  • The OP has a point. I always feel more confident I can stop quickly with my hydraulic disc brake bikes. My rim brakes stop well in the dry but not quite as well as the hydraulic disc bikes. Not enough to cause an issue in group rides unless riding carbon wheels with rim brakes in the wet.

Does anyone on here think they can stop as fast on carbon rims with rim brakes in the wet as they can on hydraulic discs?

I think you're the first to mention carbon rims

I can stop as fast on carbon rims/rim brakes in the dry as I can in the dry with hydraullic discs. I have both and switch between the two regularly so pretty confident on this. In the wet it is a different kettle of fish entirely but the example given was in the dry. I actually prefer the stopping with rim brakes on carbon rims vs ally, because they feel less "grabby" and easier to modulate. I can still lock the wheels on either.

Yes but in both cases I have to use a wall to stop me

So the thread topic has changed from "I'm so awesome" to yet another "disc v rim" debate. Not good.

I must admit it was a mega thread until, yes, again, someone decided it needed to be serious.

I am actually considering installing a very stinky, smelly spray that I can trigger from my handlebar if people are on my wheel.

    Sounds like a skunkworks project

I can if I am not looking at my power numbers or in a mirror to see who is drafting me.

If I'm on a bike with either of those it's not mine, so I'm not stopping.

ah - the whole crux of the issue is that he didn't have a mirror to distract him from staring at his HUGE NUMBERS OF POWER

I find that when a molecule of an oil of any kind gets on my disc brake pads, I can't stop as well as I can when dragging my cork-soled shoes on the ground.

Also, when I get a cubic femtometre of air into the disc brake system and the levers pull all the way to the bars, I don't stop as quickly, until I hit the guy in front that I would have caught sooner or later anyway.

    but but but DISCS

The guy at the shop told me that if I wanted PHAT NUMBERS I had to have discs.

Pfft, like that ever happens. Plus, have you ever used disc brakes? No. So you don't know, man, you weren't there, PTSD.

No difference in the dry sorry. You can get the back wheel off the ground stopping on a front rim brake.

Maybe his brakes were set up badly, but discs can be set up badly too.

    That could be a possibility.

However disc brakes bikes are always good. I have some older mountain bikes and they always brake excellent 100%.
I have two older mountain bikes with discs, and they are both lousy at the moment. My two older road bikes with rim brakes could possibly out brake either of them...

    Does this help?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the study that showed the person doing the towing of the "drafter" got an 8% benefit too. So it isn't all bad...maybe that's why you nearly didn't stop in time?

...so he can brake test himself to prove his point?
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.

Ok calm down. In what world is tailgating a stranger and nearly causing an accident because of this acceptable? Forget the disc vs rim nonsense or power numbers, it’s just not something you do unless you know the person or have been given the go ahead somehow.

And to do this on a road with traffic lights?!? Really?

    Not cool at all.
  • MattFalle
    MattFalle Posts: 11,644
    nah fam, you calm down.

who says he was tail gating?

you have taken the word of someone who has told us he doesn't look behind him, doesn't really look in front of himself, just stares at his numbers and thinks he is stronger and better than everyone else.

it sounds like OP was trying to go as fast as he could in a built up area, didn't see the traffic lights and slammed on his brakes nearly taking out some dude who is just pedalling along.

and from his other post, it seems like this isn't the first time he has done this to someone.

    not cool at all.

I'm surprised the OP has admitted that someone could actually keep up with him. I reckon he is starting the Tour of Turkey today to give the pros a chance.
