God I wish Christiano had been born in Rhyl not Funchal!

Come on, I don't like him either but that's harsh.
Years since I've been to Rhyl. With good reason.

Thought France looked just outrageously good. Didn’t even have to play that well to be very superior.

England better win their group and do all they can to avoid France

Both of those teams looked a bit better than England.

Pogba was outrageous, last night. I’m writing to Old Trafford, this morning, asking them to play in the blue away kit more often.

    Ridiculously good.

I’ve worked it all using the draw simulator. England France final 😃 Stick Kyle Walker on Mbappe, nobble Pogba, job done.
Just tell him he is playing for Utd

you would still have a problem with Varanne, Kante and Griezman

I've heard people saying England ought to finish second 'to get an easier draw'.

Well, I've had a look and if England top their group, and the other groups go according to FIFA rank (I know, it could all change but bear with me), they go into the half of the draw with Portugal, Spain, maybe Germany as third in F. If they get second place they go into the half of the draw with France, Belgium and Italy.

Plus, potentially all home games bar the quarter final if they top the group.

To me it's a no-brainer - top the group, get a confidence boost, play at home and bring on Portugal (who for most of the match v Hungary weren't that good IMO).

Finland Russia about to start, gotta go!

Agree. Top the group, win as many games as possible and gain momentum.

Martin Keown - ultimate buzzkill on the call.

Phrases I want banned from football commentary.

"Should have done better" (no sh!t sherlock.)

    "look at that"

    "x wants it more"

I'm sure there are more to add.

You forgot any reference to someone giving it more than 100% (this seems to have become an arms race, it used to be 110% but I've heard of players giving it even more now as they must be working harder than those giving a mere 110%).
  • Martin Keown, Ally McCoist - all amateurs compared to the great commentary from Kevin Keegan.

OK after whining about the coverage, Micah Richards, Alex Scott and Mark Champman are good on the studio bit - shame they get the dud matches.

    Get Shearer off he's rubbish.

Can't stand Chapman. He asks stupid questions that only deserve a curt "no".

I think he's ok - at one time he showed a bit too much deference to the pundits but I suppose they are supposed to be the knowledgeable ones.

Don't rate Shearer or Murphy, Savage gets on my tits, Jenas gets a lot of stick on twitter but seems ok to me except for the team he supports, favourite this tournament was Emma Hayes - she did talk a lot but I liked the content and delivery.

My most memorable of recent times was one from Jermaine Jenas as a co-com on an EPL game, his opening words were...'Well, I think both teams will want to win the game'. Oh really!

    Woeful penalty.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

In an echo of Rick observing that the Belgian teams language is English, at the end of the Swiss national anthem, Granit Xhaka gee'd up his team with "come on boys, let's go" .

I guess when a country has more than one national language and there is possibly disagreement about which one to use, it's easier to adopt English rather than pick one side over the other.

Poor goal to concede. Two Swiss midfielders running back (ahead of Locatelli). Both get into the box then stop. Locatelli just jogs past both, into the 6 yard box and has a tap in. Switzerland had about 6 players in the box, marking no-one and none of them pick up the only attacker coming in.

    We're gonna win it.

    29 unbeaten
    81 goals for
    7 against

stats like that would have the engerlish jeffing themselves.

to us - meh. we won Eurovision.

Every tournament has one team that starts like the clappers. They never end up winning it. Sorry Italy, but I predict tears on the pitch in Rome at some stage. When are they due to play Germany?

Too soon to say - they have played a lot of soft teams.

Chucking loads of people forward is all very well against teams who only want to draw but it could be a different story against good opposition.

From what I've seen in round one I think you're mad or overly patriotic if you think that France aren't THE team to beat, by quite some way. (though xg had Germany the winner so...)

I was going to say pretty much the same thing about Italy. They look good as the opposition have let them impose their way of play on them. I suspect when challenged on it they will struggle to come up with anything else and fall apart as a result.
