The definitive answer is that it can't be a monument as it's not 200k+

It's not anywhere close to having over one hundred editions either.
When did the Monuments become the Monuments? How many editions did it need?

I don't think the term was used until the late 90s, maybe early 2000s. It's certainly not in my books from the late 80s. The same goes for 'Grand Tour'

I wrote pieces about each of them for a website in the mid-90s, and although it is no longer online, I'm pretty sure they were described as the five monuments. I also know that I definitely didn't coin the phrase, i.e. I picked it up from elsewhere.

Someone should tweet Kelly and ask if they were monuments when he was nearly winning them all.

FWIW Belgians only really started using it in the 90s when the World Cup was a thing, to distinguish from top tier races and other World Cup races.

Milano Torino today - has Carapaz entered based on historical results rather than the actual course?

He's not raced since the Ecuadorian Nationals in January, so I think is probably just getting a race in his legs ahead of Catalunya next week.

Lotte Kopecky with an incredible ride to win Nokere Koerse today just 4 days after the death of her brother Seppe.
Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.

GP Denain today, which is what this thread was essentially created for. Contained this perfect moment.

Not cycling races, but after Numersixvalverde and Pineau de Re winning at the Grand National, Galopin des Champs came up trumps for me at Cheltenham this year. Makes up for the lousy showing of Alaphilippe a couple of years ago.

    Catalunya in here?

Great finishing speed from Evenepoel from a terrible position. Almost gets to Roglic.

Poor Dario Cataldo, multiple fractures of the femur, vertebrae and ribs from the crash in Catalunya today:

Not good to read that. Hope he can recover. I did not like the way the tv directors focused on and replayed that crash esp while the race was reaching the end.

    Cataldo looked utterly floored

  • Adam Yates must have been involved too as he finished 10:35 down

Could have been Yates that caused it. Seemed like a UAE rider overtook an Alpecin(?) rider (possibly Sbaragli) from the right, while the Alpecin rider was looking left and then chopped him and both came down which caused the chain reaction that led to Cataldo etc. crashing.

G Thomas doing his own thing again rather than fighting with his Giro rivals?
Or was he caught up in the carnage? He rolled in a minute down

This is him at the front, I'm pretty sure, as the crash happened behind. He was on the front till 3km to go, so just not getting involved.

I think they said Bernal isn't riding for GC.

Anyway, proper climb today - last 11km average about 8%. See if Roglic can stay with Evenepoel up that.

Bernal dropped a good 8km from the top. Sad to see.

Glad Roglic didn't win that after wheel sucking the entire way. He's got to be the most negative rider in the current peloton.

Surprised Evenepoel didn't try and find out.

Why did Evenepoel go so wide at the final corner?

You do know the primary objective in races is to win? 😉
