So I'm young enough to need to be told if that's the real video...

It is. I knew to search from memory of it.

35 years ago. I’ve got parts and tools in my tool box older than that, just in case they might be needed.
Any body used the tools for a square taper BB lately.

Much as square taper BB’s were incredibly annoying, I almost long for the days when you could just buy a bottom bracket and add cranks to it.
All that without needing to download the spec sheet for your bike and work out what parts are compatible.

Yep. For the first time in... 15 years. But not for me.
I used to have the lockring tool - you know, the one with a hinge and due to lack of use, removed the pin and added 15cm of 10 speed chain converting it into a chain whip.
Still have the headset spanners and combo cone spanners + crankset extractor.

never had an issue with it tbh. its square taper with a funny end to suit an Octalink crank.

Problem with Octalink (road version) is that it was around so briefly it became really hard to get parts for it. Otherwise, it was fine.

Octalink is basically the same as a lot of the splined fittings we have now. Only it was not sooooper big diameter and didnt put the bearings in the way of all the shit from the road, so a laser measurement sensor might be able to detect some flex, and it would last too long.

Well I do use the the BB tool with the pins I have fixed a piece of chain attached to a bolt through the pin hole. Home made chain whip.
I do keep my Joy Division CDs ( remember them) in there as well.

Never did have the 'pleasure' of Octalink.
Jumped straight from old school BB to cartridge to overboard cups.
I did have an FAG BB fitted to my Columbus Battaglin because Campag BB's at the time were out of my price range. Although heavy, it lasted years. It was a pig to remove.

Isn't your old Octalink crankset on my son's road bike? Still works a treat, not that it gets ridden much 🙄
