Probably a lot different now that I have a little one. I think they were irresponsible. You can't blame them for trying their hardest to keep the story on the front pages of all the papers though, I know I'd do the same.
I was watching the news on TV the other morning. They had an ex copper on, who'd been out there to help report on the story, and according to him, the police are now saying that the apartment hadn't been broken into, therefore the door was either left un-locked, or opened from the inside.

No Frankie and it's impossible to watch them 24/7 but you do your best don't you.
Any why the hell didn't they use the babysitting service??

Frankie, there is under your gaze/by your side, then there is within your ability to supervise or look out for them. They were in no way able to look out for their kids where they were. They should have arranged a child minder, but they didn't and their eldest daughter is now paying the price for that. If Saskia gets up in the night Heidi knows about it. If one of their kids had gotten up in agony for any reason they would not have known and that is negligent

Thats the problem we really don't know do we, the best we can hope for is that she was kidnapped to order for a family who will love her and take care of her, maybe they will decide to do the right thing and leave her somewhere she can be found and brought home.

just bin thinking about this but there is not much you can do with a little child other than keep her locked up, they shoud hve to let her go some time soon surly.

Goodness. I wish I was that naive. I'm sincerely jealous that you've actually thought that.
Unfortunately I can think of lots of things that could happen to her (if she's still alive) which I won't even care to mention. I don't think there's any hope of her parents finding her, sadly. I can't blame them for persevering and not giving up hope though.

Similar sentiments here Hamish. I'm now trying not to think about it, as the alternatives to them finding her safe and well are truly unspeakable!

I'm undecided as to whether to throw accusations at the parents or not. Not being a parent myself I can't even begin to understand what led them to make the decisions they did on that night, but the 21 short months I was an aunt I wouldn't have dreamed of leaving Caitlan alone even if she WAS sleeping soundly but that's just me and everyone's different.
I hope her parents get news, be it good or bad, which will bring them some kind of closure but it's not looking promising.

In 2002/03 there were 846 child abductions reported to the police in the UK. 47% by strangers (attempted), 9% by strangers (successful) 23% by parents, 22% 'other' (i.e. some sort of relationship with the child).
Unfortunately not all cases are reported in the media, and certainly not to this extent. I get the feeling that the reason there has been so much publicity is because Maddy is cute, the circumstances of the abudction (left alone) and the place of abduction (while on holiday - where somebody's relaxing, tranquil expereince was interrupted by something terrible). These provided hooks for the media to begin with. The the differences between the approach of the Portugeuse police and UK police gave the story a couple more days coverage. By then there was a critical mass of interest and the story ran and ran.
I do't know how i feel about the parent's leaving Maddy in the room while they had dinner. Is it that different to puttin gyour kids to bed and being in your garden, or popping next door for something? No matter what anyone thinks, the parents must be going throug hell -assuming they have nothing to do with it.
One thing which stands out however, is why only Maddy was taken from the room. Personally i don't like thinking about that point too much.

The restaurant was only 200 yards from the apartment, I bet Posh & Becks (among many others) are quite often 200 yards away from their kids in their huge LA houses... So as Jon says, where's the difference and at what point can it be considered neglectful behaviour?

There are bound to be more people on a holiday complex than wondering around your locked house.

Capt Jon - I had a look at the site you're quoting last night. Unfortunately work was too busy and I didn't get a chance to post.
There are quite a few pieces of unclear information on that site - they say 846 abductions were reported, yet 46% were attempted and the 22% of 'others' includes attempted abductions by others. So that means that the actual amount of attempted abductions is somewhere between 46.1 - 68% of 846 the average being 57%. That means that whilst the site quotes 846 abductions reported to the police, an average of 482 cases didn't result in any abduction occuring. So how can no abduction occurring be reported as an abduction?
Also, they don't give the figures for the individual percentage rises for each group but state that the largest percentage occurred in the stranger attempted group. I'd suspect that a lot if this is due to an increased awareness (and maybe some paranoia and misreporting) rather than as large an increase in paedophile activity as the figures may initially suggest.
And they state that 'offenders convicted of child abduction are mainly sexually motivated and are not related to the victim' whilst they make up only 9% of the total, yet parents abducting children make up 22% but it would appear not convicted by a reasonable large ratio if the minority are the ones convicted. Surely there must be something amiss there. Aren't they both crimes? Or is it okay if you're related?

I completely agree Hamish, the figure are a bit odd. But i think the fact remains most abductions aren't reported to any extent in the media.
As for both being crimes, i guess they are, but it would depend on the evidence i suppose and if it could be sorted out without going to court.

Posh and Becks have numerous staff to look after the kids, and a huge media circus to take pics of any kidnappers as they leave with the stoopidly named little ones.

this is somethinkg the parents will regret for the rest of thier lives, i don't think they need to be reminded by the press all the time that it was a bad decision. she could have been out of Portugal within a couple of hours, across the water to morroco.

i personally wouldn't leave three small children on their own for ANY length of time. i can understand it if it's a split second thing where their backs were turned for seconds, but an evening?
also they seem very well presented, the mum wearing make up for press conferences etc. i'd not be able to speak for how upset i was, let alone care how i looked.
it's not nice, i agree, but there's lots of far more important things going on in the world at the moment. no one seems particularly worried about what's happening in zimbabwe? where's the thread about that? people are dying there every day. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A14061313 bikeybikey0 -
