WvA not contesting for time bonus ...but should get same time ...
Hayter in the jersey ... Virtue of the time bonus

Cunning plan to take out the opposition, seemed to be a bit of JA shenanigans just before Doull went down. Hayter outsprints Cav for the win as Cav has to ease up realising there was no gap.
  • At least that stage was short and quick. Rather boring, even with Boulting and Blythe desperately bigging up the breakaway's non-existent chances.

Owain Doull plays a blinder, taking out all the sprinters bar Nizzolo, for Hayer to win the stage.

A valiant effort from Cav to close the big gap, only to get a bit squeezed by the other two.
Must have been just about cooked by then in any case.

Yeah maximal effort to get back into hayters wheel ...quite impressive he managed tbh . Cav is looking dam fit

Didn't notice JA in that may need a review by me

From the overhead looked like Cav just didn't have the legs to get off Hayter's wheel, don't think he was blocked. Obviously he had to make that effort before to get across after the crash.

Cav was behind the crash and had to close a big gap on his own, up a wee drag, to get to the front 5

Yeah if had recovered he should have gone round on the right ... But he tested it for a split second and didn't go

Didn't cause anything, he just went quite hard into the corner and seemed to take a very wide line. I initially wondered if that had been an issue but having seen a replay it wasn't.

Hayter was probably the closest of all of them to being taken down as well, superb handling to avoid Doull. Who was the rider that went into the barriers? Looked like another Ineos rider.

I don't see much point in the minor jerseys when no-one is contesting them after the first stage or two.

Cav was very popular at the buses (obviously). He came out and did a big round of signatures and selfies, seemed in good spirits. Was nice to see.

Dowsett was much less mobbed, with Chanel and Juliette outside the bus. I lurked awkwardly for a bit while a few middle aged couples got selfies, debated asking for a selfie myself, but then realised that anyone who would care already knows what Dowsett looks like so there wasn't a lot of point.

I do like seeing the pros up close though - got a good view of most of them as I was stood after the finish line where they were all slowing down. Declerq was warming down outside the QS bus when I got there, he's massive!
  • The most boring race I've seen all year.
TV still focusing on the breakaway far too much simply because it has a few British riders in it and only ever goes back to the peloton with about 5km to go.

Got to be one of the worst TOBs I've ever seen. Makes the Tour of Denmark look like the TDF.

One decent breakaway stage .... Good uphill finish stage and a ding dong battle swapping the jersey ...not terrible half decent crowds... Coverage is sub par and the adverts criminal

Who is going to win ? Less certain than we first thought after day 1 . WvA strongest rider but a man down with a stronger opposition team dedicated to Hayter ?

I'd never realised Hayter was such a good sprinter. I thought he was more a decent climber who could sprint from a small group. I had expected him to beat WVA yesterday but for that to be reversed today. I assume him and Pidcock will be riding the Worlds?

He's more the opposite, a decent sprinter who can hold on to the better climbers.

I think my perception was due to the Tour De L'Avenir, I thought he'd won a mountain stage but it was actually classified as hilly. Plus he won that MTF in Algarve. Looks like he can hold is own in most terrain though.

    Pennines today!
If I've read it correctly, the only stage with 3 cat1 climbs, but then a long descent down Allendale and along the Tyne Valley before the finish at an ugly lump of rusty metal.
Excellent tearooms at Nenthead before Killhope, and Allenheads after the last climb of Burtree Fell.
The race is going to zig-zag round the Market Cross at Alston because the setts (cobbles) are being re-laid on the steep hill.
    I'm spoilt for choice....

Looks like he 'could' become a bit of an MVDP/WVA/JA type of rider, should he want to, and Ineos think that is the right path for him.
He can TT pretty well speed wise iirc - he would have won in that week long stage race he was in, but had quite a nasty crash.

I can't help but feel that yesterday's crash robbed us of a potentially very interesting day.
200kms for Jumbo having to control, over this terrain and only 3 riders to manage moves would undoubtedly led to a variety of tactical probes.

As it is, the job now falls to the mega strong and very experienced Ineos squad and Jumbo having to use their limited resources to get into a break.

Yeah maybe .. otoh in that counterfactual jumbo may have placed a rider in the break to defend ..

This is alright ... Cav in a small break heading to time bonus sprint ... WvA trying to bridge but ineos all over him ... Lots of attacking
