I do, however, feel that alcohol should be restricted, ... somewhat out of control...

plans i read about on a car forum where RFID chips in number plates, sensors at the side of the road and logging everysingle car journey in the country.

Ah, the great RFID debate...

I wouldn't call that orwellian, though. To me, the important bit about big brother was the control, not the surveillance.

I wonder how much other taxes would have to be raised to compensate, if smoking were banned outright? Where would the NHS get it's money from?

if the smoking ban comes, which i cannot wait for! as i hate other peoples smoke, the NHS will have nothing to do, as heart, liver, respiratory, circulatory, cancerous, and hundreds more issues will be severly reduced. My mums a corenary heart sister, she rarely gets people in who havent smoked at some point in their lives.
only dissapointing thing is, i'll be in france while all you pale-faced stinky folk are getting put outside![:D]

Don't be stupid.

If everyone in the country stopped smoking tomorrow for ever, we'd still have a good 40 years of those people breaking. Giving up smoking doesn't undo all its ill-effects.

Hopefully it'll be like the ban here in France, where you would hardly notice there was even a ban...

I don't know what it's like in the UK, however I read in The Economist that Slovakia decided not to ban smokng as the NHS would actually lose money, from tax revenue from tobacco products...

Can't wait. A few places we go to don't allow smoking, but most do. I hate it.

But it will be interesting and perhaps disgusting to see what clubs smell like under the smoke.

There seems to be this general feeling that smokers are hard done by.
Well no-one made you smoke to start with.
I like to ride my bike where I can, I can't ride everywhere though, it's illegal and jeopardizes the safety of others, so I do it where I can.
I'd like to be able to drink everywhere, again I can't, so I'll drink where I'm allowed to.
Because both these things are done out of my choice I'll happily accept the sanctions that are imposed on me doing them. Smokers should do the same, if you choose to smoke you'll have to do it where you're allowed. Smoking is a choice not a necessity.

That's exactly the analogy I was looking for about 12 pages ago...

It's not a good analogy at all. Yes, you can only ride in certain places, and you've accepted that. But if they then came and closed down existing riding spots you would complain and fight it.

Thats how it is with the smoking ban. Smokers accept they can't smoke in cinema's, bus's and countless other places, but they don't want to lose the place they are allowed to enjoy thier luxuries

personally id rather not have the ban because id rather have a fag inside. but im quite willing to put up with it because i have to. no point biaaaaaaatch!ing and moaning that i think its wrong.

on the whole banning smoking/drinking/junk food thing i do feel much more strongly, saying you are going to ban those is no different from saying its a good idea to ban downhill mtb, skydiving, climbing, and hundreds of other 'extreme' sports. they dont serve any purpose apart from pleasure and are very dangerous but you still wanna do them so let people drink and smoke and eat crap as long as it isnt messing things up too much for other people (the smoking ban is a good example).

People smoke outsdide blowing their smoke everywhere anyway. At least there will be somewhere to go to get away from it.

I know, I know. Anyway, some pubs are thinking about 'defying' the ban anyway. Bit stupid seeing as it's their health that's being affected the most by smokers seeing as they work in a smoky environment every day. Guess they're afraid of losing customers 'cos they're all stood outside. [:p]
