Elisa Balsamo won Stage 1 of the Setmana Ciclista Volta Comunitat Valenciana Femines in a reduced sprint. AvV, Cavalli and Garcia got away on the final climb but mucked about and were brought back. Balsamo wins first race in 🌈

She won a stage of the Women's Tour last year, just after the Worlds.
Ah, yes, so she did. Forgot.
  • Doesn’t look as if Lopez has learnt from his Vuelta debacle.
Got into a boss break with Landa, Yates, Ben O’Connor, but instead of working, decided he wanted to cajole Eddie Dunbar, who was marking, into doing a turn.

Result was that the break was easily neutralised.

With a handy roadblock thrown up by the Ineos Spanish speaking contingent.

They also got 4th with Ben Turner.

  • Don’t know what caused Ethan Hayter to go all Steve Cummings on Ineos.
He’s ridden solo on the rear of the bunch the entire race so far.

Meanwhile, Fabio Jakobson needs to use his shoulder to keep Merlier in his box to take another comfortable victory.

Adam Blyth was saying yesterday that as a result of getting covid he is way behind in his training and is unsure of his form.

Will Sheffield rack up the victories for Ineos this season?

Who's the female commentator on Alpes Maritimes? Thought they were British at first but there's a slight accent at times. The Hatch haters won't like her as she does the correct pronunciation / accent thing.

Quintana on a flyer descending, Wellens chasing hard though (assume it's line although no 'live' logo on the screen).

Jose Bol (the dutch lady who commentated last season)?

Do you mean Jose Been? If so I don't think it's her, I've been watching an hour and she hasn't mentioned her contacts once yet, also the accent is very subtle to the point I keep doubting they aren't British.

Edit - Google suggests it may be her, if so she has improved a lot from last year.

    Yes, I meant Jose Been.
Heard the commentary yesterday and if it is her, then she had improved massively on last season.

What's going on in Algarve? The commentary and rare graphics aren't saying the same thing

12km to go, lead group with all the gc leaders clear and not going to get caught.

Until they got caught with 6km to go, seemingly out of nowhere

  • Yup. But then they all went again.

Higuita takes it from Martinez after martinez shook the race up.

The gcn commentary of Algarve was so focused on him it was like watching one of their solo adventure videos. Cringeworthy, boring, repetitive.

So this is the same move Groenewegen did, only the rider caught in the barriers took his foot off the gas.

I await the 9 month ban with baited breathe.

Maybe one day he'll graduate from dominating s**t small races and actually do something in a World Tour race?

    Yes.
    Clearly exactly the same.

Is 2022 going to be the third successive vintage of sour grapes from Chateau Chasey?

Are they gonna ban the move or not? Or is it only if the other rider puts themselves in danger?

    Stop trolling Rick.
You know the difference between sprinting side by side and a rider coming up from behind.

Maybe there’s a case for a DQF as Philipsen didn’t quite sprint in a straight line but even that’s not a gimme.

  • This is the situation when Groenewegen closed the gap on Jakobsen.

It's only similar in that the gap was closed. You could argue that it should be a DQ for Philipsen for moving off the line, but not that it was as dangerous.
  • At least the Andalucia and the Algarve were good races to watch. Just watched stage 1 of the UAE, flat straight roads and then a sprint finish. Looks like several of the stages will be like that!
Obviously money talks when choosing where World Tour races are set.

Lad had to pull out of the move else he'd have crashed.

Only difference is Jakobsen didn't pull out of the move.

If we only punish the outcome you'll keep getting bad outcomes.

The rider who was blocked would also needed to be DQ as he starts his sprint near the middle of the road and follows Philipson over to the right and nearly takes out the the guy in red, white and blues front wheel.

It is a different level of danger if the gap is closed before or after the rider is alongside.

This is less dangerous because the gap is already gone. Surprised it wasn't a DQ though.

Come on Rick, Groenewegen made the mistake of trying to go through a close-able gap. He knows what's going to happen if he does that.
