What's the forums view on it. Just read quite an interesting thread on AOL message board, which is very sceptical of the parents and got me thinking about it?

• it happens a lot on holidays.

what annoys me is the fact the park they were staying at has many registered child minders. i suppose they thought they were ok to leave 3 kids alone? allegedly they popped back every half hour to check on them though i suspect this is a cause for discussion.

i do not think they had a part in it, other than making a rather bad decision. one which they will probably regret for many years to come.

i hope, in my heart of hearts, they find maddy, alive and well.

Plenty of parents leave their children alseep in hotel rooms and go to the restuarant/bar there for a relaxing evening and check regularly on their kids. I know mine did. What they did was not too different. I don't think it's terribly irresponsible of them.

I think that there is now an unhealthy paranoia, largely propagated by the (tabloid) media's overreporting of these terrible incidents. Remember that practically every single child abduction gets vast amounts of media coverage. Just think how you would feel if every car crash, assault, burglary or murder in the UK was given the same amount of coverage on a daily basis. You'd be too worried to go anywhere (not to mention snowed in from the amount of newspaper in your flat).

What happened is a very rare occurence and a tragedy. I think that they're clutching at straws with their continued appeals, but I can understand them clinging to what hope they have remaining until proven otherwise. I cannot imagine what they are going through.

Sorry but leaving a child asleep alone in a hotel room/villa is ridiculous . If they had been at home would they have popped the kids to bed and nipped into the pub.

I think as pevously said, they made a bad decision that they are regretting,it makes me sick thinking about being in thier situation.

Hamish, I totall agree with what you're saying. It is the sort of thing that everyone would criticise in retrospect, but it would easy not to think about the risks at the time. It's the same as saying, do you feel safe with your children sleeping in their own room at night. Surely someone could prise the windows and take them away without you knowing?

I honestly hope, I really do that they find her alive. Also, I hope we don't forget about all the other children that this happens to everyday, but never catch media attention.

Really? Not having a pop at your parents or anything, but I wouldn't dream of leaving my son in a hotel room on his own. Neither do I know any parents that would. Maybe its a different time but it is irresponsible. Terribly irresponsible.

I don't think they had anything to do with it but should share some of the blame.

They took a risk and are paying dearly.
Personally, I would never take that risk. As for saying that they could be snatched from the house, your absolutly right kestrel but you have no control over that whereas the parents did not HAVE to leave them and go out for the evening.
I know that these incidents are rare, but one is one too many and I would never take a risk like that with my daughter.
The boy that was kidnapped in Greece is Ben Needham, he would now be 17yrs old.

It is really really sad. I just can't understand how people can take someone's child away!? Do they have no feelings!? I really grieve for our broken world sometimes.

Life is full of risk making decisions. They took theirs and they got it wrong and are now paying the terrible price. My wife and I could never take that risk, but I'm willing to drive both children in my car. In which case am I most likely to (statistically) loose my kids???

My heart goes out to any parent suffering the loss of a child, I cannot begin to comprehend/contemplate how awful that would be.

I still can't believe social services aren't involving themselves. They left 3 kids, aged 3,2 and 2, unattended FFS! If that had been in Britain and a single parent had left them alone to go to the pub 200 metres away the kids would have been taken off them by now!

As for them paying the price.... what about Maddie? She's the one paying the price for having irresponsible, arrogant parents who now seem to be going through the "look at us, we're good Christians, how could someone do this to us?" act. They screwed up and deserve to be punished, but it wouldn't help get their other child back

The general thinking of people I know is that yes you do put your kids at risk everyday by driving, leaving them at school where someone could break in and attack them etc, but these are things that have to be done in everyday life, they have to go to school etc, but like I said in my previous post they should not have left them kids alone, it's not like they were just on their balcony, they were in a resturant, kids not in sight or ear shot.
I do feel horrible for them as they will never forgive themselves, how they live with themsleves and go on I really don't know.

I dont have kids, but feel that there was a huge lack of foresight by the parents. They are suffering it now tho'.

I dont want to offend people, but I'm getting fed up of all the images- Liverpool FC holding up a banner, yellow ribbons, all the other things. Including i read somewhere about a minutes silence for the little girl. Now I'm sorry but god knows how many people died in the world wars but they only get a minute.
I also hate all the press conferences, I do NOT need to see thier grief, I would hazard a guess that they would be utterly shattered by whats happened.

Sorry, rant over.

On the actual saga. I can see that the parents made a bad decision, but if this hadn't happened and a friend mentioned that on holiday they left the kids in the room and went for a meal at the restaurant within the same complex, within sight of the room, tou wouldn't have thought them mad or negligent. This is a ver very rare thing that happend 999 times out of 1000 the kids woulda been ok. Given that if someone actually set out to abduct that kid, there is not a lot the parents could have done to stop it.

I have to say that if it was my daughter that went missing I would do the same thing, anything that might get her back. Is true though that there are thousands of children in this country that live with sort of neglect day in and day out and are "overlooked".

Frankie, if she was with her parents she wouldn't have been kidnapped.
I do take your point, kids can go from their parents sides (jamie bulger) for example, but they increased that risk by leaving them alone.

Well, just my take on things, and the way I'd react. I certainly wouldn't come to a press conference. I might let out a statement thro' a lawyer, but that'd be it for me. I couldn't cope with all those people looking at me while under such stress. I personally dont think it helps, and some of the perpatrators must get off on seeing the distress they cause.
