The Big 'Let's sell our cars and take buses/ebikes instead' thread (warning: probably very dull)

Yes, I know fun, but making a car do a different noise isn't it for me so much. Unless it's some music coming out of the speakers I suppose.First.Aspect said:
It does actually, yes. There's a valve in the exhaust that opens.kingstongraham said:
Well that sounds suboptimal, so why would you use it? Does it make a nicer brrm brrm noise?First.Aspect said:
Because fuel economy goes from bad to really bad and you would lose an inch in height due to spinal compression.kingstongraham said:
If that makes it better why isn't that just normal mode?First.Aspect said:
Yup. Mine has adaptive suspension. Sport mode unleashes more horses, changes how it changes gear and changes the weighting on the steering.kingstongraham said:Nobody actually "engages sports mode" do they?
I bought it because it was the same price as a slower one. In hindsight the number of times I can exploit the difference is low, and the number of times I can do so legally or safely is lower still.
But while I have it it is fun. You know, fun? For you the equivalent would be putting raisins on your All Bran or something like that I think.
Next car we get will be small and electric, if such a thing exists.0 -
It goes faster in a straight line and round bends in Sport mode.kingstongraham said:

It has Sport plus as well, which makes it easier to face the wrong way or reverse rapidly into a field.
I don't use that mode.1 -
It all feels about as relevant to driving in Britain as those Defender adverts where someone needs to drive through a landslide often enough to have a special setting.0
-
Well I've actually been living in one of the better parts of Britain for that, but sadly that's now so riddled with potholes it's not really possible.kingstongraham said:It all feels about as relevant to driving in Britain as those Defender adverts where someone needs to drive through a landslide often enough to have a special setting.
It's a twisty A or B road car. Not sure it is ideal for the SW, hence will probably not have it much longer.0 -

Strikes me that is likely to be a marketing gimmick, or standard mode is used to achieve high mpg figures and limits power output. Does it do anything?kingstongraham said:
My 1.2l peugeot has a sports mode.pblakeney said:
Why buy that level of car if you're never going to use it?kingstongraham said:Nobody actually "engages sports mode" do they?
Save money and buy a lower spec in that case.
I don't use mine often but it makes a hell of a difference when I do, and is fun.The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

On my car, now gone, I definitely got better consumption using the premium fuel, but I guess that is mostly because it is E5 than due to any of the additives. I measured it at about a 5% improvement which didn't quite offset the difference in cost until the price of fuel went through the roof.rick_chasey said:
I swear I get through much less of it. Genuinely.First.Aspect said:
E5 possibly, but unlikely. The premium stuff that allegedly reduces wear and improves efficiency is snake oil.rick_chasey said:still maintain in my car I get better value for money using the premium unleaded.

And that's because Johnson surrounded himself with toadying incompetents. Whilst I'm not sure that the average calibre of MPs means that the HoC is stuffed full of Britain's brightest and best, I think that even the Conservative cohort wasn't entirely lacking the ability to govern at least legally and competently. (Sorry, this probably belongs in the Tories thread.)0 -

Even in some cars that appear not to justify it, the normal mode has a throttle and engine map that is blunted to get mpg numbers, with the sport mode the only way to drive them really. I don't believe that this has much effect on mpg for anyone with a modicum of finesse with the controls. It just gives the performance you'd expect without having to stamp on the accelerator.Stevo_666 said:

I quite like adjusting the settings on mine, and it's quite handy that you can do it on the fly as the control stalks are on the steering wheel. The only thing it's missing is a quiet setting"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

Economy I find, is no different. You can happily have blunt mode in the 20mph zone but if you want to get out of a junction in heavy traffic quickly, pray.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

I didn't buy an automatic car to do the work myself.0 -
It'll be interesting to see what happens in Manchester. It would also be interesting to see various metrics on how much subsidy goes into buses in various places, e.g. per mile or per journey. I think Stagecoach gets a shedload of money from subsidy in Devon.0
