How much before a material improvement - wheels..

They have arrived and I borrowed Shirley’s tools to swap cassettes.
I had a bit of a challenge getting the rear tyre on with a new tyre but eventually got it on.
Ran out of light to adjust the brakes so should be sorted (and pics) tomorrow.0 -
GET THE ACTUAL ON!
Top work..The camera down the willy isn't anything like as bad as it sounds.

The worst part is now it's too dark for photos and he won't take the bike into the kitchen for the shoot0

So first ride - I managed to forget the extra cassette spacer to compensate for running a 10 speeds on an 11 speed hub, so it was a bit rattley and the shifting was out and skipping which put a downer on the whole experience - have since rectified (freebie spacer from a bike shop) so will try again tomorrow.
Overall positive. Spins up about the same, maybe a little sharper (didn’t smash it as the gears kept jumping) but it’s markedly smoother and less harsh over bumps and at speed it is significantly more stable - a lot less skittish.
Decent woosh (though the rattle was loud) and it felt like fractionally less of a sail at high speeds but tbh I suspect that’s entirely in my own mind.
Braking seems fine. Telltale ZZZZZZZzzzz and it is marginally less evenly modulated versus a metal brake track but I can’t see the fuss about braking on carbon rims0 -
excellent stuff, so winner winner chicken dinner.

Why?
If it's wet you just ride to the conditions.
Carbon dry Vs carbon wet is the same as ALU dry Vs ALU wet.
Nothing to worry about unless you're diving into sharp corners too quickly, which shouldn't really happen on a recreational ride0 -

Ah, but its the perpetuation of a myth that people live and love to propogate.
clubbies do the same/variant of:"oh, deep rims - you'll die in a breeze. tubs: oh, you'll die if you puncture. Mudguards: you'll die if you don't have.
clubs: oh, you'll die if you're not in a club"
after a while the myths become truths and swallowed by those who tempt them..The camera down the willy isn't anything like as bad as it sounds.

Ffs I was replying to the implication that the braking was similar to alloy. It just isn't, but you can stop the bike.MattFalle said:Ah, but its the perpetuation of a myth that people live and love to propogate.

Basically it's not a fuss unless you're a fat bastard or a Muppet...so why make a fuss?0

Stop making a fuss then.shirley_basso said:Basically it's not a fuss unless you're a fat censored or a Muppet...so why make a fuss?

Yep he's right, all riding aluminium rims.0 -
You wouldn't get away with that being a muppet on carbon rims.0 -
Better now I have the spacer behind the cassette. Still not as spot on shifting as it was so needs a fiddle but good.
Main difference is the whoosh and it is much less buzzy over rough road and a lot more planted at higher speeds.
I wonder if I am running too low pressure - around 85psi which I think is ideal for 25mm tyres and 55-60kg0 -
so winner all round then? excellent to hear.
re pressures - I'm 87kg but Italian so run everything at 6,754,198PSI so perhaps I'm not the best person to advise.
Why not just pump them up to - grab a figure - 100PSI - and see if you like them at that?
Too hard - let some out. Too soft? put some more in.
i'm sure a clubbie will be along to bore us with some crapdit re tyre pressures in a minute though.

Looking at the lack of front brakes in both bikes, you wouldn't get away with those in the UK either!focuszing723 said:

I'm just under 70kg, and tend to run my 25s at 80-85psi rear, 70-75psi front.
For me that's the right balance between speed and comfort.
But alternatively as mentioned, you could just jack up the pressure and see how it rides.Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

You legally need two independent means to brake each wheel. Regulation 6 & 7 of the Pedal Cycles Regulation 1983.MattFalle said:

nah, fam. the man don't stop us, or, it seems, the gazillions of people on fixies with one or no brakes.
minor laws are there for breaking - its part of life's rich tapestry..The camera down the willy isn't anything like as bad as it sounds.

Rick's bike also doesn't have front and rear reflectors and he's the most law abiding bod I know.
does this make him a law breaking outlaw criminal?.The camera down the willy isn't anything like as bad as it sounds.
