After a month of feeling guilty about spending the money, so therefore not spending it, I've finally bought a pair of wheels.

    https://www.edco-wheels.co.uk/product/all-road-maloja-2/

Will let you know how I get on with them - I suspect it will be additional faff because of my old bike.

Feel free to judge but they seem to get fantastic reviews.

I went for the 25mm width to make sure it fits in with my 2011 Canyon...

An update - these are not expected to arrive for another fortnight.
A minor pain hopefully, do you happen to know if you should be clear of any extra charges at all?
The Spokesman wheels I ordered are due to arrive later this week - curious to see if they turn out to be as good as I hope they might be, although won't get used in anger for a good 5-6 months.

    OK they're arriving today.

Do you need a specific cassette removal tool to swap the cassettes over?

You've never changed a cassette before?

I use one of these, with a chainwhip, though I think decathlon make one that doesn't require the whip, not sure how it works though.

I did 12 years ago and I didn’t need any tools.

You don't need a chain whip to put one on, but you do need a tool for the lock ring. It is the same as for a centrelock disk rotor if you have one of those.

In a pinch, you can fashion an old chain and a bit of wood into a chain whip.

yeah, as above chain whip, cassette removal tool, tourque wrench to 40Nm when doing up cassette.

Some people like to grease the splines on the freehub when putting on the cassette, some don't - I don't think there is a hard and fast rule.

sometimes old cassette can be tricky to get off, so just get an extension bar and tap it from behind.

Allegedly, steel freehub splines require grease, alloy ones recommended no grease I think. Could be wrong but I believe that was the DT Swiss instructions for their hubs?

I've never used a torque wrench. Just do them up really tight.

Very, very few have a torque wrench capable of 40Nm.
Just as tight as you can really. Based on not being a power lifter. 😉

    PS - You've not replaced a cassette in 12 years?! 😱

He keeps his chain clean and doesn't need to generate much power, on account of weighing as much as a wood pidgeon and living somewhere flat?

    Ok thanks.

Once a year I treat myself to a “service” and if the cassette needs replacing I get them to do it there.

But yes I am light on my kit.

    eh?
its far, far easier to get a torque wrench that goes to 40. Its a standard Nm-ontronique.

just go to B&Q and buy one for £15.

anyhow, you may as well do a job properly.

I'll go with that especially as it comes from you and you know far more than most.

i tend to slap a bit of grease on whatever but i'm like that.

Local bike shops don't have a whip or the tool to sell, which was odd.

Offering to switch if for a £5er which is tempting, but I plan to replace the cassette once the prices come down from ludicrous.

Who buys their tools in B & Q ? Overpriced & poor VFM. You’d be lucky to find one there for £15 anyway - https://www.diy.com/departments/magnusson-torque-wrench/1785066_BQ.prd, hardly gets glowing reviews.
Machinemart a better bet for a Clarkes brand one that does 40+Nm
    https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cht141-1-2in-drive-torque-wrench/

For a cassette lock ring ‘very tight’ normally does me fine, no need to go up to ‘stupid tight’, the lock ring clicks 3 or 4 times and that’s sufficient - it’s just a bicycle, not rocket science.

The theory goes that if it is tight enough, it prevents freehub bite. I'm not sold personally, but providing I can actually remove it again it's not going to hurt to try.
