  • Last year Redcar apparently paid £76,000 to get a stage.

I can't help thinking that councils are being squeezed to a point where that's not going to be happening.

Stages in Wales are funded by WG, not individual local authorities.

Edit, WG agreed new long term deal with organisers in 2022.

I heard some speculation that the reason the stages are all so flat is to keep the road closures shorter by keeping the race together

They could at least chuck a ramp of some sort in at the end though.

I think people going out to watch the race , start, finish or roadside, for the most part the parcours is irrelevant. They just want the spectacle and most people on the roadside are pretty casual locals who may not be that bothered? Arguably the spectacle of a sprint finish is as impressive at it gets?

ITV4 could make a bit more of an interesting programme I reckon though? Chuck in a couple of segments about local riders, local links of interest etc? It doesnt have to be 45 minutes of a club run.

No live pictures on ITV4 for now as TV plane being refused clearance to reach race by air traffic control. Military aircraft?

At least the neutralised rollout is 8Km, reducing how much "excitement" we might miss on another pancake parcours.

Edit: Ned back after break of depressing adverts with helicopter TV coverage of rollout. \o/

I've just had a thought. Maybe we are being too hard on the organisers... maybe when they planned the stages each route was full of climbs which would have made the routes exciting and challenging, but since then most of those pot holes have been repaired. :D

Hang on, we did this during Glasgow. Potholes are now nids de poule, and Britain's answer to pavé. The TdB organisers should lean into it and number particularly egregious sections.

If nothing else it'll give us something to talk about.

    That's more like it.

I like the tob has gone to some really neglected bits of the UK .... They are part of who we are...some of them bleak tbh . ...tougher riding than it looks ..small roads etc.

56 riders on the same lead time is pretty amusing.

It might not be so bad if JV weren't totally dominant but the routes are just dull and every day has been designed to be pan flat and so a sprint finish.
Surely the route planners could have found some hills between the start and finish towns each day?

Read a small bit about it. Gotta feel for the planners. Seems we're very lucky to have had a race at all, and this was the only way to run it.

Zzz.z...zzzz..zzzzz... Yawn..It was so dull that last night I didn't even bother watching the end of the highlights (were there any?) and the parts I did watch whilst I was playing and beating my daughter at Backgammon.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

  • Talking about bin collection days now.... Wow.
  • I mostly blame the other teams. Why would you do anything to help JV keep/get the race back together? Make them use up some of their leadout to bring back any attacks.

I suppose it's no surprise that Movistar are guilty of bad tactics and just "venga venga venga"-ing it up the road to no great effect.

Everyone caught napping as WVA rides off the front of the leadout to take what will probably be a race winning gap.
