff done).
That said, it does feel like Hur has gone out of his way to highlight Biden's memory on stuff that has no impact on the actual case. At the risk of going all conspiracist, it does feel like this stuff's been highlighted for political ends, rather than clarifying the actual matter Hur was charged with investigating. One begins to wonder if there is anyone in government or law enforcement who isn't overtly on one side or the other.

Maybe just coincidence.
On November 1, 2017, Hur was nominated by President Donald Trump to be the next United States Attorney for the District of Maryland.[6] On March 22, 2018, his nomination was reported out of committee by voice vote.[7] He was confirmed by voice vote later the same day.[8] He was sworn in on April 9, 2018.[9]

Let's see if I can get this right from memory...There was a bit on YT from an SA guy who has a show in the US and spent time in England. He was asked about the differences and his main one was that there was no team politics in England. The PM gets flak from everyone. He thought that was refreshing and a good thing.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Should have stuck to track cycling.

God that's torture.
Trusted what an aide said on the cab ride over. No plan B. All the "fiscal rules" stuff reminds me awfully of Gordon Brown's arbitrary rules anyway.

We want fiscal rules because it offers attack lines against labour but we also want unfunded tax breaks just before the election as a bribe.
In the corrupt banana republic strategy game Tropico, offering an election year unfunded tax break is one of the things you can do to shore up support, though it mainly improves your standing with less well educated Tropicans.

now you've gone and blown the gaff on the government's main planning tool

Surprised Biden didn't make a huge point of Hur being a Trump appointee, point out that the special counsel cleared him of any wrong doing and that the comments by Hur were going outside of his brief. His response came across as reinforcing the view of him as a decent but slightly befuddled old man. Him and Trump both show signs of confusion / memory loss but Trump, much as I hate the man, comes across as having far more energy.

I accept that mine is a minority view but it matters whether she was there or not because the man who aspires to be the next PM stated during PMQs that she was there which wasn't actually the case. If you're happy for the next PM to be at worst a liar or incompetent, or at best, simply in too much of a hurry to make his point to bother with fact-checking then that's up to you!
But to the others who have questioned why I've been pushing this line, it's just out of interest to see how far a group of reasonable folk (based on my years of interactions with the Cakestoppers) will go to overlook blatant falsehoods from prominent politicians just because it suits their political objectives. The answer it seems is "a long way" which is slightly concerning given the pile of cowdoo the country is in following the Brexit/Johnson era, that was itself built on falsehoods.

Its the old leftie/centre leftie 'fee pass' making a return. If it ever left...

Storm in a teacup as far as I'm concerned. He was expecting her to be there and she wasn't. Whole thing is boring.

Not that I can be arsed to be dragged into this but Starmer clearly (very clearly) says " . . . of all the weeks . . ." to bring this up ". . . .when Brianna's Mother is in the chamber" - he made no mention or inference that she was there at that precise time and I don't really see what difference it makes anyway.
FWIW, I heard it live and don't think it was "scripted" (though Sunak's part seemed to be) . . . Starmer only mentioned it because Sunak brought up the (side splittingly funny) 99% gag

Short of going up into the gallery I'm not sure how he could have checked. If he'd been told beforehand she was going to be there (as she was shortly afterwards) then it seems reasonable for him to believe she was there. Your scenario would require him to know in advance the jibe was going to be made. For me the bigger issue was that he took a tasteless comment aimed at him and brought the Brianne stuff into it, he should have just called it out as a tasteless comment instead of using her name to make his point.

We’ll all be talking about some other ‘travesty’ next week.

She was in the Palace of Westminster. Are we seriously focusing on her exact dimensional location? The point of her being present is that it illustrates that culture war 'jokes' are not just a risk-free way to bash your political opponent, but have real negative consequences for people outside of politics.

Honestly what news/opinion pieces are you consuming that is making this seem like such a big deal?

The line has all the hallmarks of Tory client journalists using the only angle Team Tory could find to try to blunt the tastelessness of Sunak's ho-ho-ho 'joke'. It's even more desperate than 'currygate'.

The UK's current debt to GDP is around 100%, so I'm not sure where his figures are from. He says 23/24 is 89% of GDP. The only reference I can see to that is one that nets off the BoE's holdings.
0 -
Yes, both figures were net of BoE holdings. He mentions that in the recording.

That's a metric I've often quoted, but it is highly unusual, so I'm not surprised she was caught out and didn't recognise the figures. It's also a bit tricky if the BoE decides to QT, and then the government is accused of increasing debt because of the actions of an independent body.

His figures are from the OBR forecast as he says in the clip. Lads, the information is there if you want it.
